My question to the coaching staff is, have you ever heard of the concept of spying a running QB?
In yesterdays game, it was obvious that Newton had no problem in running the ball anytime he wanted too. You might say the defense knew he could be limited due to his accident, but early in he started to run.
I guess my point is, if he's willing, put a spy on him to limit him from gashing us for first downs & TD's.
This hasn't been the first time this concept has gone unnoticed with our staff. Indy had Luck (runner ), Jacksonville had Bortles (runner) & Tennessee had Locker ( runner). All resulting in stressing the defense at key times & contributing to wins. The only exception was Tenn. & we would of lost that game if Locker didn't get hurt.
You don't have to spy every play but, when we are playing run happy QB's, we need to have a plan.
Did Jim O' Neil not get the memo that Newton can scramble?
Kept our defense on the field a lot more than they needed to be refusing to leave a spy on Newton.
It's also frustrating how NOBODY HAS EVER DEFENDED A READ OPTION PLAY BEFORE. Sheard, Kruger, Mingo, not a damn one of them know how to stay at home and play contain...
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
yeah the thought did cross my mind. I'm proud of myself. Of late I would go to church get forgiven and then within 2 hours I'm cussing away with 4 letter words as if I was in a frat house in college. Yesterday the worst thing I said in a very loud voice...That was STUPID! which did get voiced at least once on a CAM run with all covered well. After that I would just say something in disgust...like AGAIN!!!
very frustrating. Defense I thought played again well enough to win. The Panthers D was not that good where we could muster just 13!
jmho
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
I do seem to recall Mingo spying him on one play, but I wasn't sure if he was actually spying or he was running a delayed blitz. He didn't really try to get into the backfield, he just seemed to hover around the LOS.
But, I remember remarking to my wife that he was going to kill us if we didn't put a spy on him. We lost containment on him far too many times for a spy to be that effective, though.

I think you meant Newton ..... but just in case ....
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I thought for the endzone attempts would have someone spying on Cam. I can't recall really a single QB spy assignment from any of our linebackers. Which is ironic cause Jim and Mike both said they're expecting and preparing for Cam as the starter.
The Netwon TD was a single bad step from Mingo which even with Mingo's speed, didn't allow him to recover and get into any position to tackle. Even at that, I think Mingo was on a blitz assignment.
I didn't see who it was, but on a couple of boot by Newton, and also on that long run at the end of the game, IIRC, the left side OLB was completely sealed from the play. I mean just taken out like he wasn't even on the field.
That happened far too often.

Both Sheard and Mingo took steps into the pile on runs that let Cam get around them and both had the announcers calling Olsen a great blocker because he sealed off our outside defenders. He didn't seal the OLB, they stepped themselves out of the play, he sealed the secondary players trying to come in and help. Newton doesn't get nearly the yardage if Olsen got tied up with our OLB's.
This scheme needs questioned and fixed IMO. No edge, no contain. And the flat is abandoned for passes apparently. I would want to see us challenge the first down marker more in the secondary. We seem oblivious to the sticks.

Our outside containment has been horrendous all season .. I'm not a great X and O guy, but something is wrong there
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
