The seemingly inevitable is now reality: via multiple reports, the Texans have cut quarterback Ryan Mallett.

Mallett essentially signed his own pink slip on Saturday when he missed Houston's charter to Miami, getting there on his own via a commercial flight.

Reportedly, head coach Bill O'Brien wanted to release Mallett on Saturday, but general manager Rick Smith overruled O'Brien. It made sense, as cutting ties with Mallett before the game with the Dolphins meant the Texans wouldn't have a backup to Brian Hoyer (third-string QB Tom Savage is on injured reserve).

But now, with Houston trying to find answers after another humiliating loss, there is another challenge for O'Brien and Smith, and that is finding a backup to Hoyer.

It will be interesting to see if Mallett draws any interest (he immediately becomes a free agent). Coming out of Arkansas in 2011, he was considered to have a first-round arm but questions about his off-field behavior dogged him, and he was taken in the third round by the Patriots. Mallett's big arm was unquestionable, but he struggled with his touch on short-to-intermediate throws even after three years in New England.

However, there were no whispers or reports of his getting in trouble while with the Patriots, and to the contrary, Mallett was quite active in charitable work and earned his degree from Arkansas in 2013, using his NFL offseasons to finish his classes.

He was traded to Houston in 2014, reunited with O'Brien, who had been the Patriots' offensive coordinator his rookie year. He started two late-season games before tearing a pectoral muscle, which led to him being placed on IR.

Re-signed for this year, Mallett had to battle with another former Brady backup, Brian Hoyer, and Hoyer was given the starting job in training camp. Mallett responded by oversleeping and showing up late to the Texans' facility just days after O'Brien made the announcement.

But when Hoyer struggled in Week 1, O'Brien pulled him for Mallett. He started the next four games, including against the Colts on October 8. But Mallett pulled himself from that game after taking a hit and getting the wind knocked out of him, but once Hoyer came on, he stayed on, and Mallett was caught sulking on the sideline by the cameras.

Then came Saturday and Mallett's excuse that traffic made him late, an issue none of his teammates or coaches had.

We used to have guys call for us to trade for Ryan Mallet.

I did my best not to respond, out of respect.

Please hesitate before posting "we gotta get this guy!"

I remember people ( not me ) in the off season saying that we should trade for Mallett, drop McCown and Manziel and move on. Does anyone still want that ??

Think he and Bowe could make the Cleveland Browns Attitude Dream Squad. Any dysfunction like this is like candy to us. Just astounding.

Oh, and my hat is off to the Texies for cutting him.

Would it be a team building exercise if Gilbert, Manziel and Mallett would skip meetings together?

Not sure where you are going with that, Pit. We didn't exactly have a winning record under Banner either. Regardless, this has nothing to do with the thread topic...

I don't think Pit was calling you a moron, bro.

Seriously.

Pit will fight you tooth and nail, like a Pit Bull, but he isn't a name caller. I know from experience. LOL

He's lazy, stupid, immature, makes horrible decisions throwing the ball, and is wildly inaccurate. I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole. I'm not sure why people always think a large QB with a big arm means they could be good. There is so much more to being a decent QB than size and arm strength

You have to have the arm to make all the throws which covers most legit NFL QBs - More arm than that is not which is important.

I think its been stated by some People in the know...coaches and GMs.

#1 virtue: Accuracy
#2 virtue: Ability to study film and apply to their game and decision making.
#3 Footwork would be there but guess what you cannot have #1 without proper footwork so I'll stop there at 2 virtues.

Not height not Arm strength. Funny cause both were negatives that dropped Rogers probably one of the best QBs I've seen.

Mallet has a big EGO...college and now...I sucked up that EGO sitting behind Brady but remember, HE BEAT OUT HOYER in NE now he will have to sit behind not Brady but HOYER??? I understand why he sulked why he got depressed. If it was done here with us, all would be vilifying our QB Coach and/or OC for not putting him in a happy place. I understand but note don't condone his actions.

So the Texans are officially Sucking for a top Pick and QB...ain't it obvious?

jmho

If only they had picked the QB of their choice last year when they decided to take the always injured Clowney instead. Much like the Browns always do with their 1st round picks, it looks like they also screwed it up.

I understand completely. My statement was simply concentrated on those who seem to take pot shots at Banner for stating what ends up being the truth.

I'll admit, I never liked the guy and still really don't. But I must admit he left us in good shape with regards to the draft.

As much as I dislike it, those writers in the national media are far more often right than they are wrong when it comes to our Browns. So I do find it odd how so many try to downgrade and degrade what they write, when they're right.

Until we get good enough to have an honest reason to dispute such people, I think the fans should bite their tongues. But that's just my opinion.

Turns out that he is nothing but a malcontent. He would fit right in.
