The NFL recently instructed coaches not to disclose information about private communications with the league office regarding officiating errors. And on Wednesday a Browns player disclosed information about private communications with the league office regarding officiating errors.

Via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Browns cornerback Tramon Williams said Wednesday that the NFL admitted officials incorrectly flagged him for being offside on a 39-yard field goal try by Chargers kicker Josh Lambo. The attempt went wide right, the Chargers got another chance from five yards closer, and Lambo made the kick.

“The coaches sent in the tape questioning it, because it was close and I thought I got a good jump,” Williams said. “It was time to do or die at the end of the game. I had gathered all the information throughout the game, and I was like, ‘This is my time.’ And sure enough, I got a good jump on it.”

He definitely did. One of the two All-22 film angles from the NFL’s Game Rewind feature shows Williams getting a perfect jump on the snap — a jump so perfect that from the other angle he appeared to be offside.

Even though the blunder gave the Chargers another chance to win the game, Williams doesn’t seem to be all that upset.

“I just move so much faster than everybody else,” Williams said. “I can see where the referees would miss that. . . . Guys make mistakes. At the end of the day you just hope that we can get judgment at the end of the game, maybe review or whatever it may be.”

The real question (apart from whether rulings of this nature will be added to the replay review rules) is whether the league will be upset with the Browns. Although the memo sent last month to teams regarding the disclosure of private communications with the league office was directed at coaches, executives, and owners, the league office likely won’t react well to coaches giving that information to players and players then sharing it publicly.

Regardless, the Browns claim that the same kind of mistake that caused the Lions to lose to the Seahawks caused the Browns to lose to the Chargers. And the Browns seem to be accurate. And it would have been a much bigger deal if the game had been played in prime time.

Water over the dam. Game over. Browns lost. Yes, it sucks. It's not the first time the NFL screwed up. It won't be the last.

We lost. NFL was allowed to pick a winner.

We are listening way too much and way too long to injured and losers IMO. Not buying spin much. Fix something. Solid interviews. Talk like a Brown at least. tongue

Browns cornerback Tramon Williams says the league office told the team that officials erroneously called Williams offside on a late-game missed field goal try by the Chargers, giving kicker Josh Lambo another shot at winning the game. And he did.

The league office says otherwise.

“No, it is not true,” NFL spokesman Michael Signora said in response, via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon-Journal. “The video we have is inconclusive because we do not have a shot from the line of scrimmage. The person with the best view was the line judge who made the call on the field.”

The All-22 footage available the the NFL’s Game Rewind feature has two angles that suggest that the flag shouldn’t have been thrown. In one angle, it’s clear that Williams is lined up alongside his teammates. In the other angle, it’s clear that he times the snap perfectly, moving at the same instant the ball is lifted off the ground by the snapper.

This isn’t about whether Williams was offside (he apparently wasn’t) but whether the league admitted to the Browns an officiating error. The Browns, through Tramon Williams, claim the league did. The league insists that it didn’t.

I think that, in the day of mobile cameras, there is no reason why there shouldn't be a good view of a FG try LOS. To me, offsides in that situation should be automatically reviewed.

The issue for most fans is why didn't the NFL's "part time" official get the call right when it mattered most, with 0:02 left on the clock in the 4th qtr?

With the Detroit vs Seattle screw up and now this screw up by the NFL's "part time" officials, I would say the integrity of the NFL deserves to be questioned.

If the NFL is truly concerned about the integrity of the game, review of penalty calls at critical points during the game should be mandatory and the review done at NFL Hqtrs, to make sure that game officials are not left to decide the outcome of the games.

Shouldn't the ultimate goal of the NFL be to "get the call right" at the time of the call?

I got an idea Tramon, why don't you make a play or stop them before they try a 37 yard FG which I might add some high school players and most college players can make all day long. The point of the story is our defense sucks and couldn't stop a banged up SD offense when it mattered the most. Even if they wouldn't have called the penalty I didn't have any faith that Tramon and the defense could stop them in overtime so the penalty just saved all of us from having to sit through and watch another 20 minutes of crappy defense.

Tramon Williams has been one of our best defensive bright spots through the first 4 games.

Tramon gambled ... he thought there's a better chance to get a good jump (possibly being offsides) to block it than there was for their kicker to miss

Sadly, he was wrong and lost the bet. We're used to it. Move on.

Football is a sport that's pretty much built on self-responsibility. Why change that? Blown calls happen all the time. That's why they teach you to never let the refs get in the way at the end. As much as the refs screwed up, Tramon did as well.

Exactly how did he screw up. Did you read his comments? He understood that the Refs are human and that they can make mistakes. What more do you want him to do?

Now, if he was bellyaching about it, then I'd stand with you but he didn't. he just basically said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "it happens".

Now we know, He did nothing wrong on game day. So there isn't anything to be angry about there either.

So I don't get how he screwed up?

So he screwed up by perfectly timing the snap and disrupting the field goal causing a miss. It's his fault the refs got the call wrong.

Amazing logic.

Sorry. Tramon screwed up by letting us get to a point where the refs could change the game. I mentioned that same thought process in the sentence prior to the one before the refs.

To further clarify: The ref screwed up his job. Tramon screwed up by letting the ref be in a position to screw up the game like that.

Tramon did nothing wrong...the tape confirmed, he played that play (the snap) as perfect as can be done...and for that, Tramon and the Browns lost a chance to win the game in OT, where they had a 50-50 shot of winning.

It is NOT OK to allow the officials to determine the outcome of a football game, yet that is exactly what happened in two NFL games last week.

Let's not pretend that the NFL and it's officials are above taking advantage of their position and duty on a football field to help the gambling industry...and before you start saying that would never happen...it has happened not long ago, in the NBA. If it "did happen" in the NBA, there is no reason to believe that a NFL official might not do the same.
link

The NFL, is attempting to keep a lid on these incidents...

"The NFL recently instructed coaches not to disclose information about private communications with the league office regarding officiating errors."

...and keep quiet about the NFL's screwups, should be talked about and discussed. If the information remains hidden from the public, nothing will change.

I get so sick of Goodell and the NFL "acting like" they never make a mistake or tell a lie. Goodell and the NFL are more concerned about keeping their screwups secret and out of the public domain, rather than doing anything to fix the problem...and that is messed up, too!

You bring up a lot of points and many that I agree with. However, the commandment that 'you don't let the refs decide how games end.' that has been around since the game itself must be respected by all individuals involved. Tramon Williams should have made some more plays during the game. He knows it. That's why he's not really griping about it. Just acknowledging a fact.

In the dogmatic philosophy of football, that espouses extreme personal responsibility, reliance and a message that you can always do better, sense yes. In reality, yes, but not anymore than anyone else.

Tramon Williams has been one of our best defensive bright spots through the first 4 games.

Truth, and one of very few bright spots IMO. It, in all honesty, would be extremely scary to think what we'd be like without Tramon. Think it's bad now, give the QB 100% endless options and the playcaller endless options and our defense can look much worse, yes, much worse than what we witness on Sundays...

I'm not going to try to run him out of town because I do think he's played pretty well for us so far, but I have to say I wasn't thrilled with his initial comments about not having enough plays available. I remember during the game the announcers talking about how our Def was told to maintain pre-snap discipline. Sure enough, in plays where they did just that, Rivers had a really difficult time. But when they didn't, we got torched.

Don't leave it in the hands of the refs because 9 times out of 10 they'll find a way to "eff" the call up. Honestly, I don't care that the refs blew the call. Make a few more stops on defense earlier in the game and we're not in that situation. Period.

Right. How about you don't let Danny Woodhead gash you (with three offensive linemen out and one on one leg)?

I get the whole "don't leave the game in the hands of the officials" line of thought, but the situation is clearly jacked up. With games on the line, officials need to be extra careful in their calls. Heck, in the Seattle Detroit game, they didn't even know the rule.

Pettine tiptoes around crucial offside call in San Diego game

Posted by Mike Florio on October 8, 2015, 3:39 PM EDT

A video from Mike Florio is included in the story..click the link to view it..

Plenty has been said in the last day regarding whether the NFL admitted to an officiating error late in Sunday’s game between the Browns and Chargers. Browns cornerback Tramon Williams contend the league acknowledged the blunder; the league has denied it.

On Thursday, Browns coach Mike Pettine opted to say as little as possible about it.

“It is our policy, I am not going to comment on the officiating reviews,” Pettine told reporters on Thursday. “Just on a general statement on that — I have said this before – I think [NFL V.P. of officiating] Dean Blandino and his crew in New York do an excellent job. They are very candid when mistakes are made — I am not saying that is the case here — but just in general, they are very open about it. That crew in New York is working hard to get the officiating right, and we are very appreciative of it. I don’t get into the details of the report for obvious reasons, but I think also even if you took the TV copy of that play or had access to the All-22 and just watched it in slow motion, it is such a difficult thing to officiate. Imagine putting yourself on the line in front of it and trying to gauge if somebody moves exactly and nobody else moves what it looks like. That is behind us. I have had good communication with the league about it. I feel good about their stance and I feel good about where we are with it.”

Technically, the officials got it wrong. But Tramon Williams’ jump was so perfect, his timing so much better than everyone else’s, that he looked offside. Only careful inspection of the All-22 tape shows that Williams begins to move just as the snap process is starting.

It’s all the more reason for the NFL to embrace replay in all situations where it can fix a mistake. Not every mistake is an error; some mistakes happen because the naked eye can’t process the speed of the game properly. In those cases, it’s even more important to rely on any and all available technologies.
