the kid is getting paid.

and now MIT surprised him with an offer to school.

if i was him, i'd write a letter saying "thanks you racist rednecks for securing my future for me by showing your bigotry!!!"

+1. This. SO many times over. They never thought it was a bomb. Ever. if they did, as you said, an evacuation would have occurred.

So we have, morons who thought they had a bomb on school property, that didn't evacuate the school...

The police were even debating for awhile to charge the kid with having a hoax bomb, despite the fact he never said he had a bomb and that they never viewed it as a bomb enough to warrant an evacuation. Had this not gone viral, he probably would have been charged and had his life ruined.

So many wrong things happened in this situation, and I'm glad the kid is getting support from some great places.

Please join the modern times Texas, please...

I can't decide what's worse here...

OR
2. Not thinking this was a bomb but then trying to coax the kid into saying it was but still NOT TREATING IT LIKE A BOMB
OR
3. The blatant profiling here

I think cornering a child in a Principal's office with 4 policemen is a pretty heinous offense tbh

I'm not sure it's race related or not and it's going to be difficult to prove. However, I do want to say that some cops have a really bad habit of trying to push for a confession rather than just admit they wasted their time.

Wanted to share a personal story here. A few years ago, the police showed up at my brother-in-laws door and took him in for questioning. Apparently, someone had phoned in a bomb-threat to the local school from a Skype-phone. Since Skype uses a generic telephone number, that number showed up in the caller ID. My B-I-L had used Skype to call the police a year or so about before about something completely unrelated, so they figured that he must of been the one who made the bomb-threat.

He tried for hours to explain that Skype uses a general phone number and that anybody could of made that call. They had him listen to the recording of the call which sounded nothing like him. He showed them his phone history and they still wouldn't believe anything. They spent hours trying to bully him into a confession of some sort and he ended up spending the day in jail. It wasn't until the lawyer got there that the police finally gave up and realized they had little to no reason to hold him.

I think part of the problem is, the police don't want to be "the guys" that had a guy in custody, released him, and then watched him go on to commit a crime. Everyone would question the stupidity of the department that had the guy and let him go free. But there has to be some sort of middle ground between, "Letting them go because you have no evidence" and "Bully them into a confession despite no evidence"

I believe the way this was handled, he'd get paid no matter his race or religion.

the kid is getting paid because he's a Muslim and we can't offend Muslims...

I think if you were arrested, handcuffed and interrogated for making a clock you'd probably feel a little more than offended.

If your point is if this would have been a white who went through the same would he have received the same media coverage and positive attention?

That's a good theory that would make a good conversation.

I think there would be media coverage because when things like girls getting suspended for wearing short skirts or guys getting arrested for wearing with pictures of marijuana leaves on them there is some coverage.

Not like this coverage, but I think the fact that he's a Muslim and there was an assumption that he was morally capable of blowing up a school due to being a Muslim is what makes it the story that it is.

Would a white kid get offers to the schools, the jobs, the White House? I don't think so, but then these offers wouldn't be as self serving as the image of reaching out to a Muslim child who has been significantly discriminated.

What have we learned?

That one has to question everything they do multiple times, probably hire a private firm to analyze the situation and all possible variations, and propose the best solution to not offend, upset or disturb any group, race or class.

And that in the end, it is probably best to not make any decisions or choices, and just live life as a mindless zombie doing as the government wants us to.

I'd say what we learned is if you really feel that there is a threat of a bomb in your school, clear the school. If you feel there isn't enough of a threat to clear the school, you shouldn't be handcuffing and interrogating anyone.

basically this.

everytime there's a bomb threat, the schools cleared out.

dunno why people keep ignoring this part.

I'm not ignoring it and since it was pointed out (because it had not occurred to me at the outset) I have realized that this is probably the most damning part of the case against the school and the authorities.

If they genuinely believed that this device was dangerous, there would have been a protocol to follow... and by not following it, they are basically admitting they knew this device wasn't dangerous...

So now, they have to hang their hat on the fact that they knew it wasn't dangerous but thought it was a "hoax bomb" designed to incite fear... and if that's the case, the kid would have said it was a bomb, not that it was a clock...

Can't speak for 'we,' but here's what I've learned:

1. Bomb clocks count down, not up.

2. Jack Bauer should have been called in. This little jihadist would have been taken care of quietly and efficiently. Nothing's worse than seeing a police force humiliated by a 14-year old Muslim kid and his Kenyan POTUS. This could have been avoided, if people had been smarter.

3. Texas is suspicious of any device that actually moves forward in time.

I've learned that I have my daughter working on a harmless, but very dangerous looking, science experiment... I've never been inside the White House and I could use her getting a free ride to college.

Yeah, I can see what you mean and on top of that The Patriot act can prevent an innocent person like your Brother in law from basic civil rights. A good cop assumes nothing, and won't take things personally. Let the evidence speak for itself.

I think 50 years ago if these things happened we'd only hear about them on the Paul Harvey radio show.

I think the 24hr media stations have to be more like 9hr or less.

Obviously these things would still happen, but I wonder how the results would be different.

Interesting twist to the story.

Believe it or shut up

Hoax Exposed: Muslim Student Ahmed Mohamed’s ‘Briefcase Clock’ is 1970s Digital Alarm Clock

““Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”
President Barack Obama, September 16, 2015

It was a Hoax.
Ahmed Mohamed’s claims that he assembled a clock at home that he took to school is starting to unravel.

Two investigators who have studied the image of Mohamed’s device provided by Irving, Texas police have concluded that Mohamed did not make the clock. Both conclude that Mohamed disassembled a manufactured clock and installed it in a large pencil box without its casing. And both say it is possible it was done to provoke suspicion or to resemble a bomb.

just something a tad bit more credible.

i was combing through some of the other articles.

seem more like a conspiracy site than actual news one.

That's why I labeled the link, "Believe it or shut up". wink

If you watched that video, it's obviously this guy's opinion but he makes a few good points about the ribbon cable and circuit board.

well, being hit by multiple IED's, i can tell you that rarely does a bomb have to be plugged into the wall, like the kid's clock has.

yes, he explained the clock in very good detail. about how it's actually a 70's alarm clock.

i'm talking in general, i doubt it was a deliberate hoax bomb made by the kid.

2 guys can tell by looking at the picture it's a radio shack clock and conclude it's possible he wanted to create a bomb hoax.
