Combine results overview: Numbers add up to top draft

Results from this year's Indianapolis scouting combine indicate that the 2010 NFL Draft will be, well ... big.

Based on data sent to NFL teams earlier this month, the big boys in the 2010 class -- the offensive and defensive linemen -- were especially impressive and are expected to be a focal point of what may be the best draft of this century.

This corresponds with ratings by NFLDraftScout.com, which lists 19 linemen with first-round potential, including six offensive tackles, five defensive ends and five defensive tackles.

As usual, during and after the combine most attention was given to the glamorous 40-yard run, where LSU sprinter/returner/receiver Trindon Holliday turned in the best time ever at the Indianapolis event with a 4.21-second hand-held clocking, and Clemson wide receiver Jacoby Ford was close behind with a 4.22.

But the combine revealed remarkable information in other areas, such as:

• 64 players -- all offensive or defensive linemen -- weighed at least 300 pounds, led by Alabama nose tackle Terrence Cody's 354 pounds.

• 45 of the 46 offensive linemen who stepped on the scale weighed at least 300 pounds and three of those 300-pounders ran faster than five seconds in the 40, with the best by 314-pound Maryland tackle Bruce Campbell at 4.75, which was better than many linebackers, tight ends and running backs.

• Offensive linemen as a group had their best combine averages this century in the 20-yard run (2.98 seconds), 40 yard run (5.24) and bench press (27 reps).

• Defensive tackles had their best averages this century in 10 yards (1.71), 20 yards (2.86), 40 yards (5.05) and the bench press (30 reps).

• 18 players soared at least 40 inches in the vertical jump, topped by Fresno State cornerback A.J. Jefferson's 44-inch leap.

• Clemson running back C.J. Spiller tied the Indianapolis combine record in the 20 yards of 2.41 seconds, set by East Carolina running back Chris Johnson (now of Tennessee Titans) in 2008.

Despite three 40-yard runs of 4.31 or faster, nobody came close to breaking into the group of 17 athletes on the top 10-yard list, which would take a time of at least 1.43 seconds. The best 10-yard time this year was 1.45 seconds by USC safety Taylor Mays when he was timed at 4.31 in the 40.

Here is a closer look at the best results from this year's combine and a list of the best from this century (2000-2010): Best results documented by NFLDraftScout.com in all Indianapolis combine tests in 2010. To show an athlete's best mark, hand-held times were also considered in this list:

Interesting that they didn't use the official 40 times. The official times have lost a lot of credibility.

I say bunk to this.... This draft has alot of talent but lacks top end prospects.

Consider....

No elite RB
No elite QB
No elite LT
No freakish pass rusher

Hell, even the top ranked WR has considerable question marks.

This draft is strong on Defensive tackles and secondary. Apart from that, pretty weak.

The draft simply lacks the star quality. What it does have is alot of 2nd round type talent which will extend far later into the draft. Which is exactly what we need as we need to imrpove the whole team as a unit.

contrarian point of view:

No elite RB

unless Spiller becomes Chris Johnson as some predict.

Quote:

No elite QB

most scouts think Bradford would have went ahead of Stafford last year.

No elite LT

agree, but many 1st round worthy ones.

though Suh and McCoy both are freakish from the DT spot.

just like Crabtree and Heyward-Bey last year

Some tit for tat

Pretty hard to predict for another Chris Johnson. He was a bit of a surprise coming of the board in the first round if you recall. Calling Spiller another Chris Johnson because he's small and fast is a bit general.

Pre-shoulder injury. Plus last year was a pretty weak QB crop as well if I remember correctly.

Quote:

But there always is because its the only way to obtain a left tackle at an ok price.

Quote:

This is 100 per cent true. I should have clarified edge rushers which teams typically seem to have more of a hard on come draft day.

Quote:

Well, lets be real...Heyward -Bey was a surprise pick in the first. Crabtree had some speed questions but how do you really argue with a guy with the kind of numbers and obvious skills he had? Crabtree was a surefire top 10 guy.

I just don't see alot of "sure things" in this draft. Then again, this whole offseason has been kind of wacky and this draft, in particular, promises to be the most unpredictable that I've ever seen.

Last year was considered a very strong QB class. Scouts love Bradford and Stafford.

DHB was expected go top 20 last year, and the Raiders taking him wasn't exactly a shocker.

Most people think Bryant is a much better prospect on field than Crabtree was.

Strong QBs last year??? Sanchez had huge question marks as a one year starter and Freeman was a surprise at 19th in the first round. If you can find any columnist that said it was, I'd be surprised. Bradford was an elite prospect PRE shoulder injury. personally, I'd bet he comes back just as strong, but there's a question mark this year that wasnt there last year.

DHB was talked about as a top 20..he went 7...that classifies as a surprise in my book. That he went with Crabtree still on the board was crazy. Al Davis crazy.

And tell me, Deep, WHO says Bryant is a better prospect than Crabtree. Show me ONE and I'll be shocked. Show me TWO and I may fall down. You don't compare a guy with two biletnikoff awards to a guy who essentially put together one good season.

Stafford was an elite prospect at QB, and Sanchez was a top 10 pick. That, and there was another 1st round player.

You challenged DHB as a 1st rounder. It wasn't true.

I can't currently find links, but I am working on it. Former Browns' scout Daniel Jeremiah has said that he and and everyone he has talked to in the NFL believe Bryant to be better than Crabtree. Scott Wright has said the same thing. I know my opinion isn't up there with those guys, but I second it as well. All the draft niks I know are firm in their belief that Dez is the best WR prospect since Calvin Johnson.

I actually agree with this and I still think Crabtree will be a HOF

He isn't nearly as concrete here as he has been other times, but this from Scott Wright, "many feel he is just as good of a prospect as Michael Crabtree was coming out of college, if not better."

CJ Spiller was a dominant college rusher. And, it's not like he went to Tulsa or a no-name school. I personally think he could be just like Chris Johnson (as long as he ends up going to a run-dominated team with a great OL like the Titans). More likely, he ends up like a better inside rushing version of Reggie Bush, and that is not bad.

most scouts think Bradford would have went ahead of Stafford last year.

Pre-shoulder injury. Plus last year was a pretty weak QB crop as well if I remember correctly.

True. and it doesn't seem like any are concerned about that shoulder now though. Also, we are talking elite QBs and Stafford was considered as such for a QB. The rest (including Sanchez) I would have considered to have major ? marks coming out last year.

agree, but many 1st round worthy ones.

But there always is because its the only way to obtain a left tackle at an ok price.

Let me clarify then. I think there are 5 rookie starting quality LTs in this draft whereas most years there are less than 3.

though Suh and McCoy both are freakish from the DT spot.

This is 100 per cent true. I should have clarified edge rushers which teams typically seem to have more of a hard on come draft day.

we agree, so moving along.

just like Crabtree and Heyward-Bey last year

Well, lets be real...Heyward -Bey was a surprise pick in the first. Crabtree had some speed questions but how do you really argue with a guy with the kind of numbers and obvious skills he had? Crabtree was a surefire top 10 guy.

crabtree's question marks were not physical. some were speed, but most didn't believe that excuse. his major ? was his attitude. take a look at least year's threads on him at how many were completely opposed to even considering him.

and dez bryant would be a surefire top10 pick too if he didn't have attitude problems and get kicked off his team mid-year. and he still might be.

He isn't nearly as concrete here as he has been other times, but this from Scott Wright, "many feel he is just as good of a prospect as Michael Crabtree was coming out of college, if not better."

Well, I said I'd be shocked and I am. I don;t share the opinion but I guess there is some belief that Bryant is that good. Point taken.
