Best of the rest: Campbell, Griffen headline top remaining players

NEW YORK -- The third day of the NFL Draft is called "Scout's Day" because now that the prime rounds of the draft are in the books, regional scouts will have their voices heard in draft rooms. Most general managers and scouting administrators focus on the top 100 or so players during the season, many times keeping the scouts out of the draft room altogether during the top three rounds unless they want to ask a question about the player in their region.

NFL folks will tell you that rounds 4-7 are the place they "make their money." Though the odds of finding a starter in the second half of the draft -- which includes the first part of the fourth round -- are small, just enough finds can be had to bolster a team's depth or find a diamond in the rough who steps in to contribute early.

The majority of players projected to land in the top 80 were selected there on Thursday and Friday. But some very intriguing players are left to pick through early Saturday. Workout warriors such as offensive tackle Bruce Campbell (Maryland) and DE/OLB Everson Griffen (USC) are still on the board despite their athleticism. Both players have faced questions about their inconsistency.

Productive Oklahoma junior CB Dominique Franks also could not escape mental mistakes evident on film, while Georgia Tech junior RB Jonathan Dwyer was the victim of a poor Combine workout. Many teams had trouble projecting Dwyer after a brilliant college career running out of the triple option.

None of the quarterbacks expected to go in the third round heard their names called; Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan), Tony Pike (Cincinnati) and others now hope to get the phone call relatively early Saturday. But teams aren't lining up to pick this year's group of remaining signal callers. It could be a long afternoon for some players.

These rounds produced immediate contributors last season despite not including the premiere names NFL fans may be familiar with. The fourth round was kind to the Bills (TE Shawn Nelson), Colts (WR Austin Collie), Lions (DT Sammie Lee Hill), Packers (OL T.J. Lang), Raiders (WR Louis Murphy) and Dolphins (WR Brian Hartline) among others.

Fifth-round picks ILB Jasper Brinkley (Minnesota) and FS Victor Harris (Philadelphia) started last year. Sixth-round safeties Al Afalava (Chicago) and Kevin Ellison (San Diego) lined up often for their teams as rookies, while seventh-rounders WR Julian Edelman (New England), OLB Moise Fokou (Philadelphia), OLB Brad Jones (Green Bay) and CB Captain Munnerlyn (Carolina) saw significant action in 2009.

In some cases, those players stepped in for injured veterans and may not get the same opportunity in 2010. But half of them, along with others who have not gotten their chance yet, will have long NFL careers.

Expect some of the players available for Saturday's 157 selections to make similar impacts on their new teams.

For me its a WR and another safety. Im not going to do my homework to say what WRs are left because its another year of waisted time for me and Im done researching for the year. But I hope Toledo Safety Barry Church is available at some point. I think there might be a TE left that wouldnt bother me. Maybe some young DE out there but I dont know who is left.

Im still scratching my head as to why you trade away so many picks, in such a deep draft for a RB, with so many holes to fill. The Browns were 8th in rushing last year and traded for Hillis.

I geuss the disappointment over that will go away, just like 1 good rookie season from Wimbley made the disappointment go away if he can rush for 1200-1400 yards behind Vickers, Mack, and Thomas.

Its good to see the optimistic fans out there that love the picks. Lerner feeds off of that. But were you the same fans that called Kiper an idiot and said "if he knew what he was talking about he would be a scout" when he didnt like when the Browns drafted Thompson, Northcutt, Morgan, and WR Davis? Im not backing Kiper here but every draft, there are fans that seem like every pick. I just dont see it this year just like I didnt see it any other year, and I consider myself an optimist. But because of that, I will wait and see and hope Im wrong.

But for the fans that feel just because Holmgren is the new Prez that the Browns cant do no wrong (Drennen and his pied piper followers. Love the show but it gets old sometimes.) what can the Browns do to continue to have a good draft?

For the fans that feel its an average draft, what if anything could put it over the top?

For the fans that dont like the draft, what if anything can stop the bleeding?

I know that Holmgren liked Jacoby Ford from Clemson as a WR...or look for another "speed" type like Ford...

I would think they'll look for WR and maybe continue with Line Depth

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I would take the best of DL, WR, OL or yes, another DB at this point.

I;m assuming that we are still following the model that Mangini used in NY and working on becoming the best rushing team in the league. I wiould further assume that he wants a solid combination of size and speed backs ... and to have the highest level of talent and ability possible at the position.

I don't know what type of runner Hillis is ... but now we have a speed back in Harrison and a punishing runner in Hardesty. Suppose that we alternate these guys every few plays ... or even series. Suddenly harrison becomes even faster as the defense gets pounded on.

I am a big fan of the power running game and punishing defenses on the ground ..... so I like the pick. I hope we keep 4 RB this year and just beat the crap out of other teams on the ground then scorch them over the top.

I am cautiously optimitic because I feel that we have really good people running the show now. More importantly, they seem to be really good people, who work realy well together. I never really got that feeling from some of our previous regimes.

As far as the rest of the draft goes ..... I wouldn't mind us moving back up into the 4th if there is a player available that we really want. I would expect that any player we take a this piint will have some flaws. A WR wiould probably be a speed guy, who might need work on routes, or with his hands. A S might be a guy who was productive in college, but who lacks elite measurables. We might even look at another NT prospect, as those do seem to be available later in drafts. Guards seem to fall out of the 4-7 rounds of drafts ..... so maybe even another Guard may be in our future.

I just hope that 3 years from now we look back and say that ... well .... say that 2009's draft started the turn-around ... but 2010 really kicked it into overdrive.

With 3 picks left, the following is all the players I would have rather saved the draft picks and drafted these guys. I would have rather waited for all 7 RBs I qouted, to draft rather then trade 3 picks for the guy they did draft. And with the other 3 picks, alot of needs could have been addressed and positions upgraded. I dont see Hardesty as a sure thing in a crapshoot to give up 3 rolls of the dice. Especially with so many needs and the players that are available.

3. Geno Atkins (Georgia) 6-2/293/4.75

4. Arthur Jones (Syracuse) 6-3/301/5.04 (We wont draft this guy because of slow 40 time but if anybody saw him play, they know that he could step in. he beat Notre Dame almost by himself a couple years back. I like him at DE)

Inside linebackers (This needs to be addressed because for you fans that say the Browns are drafting for down the road, this NEEDS to be addressed. Unless you think Veikune will turn it around. D. Jackson will not be here next year. Ill sig bet that to anybody. Bowens is old and wont be here for any playoff run. Fujita is small but good in coverage.

I am cautiously optimitic because I feel that we have really good people running the show now. More importantly, they seem to be really good people, who work realy well together. I never really got that feeling from some of our previous regimes.

You dont remember everyone saying that about Crennel and Savage after their first draft? How did that work out? I think Mangini is putting on a smile because he still has a job.

But with what you said about the RB, thats what Im hoping to happen. But I have a more wait and see aproach because with how much they gave up for him.

It would not surprise me to see us trade for a 4th .... and maybe even trade a player (RFA) if we find a suitable trade partner.

I just hope that 3 years from now we look back and say that ... well .... say that 2009's draft started the turn-around ... but 2010 really kicked it into overdrive.

I really hope your right and Im going to watch every game to see if that happens (assuming Lerner will still buy up the rest of the tickets if they dont sell out, so there isnt a blackout). But I think me and you have a better chance to prominade down McGuffy Street in Youngstown, skipping and singing "I love the Browns" and still have our wallets by the end of the day

Here's one Buckeye homer vote for Kurt Coleman, S, OSU, with one of our remaining picks. Too small according to some (5'10-1/2, 195) ... too slow according to some (4.55 40) ... a ball-hawking, play-making Safety according to most who saw him play.

I can't believe Jonathan Dwyer is still around at pick 140. Also, John Skelton.

My pick this round would be Antonio Brown or Chris McGaha. Both could play in the slot right now.

Any thoughts on Riley Cooper at 166?

Goods hands and decent speed. I think he'd make a decent WCO receiver.

I can't believe Shipley went before Cooper.
