With the recent news from Toledo (drinking water) I'm reminded of one of the strangest posters to grace Browns boards. I think his name was De_vo.

Anybody remember this cat? Was that his name? - De_vo

I believe brownsbabe met up with him and reported that he was fairly normal (a nice guy with lots of tats(Tattoos))

I'm sure a lot of us old timers remember him. I know I do. Just another blast from the past.

The last I heard, he was posting on the Browns 24X7 site. I haven't seen a post of his in years.

Might his name have been Deso?

No, those are two separate entities. I use the word entity because you never know quite how real a person who posts is until you meet them.

They all changed their names, started wearing bow ties, and became Ned Flanders clones.

LOL, I was just about to mention the Darkside. Wow that place was a trainwreck that you couldn't take your eyes away from. Basically a place for the degenerates who had been booted from every other message board.

There was a running conversation about Shep, because 95% of them had been banned from some board or another by him. Shep and I became friends later on, but that guy took being a ref WAY too seriously.

I liked the board better back when Shep was still a Ref.

My only issue with Shep is he would take his power as a ref, and use it in his personal board battles .

I was also a Shep Board fatality. Or was it Diamdawg?

I made merciless fun of Diamdawg when he and some buddies were at the Cleveland Indians greatest comeback win in franchise history on Aug. 5, 2001.

The Indians were losing 14 - 2 going into the 7th inning to the Seattle Mariners (who had the best record in baseball at the time). The Tribe scored 3 runs in the 7th, 4 in the 8th and 5 in the 9th (with two outs) and won the game in the 11th.

But Diam and buddies left early and missed the comeback!!

We were in town for Browns training camp (Southern New England Browns Backers) that day.

My understanding of that whole time period was:

A Browns Media employee was originally in charge of monitoring the Board but the Board started getting too big.

There became the need for closer Board scrutiny due to potential legal exposure.

Some posts became very profane and slanderous and there were "raids" by other team fans (for instance, Squeelers).

I think Shep and Diam somehow got the job.

This is my educated guess of how the Board refs got started. Am I close?

Shep volunteered, and became the lead Ref among those not employed by the Browns. I think that Diam was the 1st Ref Shep brought on. Those 2 are well known, but I;m not going to "out" anyone else who might not want to be known.

Many others were brought in along the way, including myself, until a disagreement over disallowing certain types f threads, such as political threads, caused me to quit. Shep (and others) thought it would be a great idea to ban political threads. I disagreed. (and I was the Ref who mainly watched over those threads anyway) They changed the policy back soon after that ..... but I wanted no part of being a Ref from that point on. It was much nicer being able to just read the boards, and ignore gaming threads, and all of the others that do not interest me at all.

Anyway ...... I seem to recall that Shep eventually left his position as a Ref after the Browns went back on all kinds of stuff they were going to do with the old board. These things go from the rename the board contest that went nowhere at all ..... and up from there. (I can't remember them all) The Browns seemed to lose interest in the boards over time ..... until eventually Shep quit. Then the Browns seemed to lose interest even quicker, and eventually they shut them down entirely. (after an upgrade that never was ........ and other issues)

Early on, the boards were important to the Browns. Within the past couple of years, though, that all changed, and they became an expense that didn't want ...... even the relatively minor expense of licensing, and administration of the boards. (which on the Browns side was one person, rarely interacting with the Refs at all, from what I have heard)

Very interesting YTown. Thanks.

I'm going to have to try to remember that many of the posters today are just kids who have a very different point of view (and sense of humor) than we did in 2000.

Shep brought me on to be a ref too. I had a completely different idea of what was offensive than he did, and I got 'fired' after about 6 months. I think the most I ever did was banning a spammer, but I'm a free speech kind of person. He got what he paid for.

I generally tried to stay consistent with the rules as they had been enforced back then. I made my mistakes ..... but I did my best, and put a lot of time into the boards.

I actually think that it might have been you I took over for. Were you a "4"?

I don't recall, but most likely. I worked nights, but I only had to work when I had calls incoming, so I was usually hanging out on the board. I followed the rules, I just had a different idea of offense. I will admit I was rather loose with some of the interpretation.

You took over for me after I was fired for not having enough time to dedicate to reffing. Not even a "hey, something going on, we need more time from you. Can you give more? No? Ok, well the. We'll have to find someone else who can"

Meh, no hard feelings...I got suckered back into after Shep left to "official" board. He got the last laugh there. LOL!

For some reason I was thinking that i was 2 after you. Guess not though. They say that the memory is the 2nd thing to go. Or is it th 3rd? Maybe 4th ..... I can't remember.

I really don't know a whole lot about what happened there with Shep, other then he was sick and tired of not getting answers to his questions. They were supposed to handle certain things, and then never did.

I hated that whole "chat" setup from the start, and when the Browns couldn't even pull off the official naming contest, I knew it was in trouble. They had that rename the board contest thread for months .... then they pulled the thread, and said that they would have a decision soon ..... then the whole darn thing just vanished from memory.

I hated the new board setup. I have no idea how anyone could Ref hat board without new post jumpers. That would be a nightmare.

When the old Dawgtalkers went to Browns chat, we cut and paste some threads that exist currently in the archives section of this board. I think they might have been lost but much like when the Franchise moved, we got to save some of our history

There's a tribute to Ravenkiller in there as well as a "Tribute to the original Dawgtalkers" that was initially started by Tenndawg. I joined the old boards some time after and don't post much these days though I lurk on a daily basis. In that thread you will find some memory jogs of old users that will help you on your way.

It's funny ..... a while back I went to the Internet Wayback Machine and found some of the old pages from the original site. Unfortunately, all that are there are the forums and the thread titles from what I saw at the time.
