Unfortunataely for Quinn, he did go 22nd though. What he's worth and where he might have gone have to be swept aside for the most part. I'm not exactly sure how to put this, but the owners have a degree of responsibility to write contracts that match the slot. Some positions can garner a few more bucks, but I think the slot has to be the top consideration. If we pay a 22 the same money as a 15, the slots are skrewed up for next year. As odd as it sounds, it does have a bearing. I think Quinn will have to suck it up and make his money in his next contract.

the only thing i have noticed in all of this is that savage has sidestepped the obvious when asked where quinn was on our board....he always says 22nd......
the only leverage, and it is slight imo is that we started calling for him around 12th....but if i was savage i would say thats just to gauge interest.....
at the end of the day slotting will prevail, but i think quinn will get a bonus in the way of incentives....
if he turns out to be great then he will obviously make his cash in his next contract, but throwing him a bone now might help with the next contract....
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

Along with most, I too believe Quinn will be harder to sign than Thomas. Last year it was QB Matt Leinart that fell and held out.
But the draft simply provides clubs exclusive negotiating rights. If these picks want more than what is their "slotted" amount that's every bit their right and I say more power to them. Sure the draftee and team hold a gun to each other's head. But that is the price paid for taking away the open market. If they would treat all guys coming out of college as they now do with undrafted rookies, there would be no rookie holdouts.

The reason I don't see him getting #12 money at all is the number of years that we can sign him for. He wsa picked after pick #16, so we can only sign him to a maximum of a 5 year contract and you just KNOW that that 5th year will be voidable based upon performance/playing time so he will hit free agency after his 4th season.
There is just no way I see Phil agreeing to a voidable 5th AND near Top10 money.. and that's not even mentioning the whole fewer years to spread that signing bonus over thing.
He will get decent money, but it's not going to be ridiculous or even a speed bump to us. He will look like a pauper compared to Wimbley I'm sure. The one that will hurt us will be the one he signs in 2010-11 when we extend him for 5-7 years.

I agree prpl ... i have (and i believe u have also .. not verbatim but same concept ... ) said since day 1 that he will get more in base and initial signing bonus than the 22 is slotted for but not alot more ..
he will have a contract steeped in performance based incentives that will give him the opportunity to make prolly around what the 10th spot will make if he meets all his incentives over the course of his contract and he will have a voidable 5th year ... voidable by him ..
the reason i asked is i'm curious to see what the 12th - 22nd made last year so when the contract is signed I get a feel for what actually happend and where the contract falls based on last year depending on what he does ..
BQ is going to be the domino the picks around him wait to fall as he will get more than he should .. so thise around him will want to make him the new "bar" for their contracts ... unless the teams cave in and give slightly more than they should cause there afraid of what might happen with BQ ..
its actually going to be fun for me to watch as i have a very business like mind .. i enjoy this stuff .. and contrary to popular belief i would like BQ in right away and would like him to start but will be fine with however long he holds out and if he never starts this year .. and before u all go off the deep end .. i have said the EXACT SAME THING FOR EVERY PICK WE'VE EVER HAD .. I am not changing my beliefs cause its BQ .. i UNDERSTAND THIS IS BUSINESS FIRST ... and many of u dotnhave the business sense to realize a 1 - 4 week holdout for the $$$ there talking about is well worth it .. your talking about a 5 year deal (possibly 4 in BQ's case) .. so its not like if u have a GREAT FIRST SEASON u can go renogotiate .. u have a MINIMUM OF 4 YEARS to prove your worth ... missing 4 weeks of training camp of your rookie year isnt going to have one little bit of an affect on U in years 3 and 4 ..
sorry people but no matter how much it hurts the browns this year or u don't like it ... for the players its makes all the sense in the world ..

#13 Overall Last Year: Quote:
http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=nfl&id=3685 Jul. 22, 2006 - 6:01 p.m. ET
Kamerion Wimbley's contract does not include a signing bonus.
Instead, Wimbley's base salaries of $275,000 and $360,000 in 2006 and 2007, respectively, are guaranteed. And the contract is laden with possible bonus money, including a $6.73 million bonus in 2007. The "buy-back" clause for the sixth year can cost between $2.5 million and $8.5 million. It's expected that few first-rounders this year receive signing bonuses due to the complex nuances of the CBA.

Browns signed LB Kamerion Wimbley, the No. 13 pick overall, to a six-year contract.
Wimbley's deal can be worth up to $23.7 million and includes $9.3 million in guarantees. A rush end in college, Wimbley converts to outside linebacker in Cleveland's 3-4 defense and is expected to start opposite Willie McGinest as a rookie. Getting the former Florida State Seminole under contract will hopefully lead to a windfall of Round One signings.
#22 Overall Last year (couldn't find much detail on this one):
Quote:
http://www.49ersparadise.com/resources/contract.shtml Manny Lawson - Rookie 5yr/ $8.515M Deal, his Bonus money should be $6.28M.
As everyone can see, there is one Helluva difference in the values of those slots and there is just no way in hell Quinn gets #13 type money.... there'd be 31 other GM's flying to Cleveland to shoot Phil in the face if that happened. You start at last year's #22 and add 10%. That puts us around $9.5M for his contract.... I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that that is roughly exactly what he gets... $9.5 to $10M for 5 years with the 5th voidable based on playing time OR a buy-back like Wimbley has (which I didn't know about... helluva nice idea, I like it ). He will get taken care of for sure and I highly doubt we try to lowball him, but he will get paid, in general, according to his slot.

On the other hand, we DO have Shaffer and Frye to man the positions. It's not as though we're completely uncovered at those two spots.
This is all the leverage we need to keep holdouts from happening. Plus I think both of them want to be competing for a day 1 position. I know Brady does.
