Seven selected for Hall of Fame
Associated Press
Updated: February 5, 2011, 7:55 PM ET

DALLAS -- Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk led a class of seven voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Joining them were Shannon Sharpe, Richard Dent, Ed Sabol, Les Richter and Chris Hanburger.

Sanders, the outstanding cornerback/kick returner and sometime wide receiver known as "Prime Time" with five teams, is a two-time Super Bowl winner and was the Defensive Player of the Year in 1994.

Faulk won a Super Bowl with the 1999 Rams, was the 1994 Offensive Rookie of the Year, 2000 NFL MVP and a three-time Offensive Player of the Year (1999-2001). Faulk is the 10th leading career rusher with 12,279 yards.

Sharpe starred for Denver and Baltimore for 14 seasons and won three Super Bowls in a four-year span, two with Denver, one with Baltimore. He held league records for a tight end in receptions, yards and touchdowns when he retired in 2001.

Bears defensive end Dent was the MVP of the 1986 Super Bowl and finished with 137½ career sacks. He was the top pass rusher on one of the NFL's greatest defensive units.

Richter played linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams from 1954-62. They traded 11 players for him and waited two years while he was in the military before he suited up. He made the wait worthwhile, going to eight straight Pro Bowls. He also was a center and kicker.

Richter died last June.

Hanburger spent all 14 pro seasons with the Redskins and played in nine Pro Bowls. He played from 1965-78 and was called "The Hangman."

"It's wonderful. I am just overwhelmed. It's such a tremendous honor to be nominated, let alone get in," Hanburger said. "Have to think of all the men who played before me and all the men I played with."

Sabol founded NFL Films.

The finalists who did not get in were Curtis Martin, Dermontti Dawson, Cortez Kennedy, Andre Reid and Willie Roaf.

Induction ceremonies are Aug. 6 in Canton, Ohio.

Primetime and Sharpe... can't wait to hear the talk coming from Canton out of those two.

Well, let's see .... I had Sanders, Faulk, Sharpe, and Dent as finalists ...... but only Sanders as an inductee in my list.

I also had Tags over Sabol (and as an inductee this year) ..... so obviously that was wrong too.

Let's get a guy like Gary Collins in as a veteran. His stats are every bit as good as if not better than a guy like Lynn Swann. Plus he was also a great punter while in the NFL.

I thought I had a pretty good grip on most every well-known, "name" player that has been in the League since 1950, but I'll have to admit I'd never heard the name Les Richter.

Gary Collins,...I don't think he's even on the "Veteran" viable-candidate list,...

Pretty good HOF class IMO. I never liked Sanders (big mouth, big WUSS), but what he lacked in toughness he more than made up with his athletic ability. He was the only guy I had as a sure-fire 1st ballot honoree out of the group of finalists this year.

I though Faulk would get in, but I wasn't 100% sure it would be this year. I loved to watch him play. He could truly do it all.

Overall, not bad...

From appearances, it looks like once again the Senior Committee proved themselves a bunch of major dipwads just like they did when they overlooked Gene Hickerson for so many years until dementia had such a hold on him that he had no idea of what was going on or the honor bestowed upon him.

Shame on them. I realize the committee has no idea of the life span of any individual, but certainly if a senior is deserving enough, for crying out loud quit fooling around. get it done!

Cris Carter got jobbed again, even more surprised to see that he wasn't a finalist.

He'll get in eventually.

Tim Brown, Andre Reed, and Cris Carter are all blocking each other from getting in.

I don't get the Hall of Fame any more. I used to think it was a place for the top two players at your position each decade . Chris hanburger was a very good Lber. i saw him play, yet was he better than clay mathews? making the pro Bowl is NOT making All pro and I wondere how amny times les Richter of hanburger ever made All pro.
All pro means you are voted THE BEST. Dave Robinson, lber for GB was better and Not in the hall.

Don't rattle off probowl appearances as it becomes a beauty contest and many are voted in on PAST accomplishments. There are many in the hall I do NOT agree with and add chris Hanburger to the list.
