He's funny, but I still miss the way Dave did this show.
Thoughts?

Dave is the king of late night as far as I'm concerned. There's an age delineation between those who think it's Dave and those who think it's Johnny. And it was Dave for me. But I like what Colbert is doing. He's still settling in, but he's a very thoughtful and sharply funny Christian who wears his faith on his sleeve, but isn't afraid to laugh at it. He's entirely unique to the television landscape. A complete anamoly. And yet his anamoly rests not in his adamant or loud declaration of who he is, but in general inclusion. He mocks nothing but the absurd. I like him.

Was I too obscure? haven't watched Colbert, didn't watch Letterman the past few years. Not very much... Dave is still my boy though.

See, that's what I'm getting used to. And I know it's 'election season', but Dave had a wider range about him. Jack's right, he's settling in and I've always thought he was funny but I just thought he'd be different when he wasn't playing his 'character' like he was on Comedy Central.

Why all the comparing to the legends?
I'm liking what I've seen of Colbert in the new gig, he's doing a helluva job. Such a unique sense of humor. But I rarely have time for late-night TV, much less ANY TV nowadays. Probably won't catch it that often.
Not so crazy about his band so far though...

That's the thing about Colbert. He is different than the others and has his own brand of comedy in late night television. I love it but have been a Colbert fan for a long time. I was afraid he would completely lose his comedic identity going to network late night television.
I'm glad he kept much of his persona and is bringing somewhat of a new twist to CBS late night television. But I completely agree about his band. Yuck!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Thoughts? Dave's early days were really funny, I kind of miss them at times. However, he mailed it in for years. I do like Colbert the few times I've seen him. It's nice to see something different for a change.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

It feels like Colbert is still "acting" to me. Maybe a little, it took Seth Meyers a while to 'settle in' too. It gets smoother as they get comfortable with what they're doing now.

johnny was actually original. dave did his best to copy what he could and did a great job but man johnny could take a bad day and force a smile on your face almost every single time. RIP johnny you were the best of the best! Dave would agree with me =)

Not old enough to vividly remember Johnny (just clips basically) ... but he and Dave are in their own class IMO
I do like Conan, but other than that, I won't watch late night anymore
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

quote by me from the thread "Favorite "Old" TV Shows"
"Starting January 1st, Antenna TV (or simply ANTtv) will be airing The Best of Johnny Carson."
I'm definitely looking forward to this. I can't think of a show I'd want to watch more. I hope they're aired at a good time for me.

Not so crazy about his band so far though... I'm enjoying the helloutta them. They're different from all other bands, and they play a crazy wild mix of things that hail from all over the musical map. I love that they have no bass guitar. The bass line is held down by a tuba! And that cat can shred his instrument. Just last week, the band played Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely?"... and brothaman had that funky bass line on lockdown. Will Lee was a smokinghot bass player (in Dave's band), but this dude makes me not really miss him at all. John Batiste is as fine a keys player as you will find. Raised in the NoLa tradition, his roots are Jazz, but he's equally at home with ANY style. Give'em some time... I think they'll grow on you.

I had to bump this thread to talk about Colbert's band, 'Stay Human.'
They debuted in the Fall of last year, and were impressive immediately, imho. I also think they've only gotten better.
I just watched a bit from a few days ago. Stephen introduced a new bit with a 'Wheel Of Fortune' theme. As they went to commercial, the band smoked a cover the Price Is Right' theme. Absolutely torched it.
You guys really need to listen to this band (in the few chances you get on the show). I was a huge Severinsen fan, and a big Paul Shaffer fan, but I really love what these new kids are bringing every night. They remind me of the energy Branford Marsalis brought to Jay's first 2 years on the Tonight Show.
Just thought I'd bump the thread to see how many might have formed an affection for them. After all, it's been almost 6 months since they debuted.

Thoughts? Colbert is funny and very quick witted. No question about it. Facial expressions are crazy funny. But for me, it will always be Johnny Carson. 100% all the way.

I liked Letterman's old band in the 80s, when they were just Paul, Anton, Sid and Will. They'd have some kick-ass guest musicians sitting in, too. I think session guitarist Hiram Bullock was there in the very early days.

Last night on the Johnny Carson show was Samantha Smith. You probably don't remember the name. Samantha was the 11 year-old girl who wrote a letter to then Soviet premier Yuri Andropov asking him to not use nuclear bombs. Andropov wrote her back and invited her to the Soviet Union in 1983. She visited the Soviet Union that year and became world famous. Last night on the Carson Show (aired live in late 1983) Samantha was a very cute, very sincere 11 year-old girl. From the “you just never know” department, Samantha died two years later in a plane crash at 13 years-old. She’d have been 46 years-old now.

Hiram played on a lot of great albums, his work on reeling in the years (Steely Dan) was very crisp and melodic. Love the guitar playing on that song. Edit: my bad it was Elliott Randal and not Hiram, although he did session work for steely dan.
