Mack, he isnt close to where he was before the injury. I think game strength is an issue for him right now. You can pump iron but until you get in that quick power based pushing and punching competition, you are gonna struggle. Hopefully he gets a good amound of reps tonight.

Manziel worries me. I know its probably just precautionary but when a QB is hurting bad enough to go to the trainers and complain about a sore elbow when he is neck deep in a competition to start the season, it is of major concern. Then to be shut down for 2 games. I mean it may be a little bit of the coaches pulling back the reins as they want McCown to start the season and maybe Johnny show was starting to pick up to much steam but if I am Manziel, I throw til my i cant throw no more. I ran on my blown out knee until i was forced to go see the doc. Maybe he is just smarter than I was but I am bothered by this a great deal.

I think Pryor makes the team, just not sure who doesn't at WR.

I think Shelton helps Mack with this.

Not really worried about Manziel. Since he has decided to devote himself to football, I have seen nothing but consistent improvement. The coach wants to develop him and that's the plan. I'll trust Pettine's judgement here.

With the injury to Manziel and Connor.

What will the roster look like there?

Does Connor remain on the team as insurance for Manziel? or does he go to the IR designated to return to allow us to keep Thad on board at least for the time being?

Isn't Connor still eligible for PS?

My guess is he ends up there.

I would bet that he winds up on IR.

Thad probably open the year as the 3rd QB, at least until the team is sure that Manziel's arm is OK.

I'm pretty sure he is.

I'd just be concerned with all of the injured QBs and bad QBs that someone would poach him with hopes he could be their backup. A place like a GB or somewhere that has like Scott Tolzien who has shown nothing in the NFL

We will probably end up with a third QB, but he will be on the practice squad. I would pay attention to the QBs other teams cut. One of them will likely end up on our team.

It's possible. There might be someone our front office likes more, but he's just on another team.

Yeah, I think O'Connell worked with him before. But we basically signed him because no one else was available. I'm just wondering if when more QBs become available we grab someone else.

Devlin has been in the league since 2011, but it doesn't look like he's ever dressed for a game.

Practice squad eligibility:

Quote:
A player can be eligible if he does not have an accrued season in the NFL, although the NFL has now approved a maximum of two spots on the PS for players with no more than two accrued seasons. To have an accrued season, you have to be active for at least six regular-season games. A player can also go to the practice squad with an accrued season provided they were on the 45-man active roster for less than nine-regular season games.

Good to hear. We have pretty much a full squad going into the fourth preseason game.

Any news on DeSir or Hartline?

Hartline I saw him limping off. After he got crushed didn't see him after that.

DeSir was down for a while and then was helped off the field...no cart though.

Pettine didn't mention Hartline on his list of people out.

Orchard though is still out.

'Mike Pettine defends Josh McCown's concussion-producing dive into end zone in Browns' 31-10 loss to Jets'

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...ncart_big-photo

By Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group on September 13, 2015 at 9:41 PM, updated September 14, 2015 at 7:07 AM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Browns coach Mike Pettine, who scolded Josh McCown in Tampa for being reckless, defended his starting quarterback Sunday after he dove into the end zone and got knocked out of the 31-10 loss to the Jets with a concussion on the opening drive.

"He's a football player,'' said Pettine. "He's a competitor. In that situation, guys that are mobile guys that get out in open space, I don't know how many of them would have handled that any differently when they get that close to the end zone.''

The fateful plunge occurred at the end of the 17th play of the Browns' epic march from his own 9 to the Jets' 1. The drive, which knocked 9:59 off the clock and spanned 90 yards, had more plays than any possession in 2014 and featured a perfect mix of run and pass.

Perfect until the end, of course.

Facing a third and 14 at the Jets' 14, McCown bolted up the middle for 13 yards and dove for the end zone at the about the 1, where he was hit by two defenders back-to-back. Safety Calvin Pryor jarred the ball loose and launched him higher into the air, and linebacker Demario Davis earholed the flying signal caller and sent him spinning to the ground at the front of the end zone with the concussion.

It marked the first of five turnovers for the error-prone Browns, who also committed 12 penalties for 109 yards.

"It's a quarterback who's running towards the goal line and has a chance to score a touchdown,'' said Pettine. "I don't know how you coach a competitor, a real football player, to slide there.''

It was a horrible end to McCown's inaugural drive as a Cleveland Brown.

He was immediately taken to the locker room to be checked for a concussion, and was ruled out of the game shortly thereafter. McCown is now in the league's concussion protocol and whether or not he starts next week's home opener against the Titans is in the hands of the doctors.

"You admire the toughness, but you're going to have to tell him 'you're more important on the field to us than off the field and let us get the touchdown on the next play or the first down on the next play,''' said left tackle Joe Thomas, who was excited about this season, in part because of McCown's experience and leadership.

Receiver Andrew Hawkins hasn't been around McCown long, but enough to know that he'll leave it all out on the field.

"Josh has played this game for a long time,'' Hawkins said. "At this point, he kind of is who he is. He smells the goal line, he smells first down markers, from the short time I've been with him it seems like that's who Josh is. Maybe we'll just try to show him a better slide technique.''

Johnny Manziel entered the game in the second quarter, and jumpstarted Manziel Mania with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin on his opening drive. But after a second-quarter field goal drive, things went south for Manziel. He turned the ball over three times and was sacked three times en route to the worst opening-day loss since a 34-7 rout by the Steelers in 2007.

"I don't think (this dashes hopes),'' said Thomas. "It's one game and the tendency is always to overreact after the first game no matter what happens win or lose. But hopefully whatever happened to Josh he'll be ready next week and we'll be feeling really good going into the next game.

"And if not, if it's going to be Johnny, then we'll be feeling really good about him because he's going to have a whole week of preparation under his belt. I think you can see the growth that he's made this year versus last year already and if he can build on that, if he's the guy we can do really well with him.''

McCown completed 5-of-8 attempts or 49 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions for a 79.7 rating. He also ran three times for 23 yards, finishing the game with the highest rushing average on the team at 7.7, which topped Manziel's 7.0 (team-leading 35 yards on five carries).

On his crowd-hushing march, he converted four third downs: a 9-yard scramble, an 11-yard pass to Taylor Gabriel, another keeper up the middle for a yard, and a 22-yard pass to tight end Gary Barnidge on third and short.

The march had the Jets on their heels and wondering how this 36-year-old quarterback who went 1-10 in Tampa last year was killing them.

"We did a lot of good things,'' said Thomas. "On offense, we moved the ball, throwing the ball and running the ball. But when you turn the ball over on the first drive on the 1 yard line, it's not going to help.''

Pettine had chastised McCown after the 31-7 victory over the Bucs for running around and taking big hits from his former teammates -- in a meaningless preseason game.

What did McCown show him by absorbing at least five big blows?

"That he's foolish, for one," Pettine said after that contest. "No, he's a competitive guy. But we've got to do a better job of keeping the pocket clean. There's not many quarterbacks that would be able to get through a full season (healthy) like that.''

Little did he knows his words would be prophetic.

"I've been talked to about taking those hits," McCown said after that game. "I'll try to be more judicious with that. But I want to win, and I want to do what it takes to keep the offense moving and for us to win football games. We talked about that when I came here, the passion of those fans and the way that they support us, we've got to put it back out there on the field when we do it, too. So I try to play that way.

"If that calls for lowering my head to make sure we get a first down, then I'll do that. But at the same time I'm obviously trying to be smart with that so that we don't risk injury."

Cornerback Darrelle Revis counted it one of the biggest plays of the game.

"Calvin made a great play,'' he said. "That was a big momentum shift for us.''

It could also be a seismic shift for the Browns if their starting quarterback is out for awhile.

McCown needs a better spin move. Maybe a spin move where he starts spinning himself instead of the defender.

I'm assuming that quote from McCown was after the TB game, right?

If he was quoted yesterday, he's playing next week.

Grossi or Rizzo said this morning that McCown drove himself home when they got back to Cleveland. I think we'll see McCown start next week.

We get to see the Titans commit to their rookie QB and get valuable experience that will pay off in the long run. We get McCown. Oh joy.

Source: Scott Solomon out 4-6 weeks

Cleveland Browns outside linebacker Scott Solomon will miss four to six weeks with an ankle injury suffered early in Sunday's season opener, a source told ESPN's Adam Caplan.

The Browns had high hopes for Solomon, who emerged after being signed to the team's practice squad in November. The Browns especially liked Solomon as a run-stopper.

But he was on the field for two plays in the loss to the Jets before he was injured.

Barkevious Mingo took over, but Mingo was playing in his first game after having arthroscopic right knee surgery Aug. 6 and was on the field for just 13 snaps.

With Solomon out, the Browns probably will have to make a move to add another outside linebacker.

They have three players on the roster at the position, and one -- rookie Nate Orchard -- missed the opener with a back issue.

I don't get some of this stuff about McCown. He comes out and leads a very good drive and nearly kills himself going for the endzone and some people still act like he only did so-so. I just don't get it. There's not much he could have done different than what he did on that drive. If he plays like that the rest of the season then we got something.

Putting Gaines on short term IR (the one and only available spot) looking like an ouchy now...

Nate Orchard did hardly anything to impress me watching him preseason. I don't like this, I was kind of high on Scott. Endless motor guy with a nickname like Bloodbath and Bonesaw... this sucks.

I've commented that I thought he lead us on a very good drive until he was injured. The only problem I have is that he has to be smarter about it. Sure it's nice to see a QB trying his best to get a TD.

But he was doing the same thing against T. Bay in pre season. Pettine indicated for him to use his head. And not the way he did Sunday.

He is our starting QB for better or worse. We need him to be healthy for the season. Not be short sighted on one play. We've watched QB after QB go down this way. Our QB needs to think about being healthy long term. It seems neither one of them have been able to grasp that concept to this point.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Yeah I know you did. Sorry Pit, just a general comment about how some can't wait to bury their claws into him, doesn't seem to matter what he looks like.

There's a chance we can get him back before the 8 week period, which is what we would have to wait if we put him on IR-return.

Edit: to add, considering the source of these comments I guess I'll have to take them with a grain of salt.

That would be going against nearly everything McCown has done since he was drafted in 2002.

So I am guessing Scott will be slapped on season ending IR?

Hmmmmm..........I could have sworn I saw Mingo on the field on the FIRST play of the game.

Mingo only played thirteen snaps. We basically played Armonty Bryant as our "starting" outside linebacker once Solomon went down.

Good thing that there is the short term IR now.

Oh wait banghead

yea.... well.....

Good thing we have depth at the OLB position!

Would be nice to have Sheard right now....

Isn't it ironic that a guy many thought we could do without did alright without had more sacks on his own in week 1 (1) than the whole team produced against the Jets?

Oh, and before YTown and others come on here and say that New England runs a 4-3, I want to remind people of an article I posted a month or so ago about the reality of the situation.

NE lists their base defense as a 4-3, but they also play a 3-4. They choose which defense to play regarding their opponent's offense.

Thus, Sheard will be playing a ton of 3-4 this year.

And I have ALWAYS maintained that Sheard is better suited to the 3-4 than the 4-3.

Though Sheard still had issues setting the edge, which was one of the reasons why D. Williams was able to gain huge yardage on the outside. Sheard really is a one trick pony in his ability to apply pressure to the QB.
