They need someone who has already experienced what it takes to build a winner..someone with NFL experience that they can go to for an opinion. They supposedly already have one - Bill Kuharich. But I'm not sure that he is "the guy". I was not overly pleased with his hire in the first place... 32..If Kuharich is "that guy" it doesn't look like he has the authority to overrule any of the moves our GM and HC have been making.
Under Haslam, it looks as though Kuharich is a firgure head to a couple of wet behind the ears talent evaluators. Kind of like, Kuharich is there if you guys want ask him anything. Does Farmer seem like the type to ask for help?
We may have a situation where Kuharich who was the Chiefs VP of player personnel when Farmer was hired by the Chiefs as director of pro personnel, is too close to Farmer, who worked with Kuharich in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Kuharich may find it difficult to overrule any of the moves Farmer wants to make and is simply too agreeable. I'm not sure Kuharich is the right guy to be overseeing Farmer.
Another situation that might illustrate that Kuharich and Farmer are not the ideal match this franchise needs to succeed. Kuharich was the Chiefs VP of Player Personnel and Farmer was in his second year as the Chiefs Director of Player Personnel when the Chiefs made Dwayne Bowe their first round pick in 2007...
...yes, that would be the same Dwayne Bowe the Browns gave a sweetheart deal, 2 year contract with $9 mill of a $13 mill contract, "guaranteed". The same guy who has not caught a pass for the Browns as we head into the 8th game of the season
The Browns need someone experienced and well respected, such as a Bill Parcells (for example) looking over the deals and draft choices that Farmer and Pettine want to make. Someone who will be objective yet firm about the moves the franchise makes in the future.
[color:#33CC00]This might be a change or addition that is needed immediately after the season ends...if not before.jmho...mac I tend to agree with you, mac. Someone who can give direction to the team filling a position similar to that which Mike Holmgren had in the past. It has been brought up previously who that might be...Peyton Manning!

Someone who can give direction to the team filling a position similar to that which Mike Holmgren had in the past. Thinking about Holmgren is exactly why going that route scares the heck out of me. The Big Show devastated this franchise. No way do I want that scenario to play out again.

If anything illustrates the serious problem the Browns have in the way their management team is structured...the example above should.
Kuharich and Farmer are not the kind of management the Browns need if they are going to turn this franchise around.

Don't poo poo what I'm trying to point out just because you hated Holmgren.
How do you like the Kuharich and Farmer duo?
I believe I've pointed out a serious problem within this franchise that might help to explain why the Browns are so poor at judging talent..both free agent talent and draftees.
Just a guess, but I doubt that anyone realized that it was Kuharich who played a major role in drafting Bowe while Farmer was working under Kuharich in KC...
...now we know why the Browns made one of the worst free agent deals in our teams history.

It doesn't scare me because I already know that Farmer is doing a terrible job. I just don't want a big-name figurehead like The Big Show handcuffing everyone w/an authoritarian position while not actually doing much work. Heck, The Big Show was often absent from the team DURING the season visiting one of his many homes across the country.
I am all for replacing Farmer. He is doing a terrible job and we cannot afford to continue to blow drafts. Blowing a draft doesn't cost you a few plays, a game, or even a season. It haunts you for about a decade.
Thinking about Farmer running another draft really scares me, mac.
I just don't think I want too many hands in the pot. Hire a GM that Pet can work with and you still maintain most of your continuity and the new guy's drafts and free agent decisions really can't be any worse.

These two just made on the worst free agent deals the Browns have ever made...and your ok with Kuharich and Farmer working together.
I realize you want to lay it all on Farmer, but Kuharich was brought in as they guy who would be there to help Farmer as he gained experience.
Maybe you have been blaming the wrong guy..maybe it's Kuharich who is the problem, not Farmer...you consider that?

vers...your kidding right?...your ok with Kuharich and Farmer working together? What? How did you get that out of my post? I clearly stated that I wanted Farmer gone and to bring in a new GM who can work w/Pet. Did you even read my post?

It was Kuharich who played a role in drafing Bowe back in 2007...any guess how Bowe ended up in Cleveland with a sweatheart contract?
Kuharich and Farmer should not work together after this season. Obviously Farmer looks bad, but let us not forget the link between Kuharich and Farmer.
It may be that both will be gone after the season. But I'm not gonna lay it all on Farmer when I know that Kuharich played a role in our personnel choices.

A GM's sole job is to be responsible for acquiring, and making the final decisions on, talent. If your GM is not good at that, then find a new GM. Don't hire someone that can trump him. That's ridiculous, IMO. That looks like a waste of money.

I finally clicked on this thread... kind of wish I hadn't.
Steelers drafted RB Bell in the 2nd round. Farmer drafted RBs in back-to-back 3rd rounds.
Steelers drafted three fourth-round WRs listed. Farmer drafted a 4th round WR this year.
Bengals drafted 2 1st round CBs over the past several years. Farmer drafted a 1st round CB in his first draft.
Jarvis Jones is so good the Steelers brought back 54 year old James Harrison. Is Shazier really all that? Farmer drafted ILB Kirksey in the third round and OLB Orchard in the 2nd round. The year before Farmer's two drafts, the Browns took an OLB in the top 6... you want him to use another 1st rounder on an OLB?
It kinda looks to me... like Farmer is using the Steelers' and Bengals' blueprint, for better or for worse.

When Farmer was hired, my head exploded and I posted a tirade that I wished I could pull back. Last week I went to YouTube to see if any of the Kansas City Chief's Hardknocks episodes were available, so I could post the links on the board. I stated in my tirade that if you were able to see these episodes you would immediately understand what you are getting. And... it isn't pretty. There are smart, sharp, bright guys who know football and know how to administrate without being a tool. Once we had Lombardi and Farmer on board, my enthusiasm for getting rid of Junior and the beginning of a new era dampened to a wet noodle.

In Farmer's case, he was a brand spanking new GM with no previous GM experience...that is why he needed help and why Haslam hired Kuharich to fill that role for the Browns.
Ridiculous?...hell no! It was a smart move by Haslam that hasn't worked out so well.
Just where the problem is, hard to say... ...is it Kuharich's judgement and how he is advising Farmer? The signing of Bowe was likely pushed by both Kuharich and Farmer..but it was Kuharich who drafted Bowe for the Chiefs. ...is Farmer ignoring Kuharich's advice? ...is Farmer following Kuharich's advice?
For the most part, Browns fans do not know who Kuharich is and it's Farmer getting most of the blame for our personnel moves.
It may be that both Kuharich and Farmer are subpar talent evaluators and both need to go.

A little known fact concerning Kuharich's history. He was the Saints' GM when he and Ditka traded the Saints entire draft for Ricky Williams in 1999.
Kuharich was fired after the Saints went 3-13 in 1999. Ditka was fired too!
Kuharich never held a GM position again, though he did work for the Chiefs in their Pro Personnel department from 2000 to 2009..and he helped the Chiefs build a playoff caliber team.
How much input Kuharich has in his capacity as the Browns Executive Chief of Staff, under GM Farmer...we do not know...but obviously the Browns have a problem that must be corrected before the 2016 draft.

memp...Why do you believe Bill Kuharich was hired by Haslam? I don't. I think it was a Farmer hire as part of his personnel staff. What I am saying is we don't need someone over a GM, Kuharich or otherwise trumping a GM. Because that person would be, in fact, the 'real' GM. If you don't like your GM, find a new one. Don't hire someone over him. That's seems like a waste of money. In theory, just fire Farmer and promote Kuharich to GM. It's the same concept.

Mac, we do have a problem. And, Jimmy's way of dealing with past problems almost neutralizes his ability to deal with this one.
A number of guys have posted "anybody on this board could have drafted the past two years and done better"
Usually I let a comment like this slide off.
When I think about it, its accurate.
To me, April goes like this:
I think we all believe that we have a good idea on what these guys should do, then we realize that what they will do is something different, after all they have access to all sorts of information and research that we don't.
Then, we go through one of our drafts and afterwards we hope we just didn't have a clue and all we have to do is be patient and in time we will understand.
Next, a few years later, we realize we were right, or at least a lot closer than we wish we were, or want to believe. The result is we get attacked by our fellow dawgs as not giving the poor little millionaires enough time to develop or not believing in the doctrine of continuity.
Finally, we look back at all the disasters, shake our heads, try to find some glimmer of hope, and ...
