http://abc7news.com/sports/49ers-benchin...erback/1065420/The San Francisco 49ersaren't stopping with a trade of their star tight end as they seek a turnaround after a 2-6 start. Their shakeup will include swapping quarterback Colin Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert, a source confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday night. Gabbert will take over as the Niners play at home against theAtlanta Falcons(6-2) on Sunday in the final game before their bye week. Earlier Monday, coach Jim Tomsula said the team was "evaluating everything," including benching Kaepernick. Also earlier in the day, the 49ers traded tight end Vernon Davis and a 2016 seventh-round pick to the Denver Broncosin return for sixth-round picks in 2016 and 2017. Kaepernick has been benched for his birthday, as he turns 28 on Tuesday. Last week, he had been described in a Fox Sports report as being on "an island" in the Niners locker room. Sources told ESPN's Schefter the usually solitary Kaepernick had stopped wearing his ever-present headphones in the lunchroom and had started engaging with teammates. Tomsula haddisputed the characterization, as did a few teammates. But that was before their latest loss, a 27-6 defeatSunday at St. Louis. Kaepernick went a fourth straight game without an interception in the loss. But he was also held without a touchdown for the second consecutive game. He threw for 162 yards on 20-for-41 passing and rushed for 28 yards. Gabbert was re-signed as the backup with a two-year deal in March, after he was the lone 49ers quarterback to throw a fourth-quarter touchdown last season -- a 20-yarder with one minute to play and the Niners trailing 42-10 at the Broncos in Week 7. Mop-up duty against the Broncos was Gabbert's only action as Kaepernick's understudy last year. Gabbert completed three of seven passes for 38 yards and one touchdown. Gabbert, a fifth-year veteran, was taken in the first round of the 2011 draft by theJaguarsout of Missouri. This preseason, he completed 23 of 28 passes -- an 82.1 completion percentage -- for 203 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions and a 108.8 passer rating. The news was earlier reported by bayareasportsguy.com. In June 2014, the 49ers signed Kaepernick to a six-year contract extension reportedly worth more than $110 million, including a record $61 million guaranteed. The deal tied Kaepernick to the 49ers through the 2020 season and put him among the 10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Since taking over the starting job fromAlex Smithmidway through the 2011 season, Kaepernick had led the 49ers to their first Super Bowl in 18 years after the 2012 season -- they lost by three points to Baltimore -- and to the NFC title game after the 2013 season. In that game, the 49ers lost to the eventual Super Bowl championSeattle Seahawks.

I'd rather try to coax Trent Dilfer out of retirement if we're using this scale. The Ravens won despite Dilfer, Kaepernick was one of the reasons the 49ers were in those games. His numbers from those first two seasons he started are ridiculous: 60% completion rate, 31 TDs, 11 INTs, 939 rushing yards, 9 rushing TDs (in 23 starts). If I were a team like the Eagles, I'd be all over Kaepernick. We are not in the position to have him succeed because we cannot run the ball.

Wow, I think the 49ers may have forgotten how horrendous Gabbert is. He's one of the worst QBs to ever step on the field. What a disaster San Fran has turned into within such a short amount of time.

I agree that the Eagles should be all over him. Though I'm not sure if anyone else should be. Maybe I'm giving Harbaugh too much of the credit, but I def think that Harbaugh made Kaep and nothing resembling any other options where Kaep did it anywhere by himself.

Kap was a gimmick, nothing more. They had a great defense, fantastic OL and run game and the gimmick was new. Now its old and they just stack the box and wait for him to screw up.
Gabbert may be ready. I rip on DJ for his Gabbert pimpage but the kid was never ready to be stuck behind center. he didnt know how to read defenses and he never had a grasp of NFL coverages.

His star has fallen fast. I wonder what his issue is, other than the team isn't what it was a couple years ago? When teams figured out he can't play from the pocket, it all went downhill from there. Seattle set the blueprint for how to beat Kaepernick in the playoffs a couple of years ago. Don't let him run. He can't read defenses. He is football dumb. The formula is pretty simple actually. I'd still probably be all for trying to resurrect his career in Cleveland. There might be something that is salvageable there.

If anything...it would be MACK for Kaepernick. Its a trade Mack would approve I would think.
Wow. Davis for a 6th round pick? Talk about fire sales.

Yeah Mack is a California boy The 49ers are also one of the only teams worse than us and Mack is opting out of his contract no matter what team he is on.

If we HAVE to have one of the two, I'd do this in a heartbeat.

Kaepernick Benched for Gabbert I get the first two words. No starting qb is playing worse than Kap is right now. He is terrible! It's the last two words that blew my mind. Gabbert? Blaine Gabbert? Really? Man, how low can one go?

I bet Django is leaping for joy somewhere right now. My QBs just won't go away To save some of my virtual reputation, I wanted us to draft Roethli when the Butcher traded away a 2nd to trade up one spot for Winslow and I liked the Falcons deal more than gambling on Gabbert, but when it comes to QBs, I'm as lost as anyone out there. I knew I was risking a lot when Mike Lombardi came out pimping Gabbert too. I've given up trying to evaluate them. Looking at college film just isn't enough to go off of, the intangible part are at least as important. I did really hate Manziel, so there's hope for him, lol. It's ok to take gambles on QBs when you don't have one, I believe that. You have to try again and again. I'd rather see my GM waste high picks on QBs than NT or OG

It doesn't matter, their offensive line allows fronts to get easy pressure while dropping seven or eight guys into cover. Pressure and nowhere to throw to is why this change will make absolutely no difference.

Oh, and Berea..........Mack is playing fine. You don't have to slam everyone associated w/the Browns.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jaso...-return-in-2016The benching of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick this week has only heightened the frayed relationship between him and the upper management of the team and created a climate in which it is virtually certain he is not back in San Francisco in 2016, according to team and league sources. I wouldn't mind having Kaepernick over the poop we've had.

He's a bigger version of Manziel. He can't play from the pocket. He's in season 4 of starting, right? And he still can't play from the pocket. I'm not sure how I would feel about acquiring him honestly. I think I said I'd be in favor of it before, but the more I think about it, I'm really not sure.
He's not a good quarterback.

He at least has a history of being very good. That's better than most of what we have had.
There are probably many better options, but I'd take him over both of the guys we have right now.

I didnt get to watch the entire game but I thought Blaine Gabbert showed more poise in todays game than in his entire nfl career combined. He stood tall, delivered the throw took the shot got up and did it again. He wasnt throwing off the backfroot but stepping in and drivign the ball. It may have taken him a few years but I really liked what I saw before nap time lol

I like that as an option at least for us to make. Too many people are aping what the analysts are saying...he's not a pocket passer yada yada...oh guess what neither is Cam Newton
If that is the "OPTION" we take - guess what we would become the best RUN TEAM maybe in the AFC. And in the AFC North would that be such a bad thing. If Flip is who I think he is...he can conform to the strengths of Kap into our Offense.
jmho...again it could be an "OPTION" I also think we have the best QB Coach for these young guys

O, for one, am willing to risk it. But we would need to play him to see what he "really" has got. Get on with that. Put a question to bed and start whittling our problems dow already.

I can assume that investment would be made only to be our starter. He's not 22 with little to no experience.

Kap could probably be had for a late 3rd or an early 4th....we should take a flier on him....go into next year with him and Manziel, regardless of which one plays you cna tailor your offense the same as both are mobile Qb and go from there.
Yes Kap like Manziel has downsides, but there is also a lot of upside to tap there..and for a late 3rd early 4th he would most definitively be worth taking a flier on.

You think they make a gradual change. You can make a strong argument how Pet and Flip are handling Manziel. Compare Johnny's game against New York and Tennessee to his last game at Cincinnati. Manziel made a huge jump. Physically these guys can play QB. It is the mental sharpness that creates the issue. Flip is preparing Manziel to mentally be comfortable. In my opinion and given time, I think you can make a lot more QBs successful then coaches allow. Biggest constraint is building pieces around the newbie.
