The "schools" don't have as much to do with it as some of you are saying. The attitude of the students has almost EVERYTHING to do with it.

You don't need to have the latest and greatest computer lab. You don't NEED the latest textbooks. I guarantee, take some "poor" school district, give them the newest text books, and say, 1000 brand spanking new computers - the latest and greatest. Give it one year, and many of the books will have "disappeared", computers won't compute, and the students will still be as bad as they were prior.

Reverse the situation: remove the latest texts from a "privileged" school, downgrade them to, say, 1 computer for every 20 students. The success/graduation/learning rate will not decline at all.

Why? It's called "desire". The desire to learn. The ability to realize that education is what gets your foot in the door of endless possibilities.

Too many of the inner city schools have kids that could'nt care less - or perhaps it's better to say "too many inner city schools have too many kids that couldn't care less".

Throw money at the inner city schools - give them each $10 mil extra per school year, and you won't see different results than you get now. Technology is good, but it does not create results in and of itself. The desire has to be there. Take the best teacher in the country, give him/her students that don't care, and all of a sudden it's the teachers fault for poor results?

Our school district (small, well funded - at least well funded for ohio - is now buying some stupid video game thing for gym class - the kind where you have to jump around on a mat to move your creature, or whatever - ya'll know what I mean. The reasoning behind this is: we have to use technology in order to get the kids moving. B.S., is what I say. Gym class - move around. Make them run a few laps in the gym, then have them do some situps and pushups, then throw a ball or 2 out there and have at it. For those that don't want to play, after the laps and situps and pushups, they can walk the rest of the period.

What I'm getting at is technology is okay - but it sure as heck doesn't beat actually DOING - be it in gym class, or science/math/english class. You don't need the latest and greatest - you need the DESIRE.

Unfortunatley, the desire is not there in too many places.

What you are failing to realize is that these kids have extreme social needs that can not be addressed through the school system. These kids are worried about dinner at night, clean clothes, and their lights not getting cut off. Can you understand that these kids might have other things on their mind besides school? Yes, I understand they should take advantage of their education so they can make something better from themselves but its more then just education.

You have to understand that these kids are in a very bad situation and they don’t have the same opportunities that most kids do so you just can’t say “Too many of the inner city schools have kids that could'nt care less”.

I bet you almost anything that if you put those same surburban kids in the ghetto that those same kids will turn out discourged messed up and with problems just like the kids in the ghetto.

What does that tell you? The Environment is B

Yes, the suburban schools are going to have better facilities and that is worth something... but I think, if anything, you actually helped to make his point... it's not so much what goes on in school as it is what goes on out of school that causes one group to succeed and the other to fail at the rate they do.

EXACTAMUNDO. You could take all the money and resources in the world and throw those kids with parents who dont give a crap into a school with all the latest bells and whistles and it for the most part will not make a difference.

I see what you're saying. I guess I just read it as saying that it was the students' fault that schools don't work for them.

No actually I am saying it is the culture outside the schools that doesnt work for them. The education is available to the kids but the culture does not value and encourage education as much as it should.

Also I will point out that while the article we are discussing is about Black males(isnt saying black boys considered offensive by some) this could be said about any poor area. Go into the deep appalachians and you woill find the same thing with white students. So it isnt a black and white issue. It is a socioeconomic issue.

It's a tough situation because you have kids that want to learn, but because they feel they may never leave out of the situation they may be in, be it social, economical or both. Some just turn around and give up.

The culture outside can be a serious benefactor. I was always made fun of because I didn't go to the public school or because I didn't "speak black". I was called "whitewashed" when I was young and I got called it again when I was in college by a so called friend who grew up in the tougher neighborhoods. It's alot harder for African American kids now because some Hip Hop portrays "being hood" or going to jail as "being real" or cool. You can't even become a "major" Hip Hop artist nowadays or get folks to listen to Hip Hop unless you are "real". This is where the message in Hip Hop, as well as from the culture needs to change.

SLim dog we are on the same page. it is tough because of the outside influences and I went to a primarily back school in the "hood" for JR high and then a high school which was promarily black in my own " hood" for high school and I saw exactly what you are talking about. Kids who did well in school were well spoken called " house niggers" or "punks" or many other things I cant really repeat on here and it wasnt just kids it was adults who did it too. I had one frined who was very bright and his mon used to say bad things to him. I remember her telling him that he thought he was better than the rest of the " niggers" in the house because he was doing well in school and was goinmg to go away with the white fols where he would fit in better.

I apologize for any harsh language I have repeated here but this is reality.

Thats horrible. I can't imagine what thats like. Maybe it is better to say that parents aren't the only issue. Theyre just part of the bigger problem. What is that bigger problem? Xenophobia. Plain and simple. Viewing someone different from yourself with animosity and hate because of jealousy, ignorance, etc. Whether it be cultural differences, money, skin color, etc. If everyone looked at someone walking across the street from themselves and didn't think black/white, rich/poor, or retarded/smart we wouldn't have many of these problems. Instead of making snap judgements, what if we just though "brother" or "sister" or even human being!

Man, im just tired of all this hate. Tired of what it does to people and those around them.

Sorry, ranted a tangent. This is just one of my pet peeves.

So what would we expect the past leader of these failing schools to say about the failure...might as well blame it on several issues rather than one main reason. That way she can deflect criticism for not being more proactive in resolving the disturbing attitude toward education in the black schools.

"As the leader of the schools, it is only her job to make the education available... there is little she can do to make the kids want it or more importantly, to make the parents emphasize it...

"

Come on DC...this is the same lame ass "pass the buck" response I normally hear from "professional" teachers. I did what I could but I can't make them listen or perform, they say.

Give me a break if these people were judged upon the results of their responsibilities they would starve

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. That isn't passing the buck, its the truth. You can't make someone do something they don't want to do.

It's a shame KING...I hate to say this, but until we African American's can learn to respect our differences as a people, how can we expect others to?

No Ralphie, it's really not. If you want teachers to be successful, especially at inner city schools... then they are going to have to go old school on the kids... harsh discipline, the ability to fail kids without pressure, the ability to send kids home without pressure, the ability to take a failing dumbazz and tell that kid and his/her parents that he/she is a failing dumbazz instead of trying to prop them up and make them feel good about themselves and pass them just you don't have to teach them again.......
