Linebacker Adalius Thomas was released by the Patriots on Monday, according to an NFL source, bringing to an end his disappointing three-year tenure in New England.

The move does not come as a surprise after a tumultuous season for Thomas that included him being a healthy scratch for a game against the Tennessee Titans, and being sent home with three others for showing up late for a December morning meeting in snowy, icy conditions.

Thomas, who had three sacks and made 34 tackles last season and would have earned $4.9 million in 2010, is now free to sign with another team. He told Boston radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub in February that he wasn't sure whether he would be released by said he wanted to play "somewhere where I'm wanted and where I'm going to have fun. That's where I want to be."

He stopped short of saying he felt unwanted in New England, but told the radio show: "I definitely didn't have fun. It was definitely a frustrating year as far as that goes."

Thomas was in the news last month after New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott said on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike" show in March that Thomas would like to play for the Jets if he were released by New England.

"It's funny," Scott said. "I was hanging with Adalius Thomas for Super Bowl weekend. We're buddies from back in the day. He made it public that he's expressed in interest in joining Rex. I think some of his better years of his career have been a part of the Ravens' defense and under Rex Ryan's tutelage. It'll be exciting."

Thomas later told the Boston Herald that conversation never happened and that he had never discussed joining the Jets with Scott.

"I've heard of all the chatter up there about me," Thomas wrote the Herald. "It was about something Bart Scott said on TV, [and] that's not what was said . . . I have never told anyone that I wanted to leave and go play for the Jets."

Been waiting for this.

Pats tried to hold off and trade him during the draft but found no takers. He's just too expensive.

For the right price, I'd LOVE to get him, even though he's not the same guy he was five years ago. We need rush help badly and he's all kinds of versatile.

I just don't see us being in the market for a guy like him though.

I think he ends up in Miami. I would not mind him either, but I don't think we would be an ideal location for him, and that would mean we would have to overpay for him. New Englanders seem very happy to see him gone, which tells me that his play must have dropped considerably. I have not seen the pats play much at all so I could not speak on his play much really.

I'd love to have him!

I just hope he fits our team's standards. I know that he annoyed the pats last year by opening his mouth too much.

I dunno if he's the type of guy that Mangini wants on his team, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rob Ryan is all over him.

Versatile guy, good against the run, decent in coverage, and he adds a bit of a pass rush. He'll allow Cocong time to transition to the 3-4 position as well.

There are some things that went down which aren't talked about via the media.

One of the big reasons he's not viewed as good by the fans is because Bellyache didn't use him as a rusher on most downs. That was how Adalius made his money. So the common fan (you know..........idiots ) looks at the stat sheet and says the guy didn't produce, so he ain't worth the money.

And I agree that Miami looks like the perfect match of need and willingness to pay an aging vet.

He will be 33 when the season starts.

I see him as an upgraded version of David Bowens. And he played for Rob Ryan's brother in Baltimore.

I would like to have him but I think a return to Baltimore or his former defensive coordinator is more likely.

I figured I should just post a few of the other guys who have been released here instead of starting a new thread for all the other guys.

The Jaguars cut John Henderson.

Chris Hovan will be cut soon.

And JaMarcus Russel weighs 300 pounds and will be cut. Bigger bust Leaf or Russell?

Dear god can you imagine the ridiculousness of Adalius going to the Jets? Just add one more piece to the ticking Time Bomb that is that team.

I think Leaf still takes the cake. Russell was a bowl game wonder. Leaf was considered the next coming.

I have some definite interest in Henderson. Although I can't post the video here, he has an awesome pregame ritual.

Yeah, he's the guy who gets slapped in the face before the games. Hard. Almost concussion inducing hard.

I would like to have Henderson too, he's a huge dude (6'7" 335 pounds). But I'm not sure where he fits. He's never played in a 3-4 in his life. In college he played next to Albert Haynesworth.

I don't think Thomas can sign with the jets because the Elite 8 FA rules right? I honestly hope we could sign Thoma but doubt he has little interest to join us.

Thats the one I was refering to, its...intense. I see him fitting in at DE. I would welcome him to the team although I doubt he wants to come play for a rebuilding team.

I think the elite 8 teams are allowed to sign players who were released by their former teams with no restrictions.

Hovan next veteran to get released

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal
April 26, 2010 11:17 AM ET

The veterans that teams couldn't give away during the draft are starting to get released fast.

Bucs defensive tackle Chris Hovan will join Adalius Thomas and John Henderson as veteran defenders to get dumped on Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Hovan re-charged his career under Monte Kiffin in Tampa Bay, but his play fell off last year and he was due $4 million next season. He was recently told to stay away from offseason workouts in Tampa.

PFT has also learned defensive tackle Ryan Sims is safe for now. He won't be cut or traded.

The Bucs drafted defensive tackles Gerald McCoy and Brian Price with their first two picks over the weekend.

Get Adalius Thomas.

He may be older but he fits our scheme EXACTLY considering his body of work in Baltimore.

You rush him and Matt Roth along with Benard developing and that's a nice linebacking core that can get after people.

He is getting up there in years but he also could be good for us for a year or two as he would seemingly fit into the defense we seem to want to run. Our OLB's towards the end of last season really came on and I think that was scheme as much as anything, and considering he is a pass rusher above everything else when he referred to not having fun last season I can assume the lack of rushing he did was what he was talking about. Now that we are running a Ryan attack defense maybe we have some appeal to him even though its not the same Ryan he played for in Baltimore.

That is a lot of assumptions to make but its the offseason

I wanted Thomas when he was available several years ago but he would be joining a VERY crowded LB group. I aint even sure he could start...maybe lag some PT but age and decline might make his a situational guy only.

As for me......lets get John Henderson. IMO I feel he has a couple more years.

Better fit and could start.

Whatever Thomas can brings, is something we already got, so no need to pay twice for something.

Who do we have opposite Matt Roth that's PROVEN.

I love Marcus Benard's potential, but he's not PROVEN yet.

Gocong? Who the hell knows.

Thomas is proven and he can get after the QB. He thrived in Rex Ryan's scheme and considering Rob Ryan's is very similar, he could do the same here.

adalias thomas' most recent tenure in a 3-4 makes him proven in a different way...as ineffective.

while, it is true that perhaps he was used incorrectly and a return to a pass-rush specialist could revive his career, he is far from a "proven" commodity.

Belichick's 3-4 does not = Rob Ryan's 3-4.

nor does Rob Ryan's 3-4 = Rex Ryan's 3-4

we know A. Thomas was good for Rex in Baltimore.
we know A. Thomas was not good for Beli in NE.

we do NOT know if A. Thomas will be good for the Browns if we sign him.
