I agree.
What puzzles me is that many people want Farmer and/or Pettine replaced, but the question remains, who replaces them?
If someone is a great GM or coach, they probably already have a job. So no matter who you bring in, there is no guarantee of success.

Bruce Arians could never get hired as a head coach (to the point where he almost retired). He was the interim coach for the Colts, wins coach of the year, and is now probably a top five coach in the league. John Schneider, the Seahawks GM, is considered to be one of the best in the league. Never was a GM prior to taking the Seahawks job. Between the NFL and college there are dozens of qualified people. You just have to find the right person.

Neither of those guys had a track record of guaranteed success before landing their positions. That was my point. Changing for the sake of changing doesn't guarantee you will find the right person. So until you hire and give them a chance, you won't know.

(I am not saying that Pettine and Farmer are bad.) You can't not fire people because you don't know what the next person will do. If that was the case no team would ever fire anyone (or anyone in any profession).

Oneill.. I'm starting to wonder... but, having said that... aren't we in a sense at the bottom of the barrel? Yeah Chud was a rookie HC, but pretty well regarded.. we had Norv freakin Turner, and Horton was pretty good too. As far as accomplished big names, I'm not sure we could have gotten better. IF we had to bring in a new staff, I don't think we get anyone established unless they were offered something crazy like part ownership as was mentioned above.

When you look at the turnover in coaching and FO's since our return, if you had other options would you want to come here?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

All I hear generally is "Fire them and hire better people!"
Apparently it's that easy..
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

i am sure farmer pointed that out to haslam when he was saying pettine cannot devolope young talent. And where is all this young talent that Farmer has acquired? Farmer is another "on the job trainee" that has failed horribly. Giving him another draft makes zero sense.
After 55 years, I'm walking away from this dumpster fire. Good luck to everyone who continues to hang on. You'll need it.

Sometimes, doo-doo occurs and you're just going to have a bad go of things due to circumstances out of your control. Absolutely.. It's funny how fans are today. I remember growing up outside Pittsburgh. People were ga ga over the steelers and there was not even a remote reason to follow them (the reason I didn't get caught up). They were awful. Then came Chuck Noll 1969 - 1-13 1970 - 5-9 1971 - 6-8 1972 - 11-3 and the run begins. He didn't have a QB in 1969, in 1970 he had two. Hannraty and Bradshaw. Noll didn't give Bradshaw control until Hannraty proved to be "not the answer". Even then, he switched between Hannraty and Bradshaw and another guy people won't remember, Joe Gilliam. My dad was a Die Hard Steelers fan (always disappointed in me for not being)and I remember him saying, the best QB was Gilliam. Dad turned out to be wrong. My point in all of this is to demonstrate that if Art Rooney had employed the same tactics some fans and media propose, After year 3, Noll would have been out and the steelers may never have won even ONE superbowl in the 70's. I think Pettine is not a chuck noll clone, I don't know if a chuck Noll would be successful in todays game. Maybe, maybe not. But Pettine is, IMO, a solid guy with football running in his system and I think/believe if given enough time, he can bring us full circle. What I know is that sometimes, 3 years isn't enough when you start out with virtually nothing to build on. WE are HERE now. I hear a lot about what we should have done, I hear very little on WHAT to do now. Makes taking some comments by the media and on here hard to take seriously.

Daman, your post highlights the reasons why we absolutely have to play Johnny.
Why going with McCown is not a plan.
How Pettine will not be successful without a QB.
How we can't really judge Pettine without a QB.
How the Browns should be doing everything during the week to bring Johnny along instead of allowing McCown to take away valuable reps and prep time from him.
Hell, if Pettine thinks Davis is a better long-term prospect than he should be doing everything he can to be preparing Davis to get in the games.
36 year old perennial loser McCown is not a plan.
The Browns should not fire Pettine after this year. He should get more time. But if he hangs himself with his own rope, it will be hard to feel sorry for him.
And that is currently what Pettine is doing. He's hanging himself with his own rope. He's in way over his head. He wants to be liked and respected too much by his players in the short-term. He's not capable of making long-term decisions. He has admitted he doesn't feel that is his job. He's a prisoner of that awful catchphrase "play like a Brown". He's forced to play try hard guys and cut guys with more potential so he can stand by his word. He makes awful statements like "availability is your best ability".
Mike Pettine is a week to week coach. The players are week to week players. But the fans of the Cleveland Browns deserve a long-term plan and a long-term winner. They deserve a coach who has the cajones to carry out a long-term plan.
Pettine is hanging himself and I hate it. I don't want to start over again. But we don't have a plan. When you don't have a plan, the results are going to be bad. Pettine is going to end up getting himself fired.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Daman...When it was announced that Haslam was buying the Browns, I did some research on him and found that he was minority owner of the Steelers 2008 to 2012. I figured he was aware of the Steelers history, but just in case, I wanted to remind him of that history.
In Nov 2013, I started a thread on Browns message board (before it was shut down) that was entitled "Will the Haslam way = the Rooney way".
It was very detailed dating back to 1933 when Art Rooney bought the team, covering the 35 yrs of futility the Steelers suffered until they hired Noll and kept him though 3 more losing seasons until Noll's team was successful in his 4th season.
I emphasized the parallels between the Browns resent history of near constant changes since 1999 and the road the Steelers took beginning in 1969.
As I said, I posted it on the Browns message board but I also sent it to the Browns who assured me that it would be forwarded to Haslam.
It took Chuck Noll 4 years to turn the Steelers around..hopefully Pettine gets 4 years to prove himself.
Just a note: Chuck Noll's GM was Art's son, Dan Rooney for Noll's first two seasons. Then Dick Haley took over as GM and held that position for the Steelers until 1990.

(What was your reaction to Ray Farmer's texting?) "I'll be honest, I wasn't thrilled about it. Ray and I have had very clear and open conversations about it. I think as you guys will see tomorrow when you talk to him, he's apologized not just to myself but to other members of the organization. In game is very emotional. I'm not going to go into my initial reaction, but at the same time I'm very comfortable with my relationship with Ray. That hasn't changed. We see things very much the same. It's a mistake, he admits it. A lot of it is deeply rooted in his competitiveness. I think if you polled all the GMs, those three or four hours on Sunday might be the toughest of the week. It's an unfortunate thing and we're waiting for the league to hand down the punishment for it. Whatever it is, we'll abide by it." ( Did your trust have to be rebuilt after you found out?) "I would say that it had to rebuild. Ray's very open, very honest, very forward. He was part of our Monday night meetings when we did our post-game audit. We call it our 'after-action report.' We get together as coordinators. He sat in on that. We went back through the game, 'What did we do well? What did we not do well? If we play this team again, what would we do different? What issues did we have in it and what do we have to address moving forward?' He was part of those meetings. When he had a concern he brought it up and those questions were answered."better wear that tin hat. wouldnt want fact to get in your head would you? anyone that thinks farmer was and is not talking to haslam about it is very naive.

I agree with alot of what you are saying.
The problem with any team like the Browns is ownership. Losing teams which in most cases lose because of quarterback play place enormous pressure on winning now.
You win seven games. They want to win nine or ten. They do not want to go backwards. Pettine is a first time head coach. He knows he has to win in order to secure a career as a head coach. Get fired. Hard to get hired.
At this point McCown knows the offense better. He knows where to go with the ball under most circumstances. He most likely demonstrates that efficiency better than Manziel in practice. The team sees that and they like McCown as a teammate.
The issue is putting it on the field. McCown's history is there to review.
How Manziel will perform is still in question.
So Pettine plays McCown at this point because he is the safer bet. Although you and disagree I understand his position.
Once you are established as a head coach. Meaning you have won something. You are always on thin ice.
Haslam has to make it clear that he will support Pettine. No matter who starts. He can see what the situation is at quarterback. He must understand that in order for the team to plan for the future it must know what Manziel can do. That in order for that to happen losing may be part of it.
We can vent about the HC, GM, OC, DC but in the end ownership sets the tone and bears responsibility.

On the other hand .... (and just for the sake of debate)
What if McCown is our Brad Johnson or Rich Gannon?
I am not saying that je is, but just for the sake of debate, what if he iss one of these guys ..... a veteran who finda his "fit" late in his career, and has a really successful finale to his career?
We have seen McCown for one game and one drive. The team has seen him for the entire preseason, and in every single practice.
I would prefer that Manziel were playing right now, but I am willing to allow Pettine to do his job. Perhaps he feels that Manziel has to face some further adversity, by being bumped back to the backup spot, to make sure that he is ready, mentally and from a maturity side, to be the starter on an NFL team.
Just a different side to the argument.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

NO, it doesn't highlight why Johnny should be starting.. Not even close. What it highlights, if you were paying attention, is that even a HALL OF FAME Coach like Noll could have issues making the final decision based on "WHAT HE SEEs and WHAT HE FEELS" Saying that Johnny should start just because a case could be made that Bradshaw should have started is just plain off base. Based on Hindsight, of course, sure, I get it. But in that moment, clearly, Noll didn't think that Bradshaw was the answer. I remember him beating on Bradshaw in the press back then... You know, it could be that what Noll was doing is setting Bradshaw up. Terry was a "wild child" back in those days. I mean, seriously, the NFL was the wild west and Bradshaw was a bit of a wise mouth kid. Maybe, JUST maybe, Noll was teaching him. Kinda like what MIGHT be going on with Johnny Manziel.. I certainly don't know that.. no way to know that. But it's possible. Of course, BTTB will now come on here and tell me I'm clueless but won't answer any questions.. Just insult me, and others. Can't wait to hear what Vers will say... after all, I didn't disrespect Farmer.. so I must be wrong.

Something something, Brian Hoyer, Teddy Bridgewater, Something something..
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Daman, your post highlights the reasons why we absolutely have to play Johnny.
Why going with McCown is not a plan.
How Pettine will not be successful without a QB.
How we can't really judge Pettine without a QB.
How the Browns should be doing everything during the week to bring Johnny along instead of allowing McCown to take away valuable reps and prep time from him.
Hell, if Pettine thinks Davis is a better long-term prospect than he should be doing everything he can to be preparing Davis to get in the games.

No Daman, no... you can't possibly be suggesting that there are other ways to develop a QB other than throwing him out there "to see what we have"????? I find it funny how those criticizing Pet and the FO for having a crappy or no plan by playing McCown, somehow think that "seeing what we have" is in itself a plan? If that's all we need, hell, why not bench Haden since he's looking less than stellar and put Gilbert in the #1 spot just to "see what we have"? While we're at it, sit Mack and put Erving in there to "see what we have". According to the experts here, the season is already over. Screw it, why not make every gameday roster left look like a 4th preseason game?
