He should have cleared the room and removed her incentive for acting like an ass and called in another cop to assist in detaining her. This is insensitive to cops.

Suggesting that cops could do something logical to defuse a situation instead of resorting to violence at the first sign of disobedience is very rude. You're a jerk.

Yea I agree with that. Had he used reasonable force to try and remove her from class, he would've been just fine(can't believe I sided with a cop)
But he didn't. He treated her like some drunk dude in a night club. Way too much. Reasonable force would have been the teacher yanking her out of the chair and whipping her ass with a paddle.

The girl is 16 and is only acting in the way she's been conditioned to act. No excuse, but she really doesn't know how to make appropriate choices. The same as 16 year olds who drink too much or drive too fast.
Because of that she definitely needed to be removed from the room. Someone suggested that the room should have been cleared. That's actually one of the first things that should have happened. That would have defused a lot of the conflict. No kid should be yanked from their desk for being disruptive. She wasn't hurting anyone. If she hit the cop it was probably because he was stupid enough to let that happen. Judging by the reactions of everyone else in the room, this type of thing didn't seem that uncommon and maybe the phone was ready because of that. I've tried to read the thread to see if this was a cop assigned to the school or if he was called to the school. If he was called to the school I can understand why he behaved like they were on the street, but even that wouldn't call for being restrained in a violent and unsafe way.
Where I work we restrain when either people or the kid are not safe. Every year we have 3 days of training on how to do it safely. On the other hand we are working with kids who we already have established relationship with.
Watching the video I immediately knew the cop was going to be in trouble.
Zero tolerance doesn't mean hurting stupid kids.

They fired the cop for violation of police rules and procedures.
Code section 34.28b, paragraph 71, clearly states:
“Don’t get videotaped while actively performing your duty...dumbass.”

That would teach all the kids to behave themselves. If schools want a zero tolerance policy it should be zero tolerance to kids telling teachers no, acting like fools in class, and not doing their work.

Sounds good, but doesn't work. What you get is increased opposition, drop outs and conflicts at the school, home and communities.
Kind of what's happening now.

Effective management of human beings involves giving them choices. You trick them into thinking they have the "power", but really they're following the two mostly positive options you gave them. That is a great point. However, my thought withthe SC student is the only viable choice would have been the one she gave herself as was evidenced by what occured. Really, it is her "choice" to disrupt the learning of others? NEVER!

That's called a facist police state.
Funny because you want evenybody to bow down to authority, yet start complaining at the thought of said authority taking you're guns.
Please don't cherry pick. Well Swish, perhaps if there was more respect for authority and other human beings, there would be no need for folks to feel a need to protect themselves. PS, I don't own a gun, never shot one and have no intention of doing so. I also do not believe I have ever weighed in on that issue. I do so love cherries...however! :-)

How is his a society issue?
A kid isn't suppose to be down and out after being placed in the foster care system after losing her mother?
Don't every claim moral high ground again. You have none. Being down and out does not absolve anyone from responsibility and learning respect for others. All children need to learn this regardless of their disability in life. This student, regardless of her issue, has no right to disrupt the learning of others. EVER!

Really, it is her "choice" to disrupt the learning of others? NEVER! Even if it's her choice, and it's an ignorant one, the school and everyone else are obligated to teach her and the others the correct choice. The accidental learning that happened in this video was might makes right. There are times when might makes right is the best choice, but not in a school when a student is not creating an unsafe environment. Disruption is not unsafe. It's annoying to everyone and yea it does prevent learning from happening. Everyone in the class, and the millions watching the video, could have the wrong idea of how the police will respond to disruption now and I think if you were to ask the police they would probably say this was the wrong action for many reasons including the damage caused between them and the community. You can't stop stupid with stupid.

He should have cleared the room and removed her incentive for acting like an ass and called in another cop to assist in detaining her. Absolutely not. I have always disagreed with this tactic. Why should the learning of any others be disrupted by one? You remove the issue and move on. When my son was in first grade, there was a student who was angry and had emotional issues. She would throw wooden objects across the room, the teacher would chase her...yes, I said chase her around the room, catch her, call the office while holding the child ( not a great deal of teaching going on there) and the child would be carried to the office. Really? When I heard that my son and others were in danger and their learning was compromised, it took one call to the principal with a conference to the superintendent. I simply gave them a choice. Remove this child from the classroom or move my son. Next day, problem solved. The child was gone and my child's learning and that of others resumed without further disruption. There is no call for anyone to i,pede the learning of,others. Some of you in this thread who advocate remove classroom students and de escalate are the same ones who would cry foul when learning is not occuring to your satisfaction. When issues such as I described above occur in the classroom, it is rarely isolated. Most likely, it is a daily occurance if not several times a day. Really? You would disrupt the learning of others for the choices of one with that frequency.

So the cop was in danger of life from this orphan 16 year old?
Man... I guess the standards for being a cop has been lowered. Now we are going to tack on the word "orphan" in her description to get more sympathy? Good Lord...

Can you go be a principal, please? I would worry about any school that would have me. Just don't go to that school in California where that boy decked his principal... see this level of disobedience is everywhere and they aren't all 150 pound orphan girls.... some of them are dangerous. I have the utmost respect for anybody who is a teacher or a cop. It's a hard, thankless, low paying job... but I could not, in good conscience, advise any young person to get into either of those two fields if they have other options. Dealing with people who are being told more and more to challenge your authority rather than respect it... doing your job well for 15 years only to make one mistake in front of some jackwad with a camera and suddenly become the subject of national public ridicule... its not worth the money they pay you to take those risks and have the lowest common denominator treat you like YOU are the problem.

Don't every claim moral high ground again. You have none. Is the cop supposed to know the family background of everybody they encounter? Yes, losing a parent would be tough... but the response to the request, "You need to put your phone away." is not that tough.

This is in your article... To think that she has now suffered police brutality and is facing trumped up criminal charges for age-appropriate classroom behavior is just despicable. Utter defiance of teachers, administrators and police IS NOT AGE-APPROPRIATE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR... hell being on your phone isn't age-appropriate classroom behavior. It's all inappropriate behavior, I don't care how old you are.

When I was a kid I would act up from time to time but I knew there were limits. I knew if I crossed a line the cost would be more than the benefit I was getting from acting up.
The final line never to be crossed was that of ticking off dear old Dad. That would be as close to capital punishment as I ever wanted to get.
I learned limits. I learned not to go to far. I learned respect for authority which makes for a more stable Society.
Today I see kids and adults doing the exact opposite. No limits. Take it as far as you want, it is your right. No respect when the cop asks you to get out of the car. Run from authority when told to halt. Fight the cop instead of for yourself in Court.
Today our Society reflects this change of attitude and crumbles before us.
Shame on us.

It's all inappropriate behavior, I don't care how old you are. "Age appropriate classroom behavior"..... Perhaps this line of thinking is part of the problem here. If my child was this defiant or disrespectful when told to do something, we would be hauling his a** in to the school for aplologies and to set up a plan to address his defiance. Example: this summer my 14 1/2 year old son and a friend decided to ride their bikes to the soccer fields on a Saturday. There were no games and the fields were empty. What we did not know was that they took some bottle rockets. They also decided to see what would happen if they set one off in the portable toilet. Stupid choice!!! A neighbor heard the commotion, called the State Police and we received a phone call from the authorities. Years ago, this may have been a laugher. Today, there are much stiffer consequences for poor choices. The friend, the friend's family, and our family met at the fields with garbage bags and clorox wipes 1 hour later. The boys collected all the remnants and cleaned the portable toilet. Then we took them to the local curator of the fields and confessed. Long story short, there were no legal repercussions and both boys just completed 7 hours of assistance in closing the fields for the winter. As parents, we requested our children have this time. Our son just told us the other day, I'm glad that is over. It has been living in my brain for 5 months. I believe, as a parent, this is a good sign. Too many parents are out of touch. Often, as our children enter their teen years, parents step out. It is actually the opposite that needs to happen. It is a fine line but logic dictates. Way too often in society we choose to "blame" authority figures and not the individual who made the choice. There is nothing "classroom age appropriate" about this classroom incident. There is however, a connection to what is occuring within societal values and mores.

Just curious about opinions. Should this student have a consequence for defiance? What should her consequence be? Maybe some feel she already has it.
We know she got on TV.
Other students in the room suggested getting out phones when the officer came in.
I have a sneaking suspicion some are creating situations to get their five minutes of fame. Not saying this is the case here as details continue to filter in.

How is his a society issue? Her mom passed away, which is very sad. It's tough to be a teenager and lose a parent. I lost both of my parents when I was 24, my sister was 17, she had a rough time because I was in no position to take care of her.... but why is this a society issue? Where's her dad?

who knows? but i highly doubt the outcome would've been much different.
we keep forgetting that these are teenagers. y'all can claim to be high morals and above the norm all you want, but at the end of the day, teenagers aren't known for making smart decisions, especially after something tragic just happened.
it seems like we've forgotten how to be compassionate in this country. man....nobody cares about the person to the left or right of them anymore. it's like we refuse to acknowledge that things just aren't black and white all the time.

You are very big on generalizations... but thats the problem. everybody supporting this chick already said she was in the wrong. You said recently that maybe we travel in different social media circles, probably true. Raven-Symone said this on the view yesterday... “You do not need to be manhandling a child that way,” said “The View” co-host of the now-viral video. “But at the same time, kids — put your phones away.
“I used to be scared of my teachers, I was scared to go to the principal,” she continued. “And now, there’s so much ‘oomph’ or gusto in younger people — lack of respect — they feel like they can pop off at the mouth at an adult.”She got absolutely lit up on social media... go to this link and come back and tell me that everybody supporting this chick acknowledges that she did something wrong. but the cop lovers forget that. she was in the wrong, but she didn't deserved to get handled like that. Cop lovers? Raven-Symone's opinion seems to be very much in line with yours.. and she's getting torn up for it and it's not by the cop lovers.. it's by the the ones supporting this chick.

but the cop lovers forget that. she was in the wrong, but she didn't deserved to get handled like that. I, for one, never said the officer was right nor did I intimate it. We need to deal with the problem here not just the symptom. Declining student resilience is a sympton of the problem of lack of accountability, lack of respect and entitlement. That is all my pont is. We want our son to be successful, respectful and a productive member of society. But, it's hard!!!!! Vigilance, positive reinforcement, discipline with firm, fair (well not always) and consistent application is a must. It's hard as a parent or parents to do the right thing consistently when it comes to our children. I do know that when we do not hold our children accountable, they quickly become apathetic, lacking in dignity and feel no sense of responsibility toward authority. It's hard to consistently do the right thing as an educator. Your empathy and sympathy should not cloud the vision of the job you are in the classroom to do. When a government creates a problem then steps in to fix it on its own terms......we are headed toward socialism. This form of big government wants us reliable on it. That is also part of the problem and the symptom is control of the people reliant on the government.

No, I don't believe anyone has.
However, there seems to be over generalization and assumption present to suit one's needs or opinions. This is really very unfortunate because it masks the real issues and suppresses the ability to see the cause that is actually the problem here.
The sympton is disrespect. The cause/problem is that, obviously, this student was never taught respect or appropriate behavior for authoritarian figures in life.
In my circle, if you get in trouble in school there is trouble when you get home. Today, if a student has trouble at school, parents march to the school and look for someone to blame, often without knowing all the circumstances. Happens all the time. Many times the said parents end up with egg on their face as the real facts come out. Many are self righteous or angry that they are in the position and continue to blame someone other than their student.
Is that saying the schools are always correct? Absolutely not. But, for the most part, schools, educators and those working within the walls of the schools care about the students and want the best for them.
I am just very tired of this attitude that some students are never wrong, can do no wrong and when they do, it has to be the fault of another. Those are often the same students who have issues in life with authority and end up in trouble becoming the responsibility of tax payers and society.

It is not lack of compassion, it is a change in society where subjective variables are removed from the situation so that all are treated the same. Which of course the rules get set by actions of the lowest common denominator, and hence, we all get treated like criminals for even the slightest offense.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
