Just final out this morning. Got my DD 214.

8 years, 7 months, 7 days.

Man...... It's be real. Too real. No more birthdays, thanksgiving and Christmas being missed. No more field, no more pt formation, end of the day formation, wearing the same thing very damn day. No more deployments.

I can grow a beard, I'm going to school, can wear whatever the hell I want.

But....man I'mma miss it.

Congrats!!

and, yes you will

It's funny, as time goes on, the memories of all the petty things I hated about the military fade more than the memories of all the good times and the camaraderie. Life-long friends from those days like no others.

Thanks for your service and congrats on no longer being government property!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Man, that is some good news! Congratulations!

IMHO, we owe you so much more than mere thanks. I hope your future as a civilian brings everything you want in life. Our servicemen/women have earned the very best this country can provide.

Thanks for your service. It's a shame you didn't make it to 20. Then again, the ways things are going in this country, there probably won't be a military retirement package in 12 years.

Let's see....

No more field -- it's now called "camping". You will do it voluntarily, even look forward to it.
No more pt formation -- Gym membership, or get fat as you age
End of the day formation -- Now known as "Rush Hour"
Wearing the same thing very damn day -- Suits, ties, slacks, McD's hats, whatever.... all just uniforms

No more deployments -- yes, you now have to pay your own way to exotic locales, but you are NOT allowed to shoot the indigenous folk any longer.

I can grow a beard -- DING DING! You found the one difference Of course, you could have gone SPECWAR and done this, too, hehe!
I'm going to school -- same as the service... on your time
Can wear whatever the hell I want -- same as the service... on your time

I will say this much.

My good buddy is a Marine stationed out here in San Diego. He has waaaaaay more flexibility (day-to-day schedule-wise) than I do (I'm an engineer for a med-device company).

He's usually in the office earlier than I am, but is out much much earlier than I, and he tends to have more "late start" and "early finish" days than I do.

He's also been deployed 5 times, so that's pretty much the great equalizer against all my complaining.

If you take straight up hours though, we work more, for sort of way less.

Traditionally, in the army we don't have too many end of the day formations. Normally the platoon sergeant will just release the platoon when work is done. Probably round 1400.

The problem? We are already up between 04-0500 because pt is at 0600.

So let's say best case scenario, well, technically we still have 8 hour days. Now, pt is from 6-7. Work is from 09 to whatever.

But since I'm a squad leader, we don't get off with the junior enlisted. I'm still at work typically til around 1700.

Now, I'm not really complaining about it, cause we do have a crap ton of days off.

But once you throw a wrench in the machine like a 12-15 month deployment, the hours and flexibility go out the windo very quickly.

... I also forgot about when he has duty and is basically at work for 1.5 days straight.

I just joined the Guard, because by the time my beard gets long and unmanageable, it's time to shave it for drill weekend anyways...

The irony is, if I could go back and redo it, I would of went active duty no doubt...

Congrats on your freedom. Just don't get any really dumb military tattoos.. they are the worst..

Six months until my VA claim gets approved... And that's the optimistic time frame.

Jesus.... I already hated the VA, but now I wanna burn them to the damn ground.
