http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ro...mp;type=fantasyKelly Holcomb: Likely the Odd Man Out RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com Wednesday, May 16, 2007 Update: Holcomb isn't expected to make it out of training camp with the Eagles this year, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Recommendation: Holcomb was originally brought in as insurance in case Donovan McNabb suffered a setback in his knee rehab, but he's on schedule, and Philadelphia signed A.J. Feeley to a three-year contract extension and drafted Kevin Kolb. Holcomb should be the odd man out. Updated on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 1:22 pm EDT I cant be completely certain...But it seems like Holcomb continues to shoot himself in the foot with almost every move he makes. He left a starting spot here to go not start in Buffalo, then he leaves Buffalo to go get cut from Philly. I dunno what hes thinking.

Keep in mind why Holcomb was sent packing and why Dilfer was brought in. That will tell you all you need to know to fully understand why he'll never wear a Browns uniform as long as Savage is our GM.

I ordered it the Sunday of draft weekend from the Browns website.

IIRC, and i probably don't, but didn't savage want holcomb to battle for the starter position, but holcomb defected to the bills over a disagreement over the fact they brought in dilfer in the first place?

Toad, not to nitpick here, but he wasn't sent packing by the Browns.. (this was reported in the PD and on the other news outlets here) he was actually offered a larger contract to start for a year or two here than he received in Buffalo to be the Backup QB.... He was a free agent and turned the Browns down to go with Buffalo,,,,

Howcome...? Who cares... He always been a over-rated, over hyped, low quality back up, #3 @ best... Now the over the hill, washed up, never was is near the end...
He has been around for a long time and made a lot of money for doing very little during his career... Good for him...
He is not needed in Cleveland...

As much as some read these boards, I'm suprised at how often I have to keep repeating the facts of this perticular timeline.
Holcomb was offered a contract to remain with the Browns, but he wanted two things:
1) More money 2) The guarantee that he was going to be the long-term starter for the Browns, meaning that we wouldn't draft a QB for the future.
Now, when we made our "last and final" offer to his agent, they didn't accept and wanted to hold out for more. At that point in time, they had a LESSER offer sitting on the table from the Bills. When they balked at our last offer, Savage stopped returning Holcomb's phone calls and made the deal for Dilfer. Suddenly, Holcomb had only one real offer left, which was to take the Bills gig and COMPETE for a starting spot at LESS money.
THAT'S how the thing with Holcomb went down. He later came out and cried to the media how he didn't feel respected or wanted. BOO-FREAKIN'-HOO!
So no, we didn't go after Dilfer first. No, Holcomb didn't take less money to go play for the Bills. We took Dilfer AFTER Holcomb's camp asked for too much. Holcomb signed with the Bills ONLY AFTER we went and got Dilfer.

Goodluck, as most of those articles are long gone.
Setting that aside, no, Holcomb didn't leave first. He wanted that guarantee that he wasn't "keeping the seat warm" for what was ultimately Charlie Frye.
Now what may be off on a true timeline is when we actually completed the trade for Dilfer. Once Holcomb's agent stopped getting his phone calls returned by Opie, they moved to the only other offer they had available to them because the "writing was on the wall." That was the time we went after Dilfer.
Holcomb got our final offer They wanted more We stopped returning their phone calls We got in touch with the Seahawks They got wind of it and ran before the Bills offer was changed or withdrawn We completed the trade for Dilfer
That's how it all went down.

As usual, you are all wrong.
I'm tired of explaining it. The truth really doesn't matter much to most of you. Believe what you will. Keep spouting off. But be prepared for me to make my little rebukes each time you do.
Here are some real facts:
---KH did not demand that he be the starter.
---He did want to remain here.
---He left because he knew he wasn't wanted.
I guarantee those are the facts and I could care less what was reported.

The way I remember it was that we traded for Dilfer before Holcomb signed with Buffalo. Is that right?

To paraphrase a great line from Major League:
"Forget about it, he's gone!"
Anyhow, I wouldn't be surprised to see him surface in a place like Miami or Dallas later this year. Miami still has the big ? at QB in Culpepper, and I think Romo is gonna be very flat drifting towards aweful based on how he looked by the end of last season.

Vers and Toad will disagree, but I thought it was almost at the very same time.. I seem to remember that Holcomb was flirting with Buffalo and we were talking to Seattle about Dilfer...
In other words, Savage was covering his butt in case Holcomb flew to Buffalo... At least that's the way it seemed to me,
Vers has inside info, I kinda get the feeling he won't agree with what I've written.,., and no, you can't find anything on the subject any longer... drives me nuts, but it was over 2 years ago now...LOL

No. We got tired of Holcomb's BS......wanting to not have competition brought in via the draft while wanting more scratch.......so we started talking to the Seahawks about how to get Dilfer. We stopped taking Holcomb's agents calls. They knew what was up, as they overplayed their hand. He took the only other legit offer he had. We finalized the deal for Dilfer the next day.
Vers.......of COURSE Holcomb wanted to be the starter Why the Hell else would he not want competition brought in? LOL!
We wouldn't promise that he'd be the unquestioned starter for the forseeable future (and rightfully so).
Reports of this surfaced and were corroborated after it all went down. Holcomb even commented on it after he signed with the Bills. He cried about how he "didn't feel wanted."

Quarterback Kelly Holcomb surprisingly left Cleveland by agreeing to a four-year, $6.6 million contract with Buffalo, where he'll back up J.P. Losman. The Browns were left looking for a starting quarterback after negotiations with Holcomb broke down, and might trade for Seattle's Trent Dilfer. . . . Cleveland signed a punter, Kyle Richardson, an unrestricted free agent from Cincinnati. . . . http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A8490-2005Mar4.html

I don't have any "sources". But, that is what I remember coming out as well. If KH resigned with the Browns it would have essentially been a 1-year contract. He would have started 10 games - been benched in favor of Frye - been released after the season. He saw the writing on the wall.

Sorry the way I remember it.
KH had the starting position - we gave him a very fair contract offer (better than what he ended up signing at Buffalo).
It was there - handed to him on the eve of the FA market...sign with us and be our starter for 05.
He got full of himself and said...ok but you guys sit there with THUMBS shoved up your Butts while I explore the FA market cause maybe I can do better than you.
We said - do what you must.
We didn't stand there sitting on our Thumbs waiting for the graces of KING HOLCOMB - we made the deal for Dilfer.
Once that was done it was - sorry KH you had it and you blew it...GOOD BYE.
I mean think about it...a team without a QB is to just sit there while he explores a better deal he was stupid not us! Good Riddance - how some can spin it that we shunned him - I don't get it. We made the offer - sure he said keep it on the table we might of said ok - but who does he think he is? The team pursued other options...that pursuit was his choice not ours.

This doesn't take into account all the reports that came out after camps started.
I sure wish I could get my hands on the transcipts of Savage talking about this and Holcomb's agent talking about this...........

You know what, it really doesn't mean anything. the exact details aren't all that important.. it's enough to say that the Browns attempted to keep him and he chose not to take the offer from the browns and instead accepted the one from Buffalo,, The reasons for those decisions are basically worthless.
Neither the details or Holcomb are worth this much discussion....

I disagree. I think it's incredibly important as it pertains to whether or not Savage would bring him back, and whether or not Holcomb is the kind of guy we'd want back.
That is why I made my original comment, afterall.

Well, if you put it that way, then I suppose it does matter... but only from the stand point of whether or not Phil would bring him back here.....
But overall I still don't think it matters,, tell me, would you rather have Brady, Frye and Anderson or Brady, Holcomb and Frye..
To me, Holcomb is a person that takes but doesn't give.. Brady and Frye are needy, then need a vet that will give. I don't see Holcomb in that role or I Üeel as if Buffalo would not have let him loose...
If we can't get a GIVER in here as a vet, I'd rather stick with Quinn, Frye and Anderson.. two out of three have starting experience in the NFL with various degrees of success and the other is a Highly touted First Rounder...
Let me say this however,, there is a caviat.. if we were expecting to contend this year, then yea, you better get a vet in here... But we have time to grow our own vets (so to speak) SO,, to me, it doesn't matter at all..

I am not sure why people still act like we lost something when we let Holcomb go.
He was at best an average player on a crappy team.
No reason to revisit that past. It is time to move ahead.

Frye is entering his 3rd year, and has a full seasons worth of starts under his belt. From where I'm sitting, he IS the vet.
Consider what happens if we bring in a vested veteran into the mix at this point. All we've done is add a third head to an allready confusing QB situation.
