The fact is, no QB simply gets better from sitting on the bench after one and a half seasons. No, not even Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was ready and just biding his time because of Favre.

IF JFF is going to mature as a QB, he's going to need playing time and film to accomplish that. The entire "He's not ready" premise will always be true until he gets playing time.

Someone in this thread said something like, "To look like a veteran QB, you first have to be a veteran QB.'

I don't have much faith in the JFF experiment. I haven't from day 1. But I do know that if you want to see what a QB has, you have to give him the playing time to develop.

Oof.

Flip going in on Manziel.

That's what happens when you blame others between the lines for your ineptitude. Manziel will never really change and I agree that the GM/coaches are responsible for it, if they thought they could change him. If he isn't the little king in his world, he will get a depression. Either way will get him out of the league in no time. Yes, that's my opinion only...

Did he blame others between the lines for his mistakes? I never watch/listen to pressers, so I legitimately don't know. If he did, I'm glad he's getting called out.

There are several kinds of growth.

Not sure how we can be certain on the growth of Rodgers. I was sure of his prospects but don't know about his growth as an NFL QB...obviously he was ready when he took over the reigns.

I sort of agree with you regarding Manziel although I think he can still learn by studying and reviewing from outside the box. But right now he is not Naive in all of this and the process of the plan. But a couple of things he stated.

That during the last game with the Bengals as the game was coming down to the later part...He stated the field seemed to slow down for him.

I agree in his growth process that he has caught up with his stagnation of last season and now he's looking at having the playing field slow down for him to make the quick reads and correct reads. If that is the case and we are on the cusp of that "getting it" "field slowing down" process we should continue to let him grow not sit him down and lose that spot in his Book.

I think we will see him play this week...hard to tell for sure. Again if he wins. I don't see us sitting him down.

I'm quite sure that Tampa Bay, the Vikings and The Raiders would all disagree with Rodgers.

And you touched on something that I think is very important.

The game is "just now starting" to slow down for him. If I gave the impression he could learn nothing from the bench, my apologies. But it's my firm belief he won't become "ready to start" from riding the pines.

I believe it's safe to say we both understand that nothing will help develop a QB more than game reps and film on those reps. Nothing will help slow the game down for a QB and help him play to full game speed more than live reps.

I don't believe JFF will come out and light it up. I believe what we can hope for at best is to see him develop, improve and become more effective. If so, we have something to build on. If no progress is shown, we have a clear answer moving forward.

The only place we disagree is that I expect the same thing from out coaching staff and FO.

Jaworski: Johnny Manziel can't be successful ad-libbing an NFL offense

http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-browns...-an-nfl-offense

BEREA, Ohio -- Ron Jaworski broke down the video of Johnny Manziel ’s start against Cincinnati the morning after the Browns' 31-10 loss to the Bengals.

Jaworski’s take?

“You can’t run an ad-lib offense in the NFL,” the ESPN analyst said Wednesday.

By that he meant what has often been said about Manziel: He likes to ad-lib, run around and make something happen.

“He very rarely is going to drop back, plant his foot and throw,” Jaworski said.

This insight supports Mike Pettine’s halftime statement that Manziel had to take early throws that were open.

One breakdown from SBNation.com showed photos of plays where it seemed like Manziel missed many open receivers and followed his inclination to run. Manziel admitted “there were some things that I think that were easy that I missed.”

The Browns' first pass of the game fit that description -- and was noticeable live and on TV and on postgame review. To get Manziel going, the Browns called a quick throw to Duke Johnson in the left flat. Two receivers had lined up there and drove deep, taking coverage with them. Johnson ran parallel to the line of scrimmage underneath the two wideouts and was very much open.

Manziel looked at him, didn’t throw, then scampered to his right where he threw incomplete to a well-covered Isaiah Crowell on the sideline. That was an example of a play the Browns want Manziel to take, the early read that is open.

“It can’t be the opposite, where I’m looking to get out no matter what,” Pettine said.

Jaworski agreed, saying to succeed in the NFL, a quarterback has to use his mobility only when the pocket read is not there.

“It is about structure, it is about discipline,” Jaworski said.

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel can't consistently beat NFL defenses by escaping the pocket and improvising. David Richard/AP Images
He said in the first half, the Bengals “lost their discipline” and Manziel was able to make plays when he scrambled. In the second half, the Bengals played much more disciplined and limited him to 40 yards.

“His first instinct is to run around,” Jaworski said.

Manziel admitted he has played a certain way his entire life and now he has to adapt.

“I think there were some things that were there that I didn’t see or I just missed a little bit,” he said.

The reason a team can’t totally commit to an atypical offense is because history has proved that in the long run, it will not succeed.

“NFL offense requires structure,” Jaworski said.

The easy thinking, then, is that the Bengals provided the blueprint to stop Manziel. Rush, play Cover 2 and avoid man coverage that allows receivers to break free if he does scramble and make him make the throws.

“There’s no perfect coverage or else everyone would run it,” Pettine said. “It’s on us as an offensive staff to put our guys in the position to be successful.”

And it’s on the quarterback to make the throw when the play that is drawn up could be successful. That’s what coaches mean when they say that players need to “execute.” A play can look awful, but if a receiver runs a wrong route or a quarterback does not throw to the first read, it’s hair-pulling to the staff.

The Browns do have Austin Davis as their third quarterback. He played and won games in St. Louis last season. Pettine was asked if Davis is pushing Manziel.

Before Wednesday, his answer had always been that Manziel was the firm No. 2 behind McCown.

“There aren’t many jobs on this team that are etched in stone, if that answers your question,” Pettine said.

The Browns continue to hope that Josh McCown’s injured ribs allow him to start Sunday in Pittsburgh. If he can’t play, Manziel will start.

I don't like MKC's writing or her football insight but I agree with this article. If Johnny can't get to the top of the depth chart this year without injury (and honestly, he's not going to) then it's time to move on. Sure, throw him out there. I've rarely been more certain of a player's eventual failure as I am of his. I'll break from her here... he's never going to get there. Never going to be a dependable, high quality starter. Never. It's sunk cost. Move on, do it quickly and emphatically.

Of course there's bigger issues. Can we afford to trust this front office in the next step? I'd say no. I'd also say I have no vote in the matter. Sigh.

Yea, I don't like Jaws either but also right. My biggest concern with JFF coming out was how experts routinely showed how many open guys he didn't see/ didn't throw to. And that's not changing.

I might have agreed with those articles before the Bengals game, but, and I know it was only for half a game, I thought he did a great job of staying in the pocket when it was clean, moving out to extend the play when he could and taking off only as a last resort. I was thrilled!
And then we made halftime adjustments and he was shackled, we stopped running and we gained no first downs. I really did not blame him.
But I saw what could be the future. We just need receivers and a competent four-quarter game plan. Then we can say whether Johnny can do it.
I am not opposed to drafting a QB, since once again we are going to be picking high. But I would like to give Johnny the rest of the year, just so we can really know.

All doctors "practice medicine". They try something on you and if that doesn't work then they try something else, and you pay them for both including the one that didn't work.

I don't know what you do for a living. But if it's by using any kind of valuable skill you may have then you should already know that your take on what Johnny needs before he "steps on the field" is a bit far fetched.

So far, all we have in this exchange is your opinion and mine. It's obvious that your opinion is tainted by your dislike of Manziel and that is obvious by your many posts enlightening us on that. I watched that presser twice and didn't come away with that impression. He did, at one point, admit that running out of the pocket is the way he's played all his life so if things break down he's likely to fall back on that. But at the same time he said knows he has to make plays from the pocket and he's trying to develop into that.

I didn't hear anything he said that even remotely resembled Weeden's whining.

Did you watch the presser? In that he's a bit of a different guy than the article would lead one to believe.

Okay I have an idea. We'll make you QB for the Browns. Can't hurt right? We can throw you out there and you can learn it as you go.

If you get hurt, we'll get you treated by a doctor that skipped medical school and wants to figure it out as he goes.

If you look at the tape and are still arguing with just an opinion, you aren't going to get it away. You can argue with Bill Parcells, Jaws, Pettine, and the other guys with just your opinion, but those guys really don't care about jersey sales. They probably have an opinion on the best way to play Eruption by Van Halen too which is probably worth as much as yours on QB's.

Doctors don't skip Medical School. But they sure as hell don't have it all figured out before they open an office and start booking patients.

Regardless of how anyone feels about Manziel's potential, it seems hard at this point to argue with playing him the rest of the year. We are out of it. If you think he could be good, you want him to get a chance. If you think he is terrible, you should want him to play us right into a top 3 draft pick so we can replace him. And if you don't know, you would rather see him playing sandlot football tan watch poor McCown get killed every week.

Browns: Other QBs Johnny Manziel's size successful in NFL

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns won't allow Johnny Manziel to use his height as an excuse for not playing well.

One day after Manziel said he can't see down the field because of his stature, both coach Mike Pettine and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said his height shouldn't matter.

"There's other quarterbacks in this league that are his size and are having some success," DeFilippo said.

"There are other quarterbacks of his stature that have been successful," Pettine said.

Manziel said he stands 5-foot-11½, which is short in a league where most teams want their quarterback to be at least 6-foot-2. Manziel said his height matters because, for instance, the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive ends are 6-7 and 6-9.

But Pettine said that's part of Manziel's learning curve.

"I see part of it as a positive," Pettine said. "The realization is that he's going to have to understand where to move in the pocket to create some throwing lanes. When you study a Drew Brees, you can see that he's not a scrambler but he has great sense in the pocket as far as where to move in relation to who he's throwing to and where the potential throwing lane would be. Russell Wilson is similar in that aspect as well."

In the loss to Cincinnati, Manziel admitted that there were several easy short throws he missed or did not see. Pettine said reviewing video of the game will help.

"Any quarterback who's in that position has to learn it," Pettine said. "Sometimes the only way to learn it is the live reps and get a sense of the game, and when you get a chance to get to the film and say, 'Wow, that guy is wide-open and I didn't see him.'

"That blind faith or that trust has to be information gathered."

"You keep working," DeFilippo said. "You keep working with him, and you keep being positive because he's still a very young quarterback. You show him what he missed, and he sees it."

I don't think we should be focusing on Steven White's breakdown. On the one hand, I thought his "video evidence" was discouraging. On the other hand, we are talking about basically a 22 year old "rookie" QB who gets very little starter reps in practice and was playing in his fourth, disjointed...i.e., non-contiguous start. I would like to see video breakdown of Bortles, Carr's, and Teddy's fourth games as well. Or go back and give us a breakdown of any starting QBs fourth game for some perspective.

This guy went through a lot of trouble to make Manziel look bad. A lot of guys hate Manziel. They'll go the extra mile to discredit him.

Now that's not to say White was wrong. Heck, DeFillipo basically said the same thing in his presser. But I think what gets lost is we know Manziel is not going to be perfect and there will be mistakes, but let's hope Manziel gets the start this week and let's see if he improves. That's the whole point. Improvement.

On a side note, one other thing that I believe Pettine isn't high on Manziel. I don't think they spend much time developing Manziel. If you go back to preseason and even the Tennessee game, Manziel was making those quick drop, quick decision throws that he refused to make in Cincy. The first non pass to Duke was an example of this. I was really impressed with his quick decision making in preseason. I think he's pressing to make an impression because he knows his coach isn't high on him and he needs to make big plays to put pressure on Pettine to keep him the starter. Believe it or not Manziel has actually regressed, and I think it's due to the toxic environment in Berea and everyone not being on the same page.

As I've always said, there is no apparent plan for the future.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I thought Thomas and Greco said interesting things about Manziel in this story:

Sorry if this was already posted.

Talking about how JF gets better every time he steps on the field. At least it's a sign of growth.

Just what would expect Thomas and Greco to say to a local sports writer, talking about your own QB?

Everyone on this team knows that Johnny is Haslam's boy and they know how to address the media when asked anything about Manziel.

Mary Kay...she's know her stuff...lol laugh

More shock in that title then the story...

The big thing for me came in one line:
have concluded that he's not ready now -- and may never be.

That last part -- and may never be was added by her. Duh...that can be said of every prospect.

A lot of stuff with last season. A lot of ASSume in the OH OH he had those pictures of attending a party - he is falling off the wagon.

The part of taking a QB early in the draft...Finally not at 20something!!! I happen to agree even if we like Manziel's progress.

Only change is if he ends up starting the rest of the seaosn...the game slows down for him and he comes out of it with 5 more wins and sure signs of studding out! Ok then we can invest in an edge rusher or something.

Will that happen...odds are not. I think we invest and as I've said we might get a good one where we pick (not knowing our record) Good one - One of the Top 3 with Cook probably as the 3rd choice and I think he will be better than a Matt Ryan.

When you say everybody, exactly who do you mean.... Because I don't know that for sure. You can't either unless you read between imaginary lines. Oh wait, never mind.....

+1 - he makes a blanket statement of "everyone" and then calls out getting called out on it. mac is the leader of the Johnny haters and conspiracy theorists.
