Indians match history, top Reds to run home mark to 16-4 May 20, 2007 CBS SportsLine.com wire reports CLEVELAND -- Kelly Shoppach took a chance with a risky throw, and helped the Cleveland Indians match the best home start in their 107-year history.Shoppach made a big play by throwing out Cincinnati's Ryan Freel trying to steal third base in the eighth inning, and Paul Byrd remained unbeaten at Jacobs Field as the Indians beat the Reds 5-3 on Sunday. "It was one of those do-or-die plays," Cleveland's catcher said. "I was a little lucky, I guess." The daring throw -- which Shoppach later second-guessed despite the favorable outcome -- soothed Byrd's uneasiness and got Reds manager Jerry Narron ejected for the first time this season. "Shoppach's throw changed the game," said Byrd (4-1). "I had a bad feeling until that happened." The Indians' 16-4 home start tied the mark set by the 1995 club, which went 54-18 at home on the way to Cleveland's first World Series appearance in 41 years. Byrd, who improved to 4-0 at home, allowed three runs and nine hits over seven-plus innings. He left with a 5-2 lead after consecutive singles by Chad Moeller, Freel and Norris Hopper loaded the bases in the eighth. Link

"Nice".... Speaking of history here's something the poor old Tribe hasn't seen in nearly 60 years of that 107 year "history".
But yet, I've seen in my short lifetime.
Poor Tribe.

That ring belongs to 2 people, Johnny Bench and Pete Rose. Otherwise, the Reds wouldn't even have those rings

I'm happy to be a closet Reds fan when the Tribe is "down," but there's no reason for any real Reds fans to be grubby and rub it in just because they've won championships. It don't mean jack. Actuallly, one might question any authentic emotional attachment to being a Browns fan while despising The Tribe.
But that person is not me,.....

Hate to be a downer cuz I'm a Tribe fan, but didn't the Reds win the WS in 1990?

As a matter of argument though, not as great as The Machine,....minus the pitcher the 8 starters ALL averaged .300,....and, I think, in 78 they had SEVEN pitchers with 13 or more wins,....UNBELIEVABLE !!

Would you like to bet on which team has a better record by the end of the year? The Tribe pitching staff is quite a bit better than the Reds! I'll take our team, Tribe, against yours,Reds, for the whole year sonny boy! Let's put it this way the Tribe will win a World Series before Pete Rose either makes the Hall of Fame or goes out to eat dinner with Bench! I believe that He** would freeze over first, don't you? Go Tribe!!!!!

cincinnati has won championships, but the only baseball you can watch is the baseball right now, and the tribe clearly has the better team, and for me, that's all that matters...

All the bickering over Reds/Indians... when in reality... it doesn't matter. Because the Red Sox are the best team in baseball!

You're right,...it doesn't matter. Given an ultimatum, I would buy a Yankee ticket first.

they were my pick to win the series this year...
if they can keep it together, they can win it, i don't know if they have the best lineup in the game (probably not) but when october comes around, that is the one lineup i want nothing to do with...
their starting pitching is by far the best in the game... schilling and beckett have both proven they can go out in big playoff games and deliver... and then you throw in matsuzaka, who's been good, but not quite as good as the hype... as a third pitcher though? that's pretty amazing...
i'm also a huge papelbon fan, i wish we had a closer like that... they should have never tried to move him into the rotation... he approaches save situations like you're supposed to... and with rivera struggling, there isn't a guy i'd rather have closing out games right now then him...
i do believe the tribe has the second best team in baseball right now... we're getting great starting pitching, but that bullpen is going to be their undoing... they've really gotta try and fix that at the deadline...

I agree. I think the Indians are the 2nd best team in baseball. My pick for the ALCS was Boston/Cleveland.
While I don't think Boston has the best lineup in baseball... I think they are too solid at every aspect of the game to lose to anyone in a 7 game series. Most teams have a glaring hole that they need to fill, and I don't see a glaring need for Boston.

the tigers are right there too, i can't wait until the tribe starts playing them, those are going to be very telling games...
i wish espn would pick up some of those games, it seems like every time they broadcast a game, it's the yankees...
we really struggled against detroit last year, but we're much better this year, it should be great baseball

ESPN did pick up the Sunday game between the Tigers and Tribe next weekend. Actually, FOX picked up the Saturday game as well. I'm heading up to Detroit for both of them.

You can't be serious, if you are, you know absolutely nothing about baseball history.
The bitterness of Tribe fans is hysterical in this thread though.
