G'morning folks. I'm currently having a discussion with a young lady about some things and she pointed me to a website as her "proof". I'm trying to determine the sources of the information and I know some folks on here have shown that websites can lean one way or another by their sources of funding and such.

How does one find this other than doing a simple whois search. I check the about section and it doesn't reveal anything other than a simple BS statement. There has to be another source I'm not seeing.

Thanks.

A lot of it is just knowing the names, affiliations, and history of the site and it's writers/contributors.

since CNN, FOX, MSNBC and other MSM sites no longer seem to care where the information comes from it makes things pretty difficult.

Taking one look at that site, I'd feel comfortable saying it's not legit.

Me too. It is a giant pile of conspiracy theory wrapped in a lot of crap. The fact that she can't see that is funny to me. But I'm enjoying the ability to torment her and watching her make a point that is laughable.

I've already won the arguments, now I'm working on showing her the invalidity of the sources she uses.

I would agree that this site and it's tone looks a bit sketchy.

However, there are also some troubling items. The dash-cam video of an officer arresting a concealed-carry holder is particularly disturbing. I disagree with some of the editorial content, but this is an example of police conduct that should never be tolerated.

I realize that many people have never had any interactions with police along such lines. There is a question about much of the conduct about the individual being arrested. However, there is no direct evidence of any crime happening. The officer threatens the woman with physical violence. He makes threats to shoot the arrested individual. i speak from personal experience that this type of conduct from a police officer is not uncommon.

Whether or not the man was picking up a hooker, or looking for work, is open to question. An educated guess that someone might be a criminal is not sufficient reason to treat them like one. Threats of a beating, or a clear statement that the officer should have emptied a full clip into the man ( "ten shots and watch you drop") are not acceptable conduct. The cop is still on the payroll and may get his job back.

Watch that video and tell me you want this man carrying a gun and a badge.

I think he was refering mainly to news sites. I know if I'm looking for news I don't goto www.abc.com, unless I'm wondering who's winning whatever dancing or sincing show they are known for..

It doesn't look like a whois of a legit site but some personal site. I don't think many legit orgs are going through GoDaddy.

I wouldn't say that. Godaddy is a reliable domain name registrar/broker.

The site is using domains by proxy to conceal ownership. That sets off a red flag for me, because a legit organization would WANT it's contact info out their for donors and such.

But that's why they have a site. As far as the domain Proxy thing is, goDaddy's wording for the option is very confusing to someone who understands Domains, it could be complete jibberish to someone who doesn't.

The average person isn't doing a whois to find out about a site, that's mostly the spammers. I get about 2-3 phish emails a weeks telling me that our work site and my dawgtalkerpickems site are up for renewal, both are registered for several more years. It is interesting that it increases the during the month of it's renewal even though the year is many years out.

What I usually do is Google search any of the authors they post. If you see a trend that will tell you quite a bit. It also helps to double check stories with news sites to see if they are true.

They have an author that they are using named Robert Higgs. His wikipedia page describes him as libertarian anarchist.
Another is Andy Worthington, an investigative journalist from Britain, writes for Alternet and HuffPo.

They are also using Ron Paul it seems.

That gives you the slant for sure to tell you where they come from.

For me, any legit site that I would refer to should have a Masthead. Just like a newspaper/magazine with a who's who. Who is in charge etc etch
