Cleveland Browns waive running back Robert Turbin

By Marc Sessler
Around the NFL Writer
Published: Nov. 10, 2015 at 11:04 a.m.

Robert Turbin's brief stay with the Cleveland Browns is over.

The team on Tuesday waived the third-year running back in order to sign offensive lineman Darrian Miller off the practice squad.
Every game, all season

Turbin told reporters last month that he planned to take over Cleveland's backfield and gallop for 1,000 yards on the year, but the former Seahawks back managed just 60 yards off 18 carries without a touchdown.

The writing was on the wall for Turbin after he didn't see a snap in last week's loss to the Bengals, with offensive coordinator John DeFilippo leaning on the combination of Isaiah Crowell and rookie Duke Johnson.

Turbin is bound to earn a tryout with another NFL team, but it's never a good sign when the Browns -- the fifth-worst ground attack in the NFL -- decide you can't help. Then again, this is the team that let Dion Lewis get away.

The move leaves Cleveland with just Crowell, Johnson and fullback Malcolm Johnson in the backfield.

While Duke Johnson has been a juicy addition to the passing game, the Browns simply don't possess a runner you can sit back and hand the ball to from wire to wire -- something they seemed to promise fans all summer. From that angle, Turbin deserved a longer look.

==============================================================

Wow. They seem to be cleaning house with Turbin, DiManche, and Pop Saunders all released.

Not that it matters but...I don't agree with this at all.

I thought he'd be a solid addition. Unfortunate, I wish him well in his future endeavors.

Hopefully they will combine whats in the practice squad into this thread...seeing the practice squad is filling up..

Actually was just letting you know where the link was.

Maybe picking up injured players and expecting instant results will become a thing of the past...

Wow, I am absolutely stunned by this one.

Did we suffer an OL injury? Did we need to add another backup OL right now?

I really thought that Turbin was going to be part of our long term plans. Man, this is really weird.

For me at least, it means the Browns prefer to have Crowell over Turbin. And D. Johnson isn't going anywhere. I don't see a point in having three man RB rotation. Not "getting into a grove" for anyone.

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

When we signed him Pettine PRAISED him. I mean more than any other player we've picked up. He said we made him priority #1 ... and then he's cut a month later or whatever

Two things I know:

1. He looked VERY slow
2. He fumbled

Two things I assume:

1. He pouted because he didn't play last game
2. Farmer/Pettine have very little eye for transitioning talent

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I thought he did a good job of running between the T's. And no more chances than he got. Course he did fumble to much.

So Robert Turbin was good enough that we had to waste a roster spot on him while he recovered from injury, but not good enough to stay on the team because of Glenn Winston.

Got it.

This team is so dumb.

I wouldn't say this team, but yes this FO is so dumb. The thing is if we see it and it's this obvious the players see it as well.

The coaches are most definitely dumb. It's not even a question at this point.

The players, I don't think they are dumb. They are just not good.

Bitonio is injured. Cam Irving is starting this week.

This team is always good for a laugh.

How many weeks did he take-up a roster spot? 5 or so? Then, he was active for what? 3 weeks? Now, we cut him.

You really can't make this crap up. rofl

I've read this several times now, just what would you do with the roster spot? I don't know, who else was there to take his spot? Please explain

I don't know, something unique, like giving that roster spot to a guy who could actually contribute somewhere.

Seriously, I had to read your post 5 times just to make sure you really asked me that.

I think I was the person most against Terrelle Pryor.

That would have been a better use of the roster spot than having Turbin use it up.

brownie Sorry man. Your probably right about using it on someone who can come in and help, just couldn't think of anybody off the top of my head. Maybe that makes me GM material? brownie

Turbin had double surgery on his hips in the off season and clearly, he looks nothing like he has in the past.

I think he needs more time to rehab those hips before attempting to play again.

I've loved the Duke Johnson pick so far, he's been their biggest offensive weapon this season.

No. I don't think the players are as talentless or as stupid as some like to say. Some of them might not be the most talented nor football smart as what you would hope to have on your roster, but put in best position to succeed I believe many of those would be adequate until they can be upgraded. But for the time being, to not have them put in the best position to succeed is not excusable.

I'll give one example: Johnny extends the play to his left and hits Duke for a 26 yard gain. A couple plays later on the same drive Johnny extends the play to his right and hits Duke for a 12 yard TD.

Going off the field for half-time Pettine tells reporter he wants to get Johnny staying in the pocket more.

In the second half, Johnny stays in the pocket, doesn't extend plays and Duke, our only big play-maker in the game, gets one touch in 30 minutes of football.

I'm sure they have their reasons. I just don't know what they are.

Words from Pets presser today ...

On waiving RB Robert Turbin:

“That was a tough call because I think Robert has proven he’s a NFL-caliber back, did some good things for us. I think it essentially came to the numbers. It’s hard to justify carrying four backs. (RB) Glenn Winston is a player that we’ve had around here for a while.

Unfortunately, had the injury, but we’re very anxious to see where he is. He’s done a good job when he’s been out there. That was the move we had to make in order to get him up. With Glenn elevated to the 53 in that role of the third back, I think it’s time to get a peek and see what’s there. He’s shown a lot on the practice field, a lot, but we have to see if he can carry over to the game.”

On if the Browns’ two open roster spots are to activate DB Charles Gaines and RB Glenn Winston:

“I’m not sure if we’ve put all the moves through. I know there was a series of them, but yeah, Gaines will be up; Winston will be up.”

Browns

Browns activate DB Charles Gaines, RB Glenn Winston

Posted 1 hour ago

The Cleveland Browns on Tuesday activated defensive back Charles Gaines and running back Glenn Winston.

A sixth-round pick this season, Gaines was placed on injured reserve/designated for return with a hamstring injury on Sept. 7. He returned to practice prior to Week 7.

Winston appeared in five games as rookie last season and was placed on reserve/non-football injury with a knee injury on Sept. 1. He returned to practice prior to Week 7.

I'd lose it if Winston runs for 200 yards or something crazy like that.
