Time is coming to plan the annual Christmas vacation and the wife is tired of St.Croix ( why baffles me as it is heaven ) so I'm on the lookout for some new ideas. We are not an all inclusive stay on the resort couple nor do we like getting blasted with cruise ship passengers trying to cram a weeks worth of fun into 6 hours on shore . We enjoy renting private homes/ apartments and exploring on our own . st. Lucia , St. Thomas / Croix / Johns are great but we've been there and are looking for something different .

Hawaii?
Guam?
Philippines?
Thailand?

Does it have to be an island?

IRE 45:

About 25 years ago (BK), my wife and I and another couple went to Nantucket Island for a Christmas vacation.

That was pretty cool.

Nantucket is off the coast of Massachusetts and is the least developed and smallest of the three nearby islands (along with Martha's Vineyard and Block Island)

It has a very quaint, small town and main street that is tastefully decorated to the hilt at Christmas time. And every year they have an event called "The Stroll"

It is very cozy with a few great seafood restaurants. Nantucket is not an action-packed place, It's more a place to relax.

We stayed at a bed and breakfast. By day we explored the small island: the town, the shops, the beachs. We took a tour of the island. Some down-time to read.

For entertainment at night we hung out with locals at the pubs (it's a well-to-do place), played board games (those cool adult board games had just come out - Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Scattagories) We drank, got high, walked around the Christmas wonderland (no car necessary).

We did have a lot of fun. The people we went with were our best friends - we had fun whenever and wherever we got together.

I think we stayed ~ 5 days. That was about right.

Almost forgot. BK - before kids.

Aruba

Its not a place for all inclusive, you want to explore the place. Me and my wife got on the local bus every day and ate at local restaurants. There are many excursions you can do, drunken pirate ship, beach tour, scuba snorkeling or just hang of n the beach and drink. They also have casinos if you like to throw away money.

The country has its own water filter facility so the water is safe to drink if you accidentally get ice in your favorite iced beverage.

We had a great time one of our best vacations, I want to take the kids in a couple of years.

My boss stayed at Castel Clara two weeks ago on the island of Belle-Île-en-Mer and really liked it. Do you speak French? Monet liked to paint there!

My wife and I went to St Croix in March for her birthday. I loved it. But we are the kind of folks who never vacation to the same spot twice.

As Lurker said, Aruba is fantastic too. We had a great time there.

Cancun is wonderful if you stay away from the Spring Break weeks. We probably had most of our silly, drunken fun there.

Hawaii is an absolute can't-miss. Kauai is my favorite island. Maui is a close second.

You could try Bermuda. I've heard good things about that too but haven't been there myself (yet).

Kauai and Maui are both fantastic. I prefer Kauai as it's less touristy. Both offer amazing beaches, great snorkeling, and warm trade winds.

My niece and her new husband got married this afternoon, and are off for Aruba on Monday.

I have always had a love affair with Bermuda. Rent a home for a month with a maid and Chef, rent some motor bikes and live. Flight time is only one and a half hours from the East coast.
