I got your suggestion, I get your suggestion, and I still find it silly.
So let's think for a second.

If it's been around forever and it used to be dealt with(?) and it's still around now, then how effective was the "dealing with".

Has violence increased, decreased, stayed the same? have drop-out rates increased, decreased stayed the same?

So I assume you think since the prisons are over crowded it's because schools don't paddles kids.

Have you ever tried to paddle a kid who was disciplined- meaning- hit, smacked, thrown, locked up whatever on a regular basis?

What these kids lack is discipline -meaning- support to learn a skill and practicing good habits etc.

So let's figure out why the kids in those movies and a lot the troubled kids today lack discipline.

Sometimes authority is not as effective as it could be. Recognizing that is not blaming, especially when every post states the girl was responsible for her part. You just want others to believe people should always blame kids and authority is always blameless.

It's kind of simple minded to insist on simplistic answers.

That is the dum.. hehem

Syphilis has been around forever and how we have dealt with it has been effective!

This "not dealing" with people behaving badly is becoming a HUGE problem for today's Society and it will only get worse as more disrespect of authority expands to more people. When the people no longer back up the Police and those people who behave badly grow in numbers and strength, the good members of our Society are forced to defend themselves from them.

Go ahead and turn a blind eye to people behaving badly because once it becomes the norm, we will have no Society worth living in. Think you have seen violence, just wait, you ain't seen nothing yet once our Society collapses!

For the teachers out there:

Does this sort of thing happen a lot? I'm not talking run-of-the-mill insubordination. I mean what the 16 year old girl was doing in the video we are talking about -- ignore repeated requests from the teacher, ignore repeated requests from the administrator, ignore repeated requests from the cop, resist and flail at the cop, and all that.

To me that is so bizarre that I have nothing to relate it to. I had never seen anything like that when I was in school. Maybe I was just sheltered (I went to a suburban public high school.)

I wonder because I try to put myself in the cop's shoes. I wonder if it's something that had ever come up for him, or it was something he was trained to do. If not, that is a really awful spot for him to be in with the cameras rolling. I actually feel bad for the dude because I'm not sure there was a good solution for him and now he's out of a job. At worst I think he should have gotten a warning although I couldn't tell you exactly for what other than just the generalities that it looked bad and he may have been too aggressive.

Again, if his job was to remove the student from the classroom, what exactly is he supposed to do? Somebody explain the procedure in detail because I still think it's always going to look nasty and like a big old bully is beating up on a little girl. Like when Pit says he threw the girl 6-8 feet across the room, I watch the video and I see him trying to rip her off the desk while she is clinging to it. When somebody resists arrest, it is going to look something like that. For as brutal as some are making this out to be, it is surprising that she walked away with no injuries.

Wasn't there a student rally at that school in support of the officer? Like literally 100 students walked out of class and rallied in support of him. I think they were onto something there.

I don't know if there's a law against disrupting the class that would require an arrest. I don't say the officer should be fired, but he sure didn't carry out the appropriate action. Maybe he was put in that situation with out the training. If that's the case then who ever fired him should be fired as well.

Urban schools deal with this nearly all day everyday and a lot of the ones where I live have security teams to handle these situations, which means I think not only was the officer responsible, but the school was more responsible. The best part of security teams is that they often provide opportunities for kids to interact positively with authority figures.

The kids with persistent problems are referred to alternative schools that have small classes, a high adult to student ratio and a lot of training.

The teachers I know in suburban classes always make me laugh when they talk about, "Kids these days".

I'm not sure if there is was a law about it either. I was thinking that the arrest was made because either she disobeyed the officer's commands (not necessarily the teacher's) or that she was resisting. But I don't know.

Anyway thanks for the reply. It is good insight. Obviously I knew this stuff happens more in urban schools but not to the extent that you described.

BTW are you a teacher? I thought I had read somebody in one of these threads say you were, and your reply suggests that you are. just wondering if this is something you have personal experience with.

I teach in one of the alternative schools and to be honest a lot of the kids are pretty cool when you get them out of the home school.

A lot of them are jerks too. laugh

Here's the solutions...

Armed Guard at each school for student protection and a Camera in every classroom to make sure the teacher is doing his/her job and the students are not being disruptive.

Common Sense solutions to everyday problems.

the fact that kids and authority figures combined need to have cameras to make sure they aren't screwing up is pathetic.

can't trust a cop to do the right thing. can't trust the citizens to do it, either.

well there's tons of factors that lead into that.

part of that is the parents back in the 80's and 90's complaining about parents spanking kids.

part of the problem is technology. what can you really do about that though?

i mean lets be real here. the generation of kids don't know anything about having to use a phone line, 56k modem to connect to the internet. they don't know about writing letters.

people wanna complain about the "now" generation, or the entitled, but don't realize that technology made it that way.

why shouldn't we want stuff now? literally everything in life is damn near instant. don't need to read a book when you can just YouTube how to do a project. why write a letter when you can send email? why work hard when you can just start a gofundme campaign? why take the public bus when you can just call an Uber?

it's a societal problem. sure. but i find it hypocritical that people complain about the society that they themselves helped to create.

the past generations pushed us to be PC, to care, to embrace Tech. don't complain when the chickens come home to roost.

She ignored the teacher, she ignored the Principle, she ignored the cop. Back in my day even her neighbors would have (snatched her bald) and would have received a standing ovation. Noe people are sticking up for her for being a total idiot. Just lock her up now for the rest of her life since she is already heading toward that notallthere

I would never stick up for what she did, but I certainly won't stick up for what that cop did either. If I were her dad, I'd pay cash money to catch him out without his badge on.

Not sure about elsewhere, but here, there is a Sheriff in every school during school hours, elementary through High school, they call them Resource officers. A couple of the more problematic high schools have 2.

Yes, while the rest of us fought the LIBERAL/PROGRESSIVES and their agenda. We told them they were ruining the kids but they called us EXTREMISTS!

it's a societal problem. sure. but i find it hypocritical that people complain about the society that they themselves helped to create.
Most of us fought the creation of this Society as many of us fought this Culture of Death but the Libs prevailed and the fence sitters sat by while they did it! They own this mess.

to care, to embrace Tech.
Yep we did that.

No one complains when my well raised and respectful kids come home to roost, they are fine members of our Society. Even they are stuck dealing with the entitled Liberal Kids.

What should he have done, swish? You've been complaining enough. How about some solutions? You got one kid disrupting a class of 30 kids, who are hopefully there to learn, and that kid refuses to cooperate or leave. How would you deal with that kid?

it's hard to say what the solution is, but that isn't one of them.

you realize the rich kids are part of the problem, right?

lets not even get into rape culture, which happens enough with athletes, but tons of ivy league schools where mommy and daddy pay these jerk kids to go to college.

don't act like this is some political party problem.

Don't act like this is a Conservative problem, We have been ranting for years against people raising their kids to be disrespectful, entitled, , dishonest, not knowing how to handle losing or bullies or getting trophies for nothing. We didn't raise our kids to run from the Police when told to stop or attacking the cops while they are arresting someone else!
Ours kids aren't looting and burning towns!

I believe in spanking. We had that held over our heads when we went to school. I saw nothing really wrong with it then and still don't.

I just get upset when people uphold assaulting a child in a classroom.

j/c

If the cop were trying to get the child out of the desk, it would have fallen toward the officer. You can CLEARLY see the officers hand under the front of the desk flipping it backwards. You can CLEARLY see him throwing her across the floor.

This is an assault plain and simple.

I agree because in slow motion you can see how the cop smoothly dumped her out of the desk as she assaulted him with a punch to the face. Yep, she assaulted him alright. Luckily, he took control and got her subdued.

so if a cop grabs her and drags her out the desk, its ok, but if she reacts, it's assault.

It's really no worse than her getting a whipping from her legal guardian. Or a paddling/suspension from the school.

The cop was called in to control and remove the girl. He grabbed her and tipped the desk backwards to dump her on the floor. She punched him in the face while being dumped. He tossed her across the floor to prevent further assault. Then he rolled her and probably cuffed her. Exactly as trained.

I love it when people who don't understand what it takes to subdue and control a person see it on a video and completely judge the violence involved as a Policeman overreacting.

It is like seeing a video of a soldier turning another young man into hamburger and screaming "What an evil thing he did!"

It is uneducated stupidity to judge others on something you know nothing about.
