Auburn

A backup running back stole the show at Auburn's pro day on Tuesday, which featured 21 players performing workouts and drills in front of scouts from all 32 teams. Corey Grant put up eye-popping times in the 40-yard dash, with various reports clocking him from as low as 4.19 to as high as 4.34 on his two runs. Grant said the NFL guys told him he ran a 4.26, while NFL.com draft expert Mike Mayock had him at 4.25 and 4.27. Regardless, his time would have been the fastest at the combine for a running back (Michigan State's Jeremy Langford ran a 4.42).

The other notable players at the pro day for Auburn were Nick Marshall and Sammie Coates. Marshall had a busy day performing on both the offense and defense. He threw passes to teammates during quarterback drills, and also put in some defensive back work. According to Gil Brandt, he "had some nice throws" and looked "very athletic" on defense. Coates caught the ball during his workout, solidifying his status as a potential deep threat for any team that drafts him.

Northern Ill

Senior wide receiver Da'Ron Brown (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park HS), who has attracted the most attention among NIU's 2014 seniors this offseason, eschewed the running and lifting portion of the work out after participating in the NFL Combine last month, but did run routes and catch passes. Brown also represented NIU in the 2015 East-West Shrine Game in January after finishing his Huskie career ranked in the school's top five all-time in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches.

Running backs Cameron Stingily (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville HS) and Akeem Daniels (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola HS), tight ends Luke Eakes (St. Marys, Kans./St. Marys HS) and Tim Semisch (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS), offensive lineman Tyler Loos (Sterling, Ill./Sterling HS) and defensive tackle Donovan Gordon (Kansas City, Mo./Raytown South HS) all participated in each of the physical tests, while former NIU linebacker Victor Jacques returned in hopes of catching the eye of a professional team.

Stingily put up an impressive 25 reps on the 225-pound bench press, while Gordon put the bar up 22 times and Eakes 21. Daniels, who did not lift, showed his athletic ability with a vertical jump of 37 inches and also posted the fastest 40 time with a 4.53 mark. Stingily had a vertical of 35 inches and ran a 4.82 40, impressive for the 6-0.5, 240-pound running back who some experts have said projects as a fullback at the next level. Eakes, who had a strong overall day, posted a 33-inch vertical leap and ran a 4.78 40 while also leading the way in the three-cone drill with a 6.90 time.

Scouts from 15 NFL teams - among them the Raiders, Browns, Bears, Vikings, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Ravens, Steelers, Patriots, Jaguars, Broncos - were in attendance at the workout, as were the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Ohio State pro day

Many in the NFL converged to the Ohio State campus Friday, including ClevelandBrowns.com. Here’s what we saw and heard.

1) There were some heavy hitters who showed up to Columbus. Head coaches Mike Tomlin and Marvin Lewis represented the Steelers and Bengals, respectively; Lions general manager Martin Mayhew was making the rounds and the Browns sent a significant portion of the offensive staff, including coordinator John DeFilippo, wide receivers coach Joker Phillips, tight ends coach Brian Angelichio and offensive assistant Mike McCarthy.

2) The actual scouting of Ohio State prospects wasn’t the only reason the Buckeyes’ pro day was so well attended. Quarterback Cardale Jones and running back Ezekiel Elliot were milling around the Buckeyes’ practice facility chatting it up with several NFL people. Scouts and coaches wanted to get a feel for the personalities of the two superstars’ personalities, who led Ohio State to a championship. At this point, both could end up as first round picks in 2016.

3) Ohio State wide receiver Devin Smith was the most popular of the 14 players who worked out in Columbus, but he opted not to run the 40-yard dash. Smith wisely stood by the blazing 4.42-second time he ran at the NFL Combine last month in Indianapolis, which enabled him to climb up many draft boards across the league.

4) Smith still did, however, decide to participate in passing drills. During his junior season, Smith only caught 33 passes, but 12 of them went for touchdowns. There’s good and bad that come with his statistics. Clearly, Smith can hit home runs and stretch the defense. But now, he has to prove that he’s not just a deep threat.

5) “[I’m trying] to hush the critics of me being able to only run one route,” Smith said. “I thought it was very important to come out here and run all the routes, and show them I’ve improved.”

6) Throwing the football in those passing drills? The 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, Troy Smith. And the 30-year-old was getting into the workout, too. By the time the 30-minute session ended, Smith was dripping in sweat. Smith last appeared in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 and was mostly recently with the Montreal Alouettes in 2013.

7) Defensive back Doran Grant turned some heads during his workout. What scouts told us they like about the 5-foot-11, 200 pounder are his skills as a nickel cornerback and he’s flexible enough to even earn a test run at safety in the NFL. The Akron native displayed the footwork to track receivers up and down the field. Most mock drafts project Grant to be selected in the third round.

8) Pro days don’t accentuate every player, though. Take tight end Jeff Heuerman for example. The 6-foot-5, 254 pounder’s strengths are making tough catches in traffic and his ability to shed tacklers after the catch – both of which you can’t prove with in shorts and a t-shirt. By no means did Heuerman have a poor showing, but it’s just tough to gauge how legitimate of a force he could be in the NFL. Mock drafts peg him in the fourth or fifth round.

9) Defensive lineman Michael Bennett was seen limping after his 40-yard dash attempt, as he appeared to grab his hamstring area. Bennett and his 6-foot-2, 293-pound frame are one of many defensive linemen who have been linked to the Browns in mock drafts. We overheard some chatter from scouts at the Pro Day who said the injury shouldn’t sway his draft stock, which is right now in the early second round.

Marcus Mariota was the big name on the day for Oregon, along with defensive lineman Arik Armstead and offensive lineman Jake Fisher. We talked at length about those guys in our recap of Oregon's pro day but to sum up: Mariota mostly looked fine but did not impress scouts, while Armstead and Fisher sat on their measurement numbers but looked good in drills.

There was also a big-name receiver on the day: Devin Funchess of Michigan. Funchess absolutely demolished his combine 40-yard dash time of 4.70 seconds. He managed to run a 4.48 at his pro day

The biggest star of Tuesday's slate of pro days was UCLA's Brett Hundley. The quarterback looked "smooth" according to CBS Sports and could be solidifying his place as the top signal caller after Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Fellow Bruin Owamagbe Odighizuwa also performed well, and could come off the board in the 25-40 range per NFL.com.

Nebraska had a pair of big names in running back Ameer Abdullah and linebacker Randy Gregory. Abdullah opted go through drills and run the 40-yard dash, which is a big deal given he ran in the 4.6 range at the NFL Combine. There's video of his attempt here, via Bryan Fischer, and while there's not an official number, Abdullah improved on his time and ran in the 4.4s, per Fischer. Gregory stood on his Combine numbers and mostly ran drills. Fischer has video of him running the shuttle and a bag drill.

The biggest name on the day: defensive lineman/outside linebacker Vic Beasley of Clemson. All 32 teams were at Clemson for their pro day, though there were other players to watch like Stephone Anthony. But Beasley was the main event, despite many believing he'll go in the top five picks and few expect he'll escape the top 10. Beasley didn't run or lift on Thursday, but he went through "extended drill sessions" at both linebacker and defensive line spots, putting on a "stellar show," according to the Daily Herald.

Friday Recap

West Virginia: Scouts line up to see White

Big draw: WR Kevin White

Don't forget: OL Quinton Spain

Notable attendees: All 32 teams sent at least one representative to the workout, NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt reported.

The skinny: It was no surprise to see a ton of interest in the Mountaineers with White, a potential top-five pick, in action. He looked smooth during pass-catching drills (he stood on his NFL Scouting Combine test results), despite one drop.

However, fellow wide receiver Mario Alford stole the show though with a 4.27 in the 40-yard dash.

DE Shaquille Riddick posted a vertical jump of 36 inches. Spain appeared to move well during drills.

Oregon State: Mannion states his case

Big draw: QB Sean Mannion

Don't forget: CB Steven Nelson

Notable attendees: Titans GM Ruston Webster, New York Jets GM Mike Maccagnan, Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider, Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht, reps from all 32 teams.

The skinny: In contrast to Marcus Mariota's pro-day showing Thursday, Mannion impressed observers with a throwing session that allowed him to show off his ability to make all the throws. Though he didn't complete every pass, the signal-caller was only off on a handful of throws and spun the ball well.

On the flip side, Nelson looked fluid during defensive back drills and ran the 40 in 4.49 and 4.54 seconds before standing on the rest of his combine numbers.

DE Dylan Wynn reportedly put up a very impressive 43 reps on the bench press and was worked out at fullback as well.

Ohio State: Heuerman helps himself

Big draw: WR Devin Smith

Don't forget: DT Michael Bennett

Notable attendees: Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert, Vikings GM Rick Spielman, Lions GM Martin Mayhew and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis were among those in attendance. All 32 teams sent at least one representative to the event.

The skinny: As expected, Smith took part in the three-cone drill (6.83 seconds), but stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine.

Tight end Jeff Heuerman, who is known mostly for his blocking, showed off his pass-catching ability Friday.

Bennett strained his right hamstring at the end of his second 40-yard dash, so he sat out the 20-yard shuttle and three-cone drill.

Most notably, the quarterback used for throwing drills was none other than 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith. See NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt's full report on the results of the Ohio State pro day.

Hobart: Marpet looks to continue ascent

Big draw: OL Ali Marpet

Notable attendees: The Bills, Eagles, Falcons and Patriots were among the 10 teams to attend the pro day.

The skinny: Marpet might be from Division III, but he continues to impress. He built on his strong Senior Bowl and combine showings by running through a number of offensive line drills designed to showcase his versatility. Marpet is one of the biggest risers in this year's draft, and he lived up to his new billing Friday.

Georgia Tech: Mason gets long look at center

Big draw: OL Shaq Mason

Don't forget: WR Darren Waller

Notable attendees: All 32 teams sent at least one scout to the pro day and former Yellow Jackets star Demaryius Thomas was also on hand.

The skinny: Mason drew plenty of interest on Friday and went through all of the testing phases after being a surprise snub from the combine. He put up 25 reps on the bench press, according to the school, and was put through the paces with an in-depth workout at center, a position he's never played in a game, in addition to the normal offensive line drills.

Waller reportedly opted to stand on his numbers from the combine and but did take part in pass-catching drills, looking quick in and out of cuts while snagging everything thrown his way.

Fellow wideout DeAndre Smelter attended the pro day to meet with teams but didn't test or workout as he continues to recover from an ACL tear.

Man I hope that we take a hard look at Mannion.

I just have a feeling about him.

Gil Brandt on the Georgia Tech pro day

Brandt: Georgia Tech's Darren Waller could be 2015 draft steal

Gil Brandt
NFL Media senior analyst

There were 31 NFL teams in attendance for Georgia Tech's pro day Friday, including several wide receiver coaches. Seven players worked out indoors on Field Turf, including two players who were at the combine.

Most of the reps on hand were there to see Darren Waller. A wide receiver, Waller is a very interesting prospect not only because of his size (6-foot-6, 241 pounds), but because he runs so well. He was much faster than anyone thought he would be at the combine, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds. He stood on all of his combine numbers, but he had a very good workout Friday, showing off very soft hands and catching the ball very well. This is a prospect you'll want to keep an eye on. Some NFL team just might get itself a steal.

DeAndre Smelter, who also was at the combine, has not been able to work out because of a torn ACL he suffered in November, but he measured in at 6-foot-2, 227 pounds. He has 11 1/8-inch hands and 33-inch arms. No date has been set yet for his workout.

One other player of note was Shaq Mason, who was not at the combine. Mason (6-foot-1 3/4, 304 pounds) ran the 40 in 4.97 and 5.00. He had a 32-inch vertical and a 9-foot-2 broad jump. He hda a 4.65 short shuttle and a 7.53 3-cone drill, and posted 25 bench-press reps. Mason was worked out as a center by former New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, and he looked solid. He's probably a late-round draft pick or a priority free agent.

A few articles have named the individual personnel, but most have just either named specific the teams or just a general "12 teams were at the camp".
