49ers Grant Michael Lewis His Release 5th October, 2010 - 9:01 am NFL.com - The 49ers have released safety Michael Lewis, two days after the veteran reportedly requested the team do so.

Lewis did not travel with the team to Atlanta this weekend.

"I want to thank Michael for his hard work and leadership as a 49er," coach Mike Singletary said. "We wish him and his family all the best." [READ]

Any interest by the Browns? Could he come in and start ahead of Elam?

if he asked to be released do you think he did so with intentions of playing for the 1-3 Browns?

I would say he either has personal issues going on, or wants to play for a contender before he retires

From what I've read/heard he had personal issues.

He played for Heckert with the Eagles.

Taylor Mays was also already pushing him for a starting spot.

where did you read that? everything I read early in the season was that Taylor had fallen to 3rd on the depth chart and was only being used on STs.

haven't seen much on him the past couple weeks, so i'm curious if he's made strides.

If you watch any highlights for the 49ers from this last weekend you will see Mays make a nice recovery of a blocked punt for a TD. That is only thing I have heard Or seen from him so far.

Yeah he asked to be cut/traded after Mays was promoted to starting lineup. It's on NFL.com.

Lewis might be just as bad in coverage as Elam from what I have read.

Well, nevermind then! I wasn't familiar with him or his play, just curious if he could help our team. After what I have seen/read I think I will pass.

If he can really help, then fine. I just don't want to be a re-tread warehouse if there isn't enough in the tank.
Depth maybe? Not familiar with his degree of game. Must be a chemistry issue, perhaps. . . . .

He was on the teams depth chart as the back up SS....and he played a lot in there last game.....Where I heard it from was a family member in San Jose who is a life long 49er fan.

thanks and apparently Mays did start ahead of him last week, which was the final straw for Lewis I suppose (from the above nfl.com link)
