It's a FELONY in case you haven't heard? I didn't know "felony's" were "for anyone"? Maybe you can explain how commiting a "felony" is "right" for some people?
So if it was a misdemenor then you'd be all for it?
 no................
I've spent over 25 years owning this breed to help dispell the "myths" about this breed. Many people have met my Pit Bulls. I guess everybody has their own "personal causes". And this has been one of mine.
Most everyone who have met any of my dogs have walked away with a better understanding of the breed. They begin to realise it's "the people" not "the breed" that they need to find fault with.
Without that understanding, the American Pit Bull Terrior may become extinct. I just think it's a shame that the breed must suffer for the acts of a very small minority of man. And I've spent a lot of time and money to help get that message across.

You will admit that although they may or may not be more prone to bite than other dogs that when they do bite due to their strength of bite then it is a much worse outcome than say a Dalmation ( which are mean little bastards ). Personally Pits don't bother me too much because if they are friendly acting I will pet them and if not I won't same as any other breed.

I agree 100% that it's the owner, not the breed that gives the Pit Bull his reputation. Any dog can be trained to be vicious. My brother had one that let all the kids climb all over her and play with her without nary a concern.

Pit, I understand and totally agree with you on the Pitbull issue ... I just don't like it when people throw out the "It's the LAW ... end of debate" argument, but then rail against some other law in a different thread.

She was five in February. Yes PitDAWG is short for Pit Bull Dawg. TONS of people thought it had something to do with Pittsburgh! YUCK!

The only "laws" I have a problem with are "victimless crimes" that infringe on one's "freedom of choice" in regards to our personal freedoms.
Where people or animals end up as "victims" I support the laws that are on the books. Because IMO,that's what "laws" are for. To protect "others from your acts". If it is destructive to others, laws should be in place to protect those "others". If not,IMO,it's a law of "convenience" and a law intended to "inflict the morals of some" upon everyone.

Portis was wrong in trying to forgive M.Vick for POSSIBLY being involved in a felony at his property! Wether he is on his property or not, does not give him the right to commit a crime.
BUT Portis was right in stating that in some parts of this country, in the back woods, dog fighting goes on every day! People who have been around Pit Bull, breeders..etc know this happens and in some parts of the country, just like Portis said, you have judges, Sheriffs..etc. When I was in school in that part of the country, there were things said and seen that let you know that it goes on alot in the woods. In that particular part of VA, do not think that M.Vick is only person POSSIBLY fighting dogs. Maybe the possible biggest known name but there are officials down there that KNEW what was up!! I have a brother still down there, involved with Pits, and there have been rumors( because thats all the officials down there have at this point, rumors) for years about certain people or places. Portis was wrong to condone Vicks involvement but he was dead on right about how much it goes on!

So being cruel and commiting a felony is "okay" because others do it? Lock them ALL up!
Better yet, lock THEM in a pit with one of these dogs for a while! That'll give em' an "attitude adjustment"! I swear, this board has more excuses for poor conduct and now, even criminal activity than I've ever seen before.
Maybe commiting felony's and poor decision making is what some "expect" from NFL players. Thank God the new NFL Commissioner doesn't share that view and is trying to bring respectability back into the league.

Yeah,I read it. Sheriffs do it,officials do it. It goes on a lot. Vick isn't the "only one".

But that wasn't the point of nDC's post.. he clearly stated that Portis was wrong for excusing Vick's actions... his only point was that Portis was correct in stating that in some areas it's not all that uncommon.... he never once said or implied it was RIGHT or EXCUSABLE... just that it was common and that sometimes so high ranking folks participate.....

Sorry, but I'm not into "well,it's wrong, but lots of people do it" when it comes to animals viciuosly killing each other for "entertainment value".
Not saying he was "promoting it",but to use a list of reasons that indicate it is somehow "common practice" seems to kind of "diminish the deed" IMO
And much of my family is from the south. And from everything I can see in their part of Kentucky, dog fighting has declined in a major way. Harsher penaltys and more involvement from people like myself have helped slow it WAY down.
BTW- My Aunt didn't say "robbing banks was right". She just tried to minimize it too.

Neither is he. Saying it's common is not even remotely the same as saying it's ok.

If it's more common than people think, then it's more common than people think... I don't see how stating that is condoning anything...

Thanks Shotty. That sums it up pretty well.
Training dogs to be mean and placing them in pits to kill each other isn't a part of "the natural cycle of life".

That's just assinine! It's nature, my friend - NATURE! If the lions don't kill, they don't eat - same with all the big cats, hyenas, coyotes, wolves..............God, it goes on and on......even spiders kill in order to eat.
Compare that to training a dog to fight, then having people stand around, watch, bet etc, on which dog will win.
Assinine.

Pit, Since DcDawgfan basically explained my post to you, I will not even re-hash it. But since you are into Pits, please explain why most breeders of Pits talk about the breeding lines of their dogs, list how many champions of their dogs( BTW - Champions of what?? - and you know what that is!), and commonly refer to the champion blood lines of their dogs?? Are they refering to the good nature of the breed or something else???
And since your family is from KY, how many dog fighters to you think they know?? Have they turned any in?? I dont think so! Plus why has weight pulls become so popular now?? Might it be because it is a cleaner sport than the fighting that went on in so many places. See, I never said Portis was right to defend Vicks actions on his property if he committed a felony. BUT Portis was right when he spoke about how common the practice is in certain rural areas. And it spans all walks of life. Example, you might get into trouble in a city area firing off your gun, but out in the country, not one person will say a word to you on your own property if you are not bothering them or potentially harming them. JUST LIKE Dog fighting in alot of areas!
Now just let me know if you still need that " understanding eye dog"!..LOL

Not to step on pit's toes, and I know you weren't responding to me, but what the hell is this? Every breed of dog has "champions". It's called the AKC, and I'm sure there are other sancitoning bodies out there as well. Do you think the AKC "champions" fighters? There's a champ in every breed, several times per year, and yes, having a dog from a "champion" blood line means it's "worth" more. Lab, rot,, retriever, poodle, pug, shephard, beagle, you name it, there are several champion in each breed every year.
Bottom line? Dumb question.
Also, I can't stand pitbulls, would never want to be around one, and would never let my family be around one, so pit and I disagree there. In other words, I am unbiased.

Watching it for enjoyment is exactly the same. The premise is different (one's instinct and one is trained) but the results are the same - one dies while you watch.

Not even close. Sex is an act between to willing people - no violence involved (for the majority). Rape is an act of brutality.
Dog fights are an act of violence, a lion tearing apart a zebra is a violent act. Yes, it's nature - but watching it for enjoyment is no different than watching 2 dogs fight for enjoyment.

There was a guy around SW Ohio not long ago (I guess he also had dog-fighting charges in 4 other states)...you know how he trained the dogs? He'd break the hinds legs of a mutt or a wash-up, throw it in there with them a let 'em go at it...a sparring session if you will.
There's a big difference between watching animals in the wild goes through their natural course of actions and watching two animals that have been tortured and bred for no other purpose but to kill or be killed.

You said that watching a vicious act of nature was the same as enjoying dog fights. You didn't say "watching it for enjoyment".
Watching an act of nature does not mean that you enjoy it. For example: Millions watched the footage of hurricane Katrina and it's aftermath, but very few enjoyed it.
My analogy was spot on.

UKC Breeders? Those would be "show dogs" BTW. Seems you know "only" about the WRONG type of breeders. The UKC (United Kennel Club) recognizes the breed and uses the dogs for show, not fighting. Sorry, but that's generaly where I get my pups. They're actually trying to help the breed as well. So yes, their "Championships" are show bloodlines, not fighting ones. Of course the dogs are bigger than the "fighting bred dogs". I had a male that was about 105lbs. My current female is around 70 lbs. So they're not the "small, big headed" fighting type of Pit. There's more than one kind of breeder and style of Pits thahn you thought huh? SURPRISE!

The pulls have become popular because of people like myself. Who wish to show the world there's "another side" to the breed. We're trying to help STOP the breed from becoming extinct. From them being OUTLAWED everywhere! Which is due to the fighting Pits!
Yes my family in Ky. HAS turned people in for fighting Pits. I turn in people for fighting Pits! It's as bad or WORSE than watching a man beat a dog to death with a baseball bat and doing and saying NOTHING! IMO,it's even WORSE than that!
Animals and small children are helpless in this world. Some of us give a damn. Some of us don't. BTW- I've NEVER known ANYONE that's into "dog pulls" that have EVER been associated with "fighting the breed". The dogs LOVE pulling! It is a "natural instinct" of the dogs. They enjoy it. Hell,my dog will pull two or three of my grandkids around at one time in their wagons and on snow sleighs! But people have "dog pulls" for friendly competition. (With a few side bets of course). But there's not the "bloodsport" money there. No big $$$$. It's two COMPLETLY different sets of people. With different mind sets. One group enjoys seeing their dogs work at what they enjoy. The other group is a blood thirsty bunch of cruel felons. Don't confuse the two.
Quote:
See, I never said Portis was right to defend Vicks actions on his property if he committed a felony. BUT Portis was right when he spoke about how common the practice is in certain rural areas.
Irregardless,it is a felony and more and more people like myself and my family are making it LESS common place. And minimizing the act and making it sound "trivial" as Portis did,is tasteless and classless.
Quote:

It's not against the law to shoot a gun in rural areas. Shooting a gun in a rural area is legal, fighting Pits is a felony. See the difference there?
Quote:

Calling the law for them shooting a gun, which IS legal, would be bothering them. Reporting a felony is being a good citizen. See the difference there? I hope so....................

I think the one with the "understanding problem" is the guy who seems to "minimize a felony" because of his "geographic location" is the one having a problem understanding.
