It seems another thing wrong with this Society is people need drugs to get by in their daily lives. They look to escape, relax, stimulate, party and so forth. Something seems to be missing in their lives which they look to alter or replace with drugs. Too bad for all of us as it negatively affects the Society we all live in.

My wife is a drug counselor for 13-18 year-olds. She deals with every type of drug addict known to man, but she says heroin is in a class all it's own.
I've never understood how anyone could think "this seems like a good idea" as they're about to shoot their first needle. Scary stuff.

China had an Opium Epidemic in the late 18 to early 19 hundreds which threatened their Society and they were able to fix it. They declared a War on Drugs and won.
They made even the possession of Opium a Capital Offense. If caught with it or using it, they dragged you out of your house and shot you in the front yard. Families were responsible to bury their own dead.

so you're cool with the US putting you to death for cigarettes if they get a bill passed?

Addiction is all to real to me. In 2005 I went through serious back surgery which failed. To properly fix it I need the "rods and pins" inserted and fused together which I still refuse to do. I became addicted to dilaudid/morphine/percocet/tramadol, etc for 6-7 years. I still had the pain so it "justified" the pills. I could literally take 8-10 5mg percocets and drive you to Columbus and back and you'd never know it. Then as the pain became less over time I said screw it and just quit!!! I was clean for 3-4 years. 5 months ago I had double knee replacement. In rehab the docs and nurses couldn't believe how unfazed I was by pain killers. Finally, I said "Hey, I didn't get these knees replaced just to get high for 6 months or so". They then understood. I was then put on not 1mg, 2mg, or 3mg dilaudid, but 4mg dilaudid which is considered the strongest prescription pain med out there. I wasn't put on 1 4mg every 6 hours but 2 4mg tablets every 3hrs. And, I could still drive you to Columbus and back and you'd never know it. I was sent home with a script for 200 4mg dilaudid's/2 every 3 hrs. You can't imagine the looks you get and the # of pharmacies that can't fill that. My wife had to drive to the Cleveland Clinic main campus RX just to fill the script and for the 2nd 200 script when the initial 200 were fini. After the 400 4mg dilaudids every 3hrs I went to 10mg percocets till today. I told "my knee guy/doc" I wanted 5mg percocets and it'll be my last script. I quit once and rest assured I'll quit when this script is done. Btw, if you need both knees replaced, get-em done at the same time. At 58 years old, thanks to titanium, I can now leap tall buildings in a single bound!!!

I had a sister in law, brother and his oldest son ALL die from drug overdoses. It's been a curse for my family.
None of them OD'd on heroin, but the few people I've known that turned to heroin, all did it after an addiction to opioids. Once they are cut off from their prescriptions, heroin is a much cheaper alternative to buying illegal pain killers on the streets.

Damn bro. yea man, meth and heroin is getting out of control. Tell me about it I know all five of these family's and have known four of them since I was a kid. It's a damn shame that these kids got hooked, and that their family and friends had to suffer as well. It's the biggest reason I bitch, moan, and argue about opiods being legal but pot being illegal. I know heroin is not legal but there have been almost as many deaths in this area from overdose of those damn drugs as well, yet everybody seems to be fine with that because they are legal but they throw a fit about pot because it's not legal. Ah hell I have been talking to two of the parents today so just ignore me tonight

About a year ago a guy I went to high school with overdosed and passed away while doing heroin with his girlfriend. Not even 6 months later his girlfriend was found dead from a overdose. She watched him die from it and still couldn't stop herself. Not even the thought of their 3 young kids losing both parents in such a horrible way so close together could make her stop. It's definitely a huge problem in my small Ohio town

Lost my cousin to an OD a few months ago.
My general advice to all vices in life: Discourage your kids from using it, educate people on the dangers of certain drugs, intervene when someone is using it, don't enable the user, legalize it so people don't fear getting help / get pure substances, improve treatment methods.
To my knowledge my cousin ODed because he had quit the habit and relapsed. And some medication he was taking for getting off heroin tends to kill you if you take it. A bunch of people OD because of impurities or people putting in other stronger opiates like fentanyl.
Drug use is a real shame. I don't think the risk of arrest helped my cousin in any way. I wish his family had done more to stop the problem. I wasn't aware of it until his death.

GM.... Where do you live? The Steubenville, OH/Weirton, WV area is one of the worst for heroin right now. Not that I have shielded my kids completely from bad things, but I am so glad that we no longer live with that looming all around them.

I had back surgery and the pain pills started to become a habit. The doctors prescribed physical rehab so that my insurance would pay.
It would have been hard without something to replace the pills.

That might be the percocet talking TTT Oh, it certainly is. I don't get "high" from them anymore but moreso an upbeat "can-do" tude. My knee guy/doc couldn't believe how bad my knees were once he finally put the knife to me. As per he, the x-rays really didn't show the severity/how chopped up they were. I also had the Baker Cysts that would blow up with the constant pounding on a daily basis. I'd get the max cortisone shots in each knee/cyst every 3mos to the day. When they starting lasting 2-3 weeks I said "it's time" and went under the knife. I moreso went to the 5mg percocets to wean myself off of em. From the dilaudid to the 10mgs percocet and now down to the 5mg. I've been thru the process before. But with the new knees I do feel like a million bucks.

Yeah, this stuff is everywhere these days. I was talking to a couple of our Drugs and Vice guys a while back about it because even just a few years ago if a patrolman came across heroin it meant that there was a recent "push". They said that due to prescription pain killers being much cheaper, many people moved to that. Simple Supply and Demand really. Now Heroin is almost as cheap as crack and we're seeing it in a communities we didn't see much of it before.
For me when people discuss legalizing drugs, there are 2 conversations: weed... and everything else. With weed I think you apply the same basic alcohol laws to it.. no smoking and driving, open container type city ordnances, etc... but the other stuff, heroin, crack, et al, are different.
Its a mistake to think that drug laws are intended to be for the benefit of the user/abuser. Sure there's probably a deterrence factor, but its about protecting the community from the negative impact of drug dealing and addict behavior. When people talk about legalizing the harder stuff, I pose this question to them:
Officer DevilDawg comes across someone who is a heroin addict, and has it on them. They have a lengthy criminal history of theft, break-ins, and fraud which is common. Clearly its a result of their addiction.
Do you want that person to be let go where they will inevitably go on to victimize their community? Or do I get them off the street at least for a short time, providing that much more safety and security?
Even though I've lost someone to addiction, I still can't wrap my head around it, and I probably never will. I don't have an addictive personality.
Its a sad situation to say the least.

Agreed 100 percent Officer DevilDawg comes across someone who is a heroin addict, and has it on them. They have a lengthy criminal history of theft, break-ins, and fraud which is common. Clearly its a result of their addiction. Agreed once again. You don't hear all the horror stories about people stealing from family and friends to support their weed habit (not say it never happens) but you just don't get the physical addiction to weed like you do with heroin and other drugs.
