Personally, I find Dalton's reaction to be pathetic. He's a grown man in a profession that requires toughness. Sounds like Watt bruised his ovaries.

Andy Dalton not happy with J.J. Watt's 'Red Ryder BB gun' comment

J.J. Watt's postgame comment about Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was surprising enough that ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters let out a "Wow!" as soon as he said it.

"Our goal was to come in here and make the 'Red Rifle' look like a Red Ryder BB gun, and I think we did that," the Houston Texans star defensive end said.

And Watt, seemingly realizing what he just said on live television, started talking about how Dalton was a great player and the Bengals are a great team (because goodness knows we can't have an athlete display any personality), but he wasn't going to take back that line.

And it probably would have died there, but Dalton took it personally after the Bengals' 10-6 loss.

"There's a lot of kids and a lot of people who look up to him," Dalton said in his postgame news conference. "For him to make comments like that, he's showing that's acceptable to do that kind of stuff, to say that kind of stuff. It's disappointing for one of the best players in this league to come out and say something like that. That's all I'm going to say about that. I think J.J. is a good player, but for him to be one of the best in this league and to show that integrity, and to show that type of ... it shows what he's about, which is disappointing."

Ah, the "Won't someone think of the children!" angle. This all seems tame. Watt was obviously fired up after the game, ripping critics who didn't think the Texans could beat Cincinnati (how dare they doubt the 4-5 Texans!). Dalton was likely upset to have just lost a game, and then had to hear that he was mocked afterward by an opponent on national TV. Still, it seemed strange to be so angry over kind of a lame insult. Let's just say this isn't exactly a worthy sequel to Tupac and Biggie's beef.

The game might have been dreadfully boring, but at least it started one of the strangest feuds we'll see in the NFL this season.

Exactly. What Watt said wasn't bad at all, I can't believe people are looking at that comment as being bad in any way. It's ridiculous.

Outside of Dalton, I'm not sure anyone is looking at it being bad. And his reaction was embarrassing.

So if the shoe fits wear it, the Houston defense did make him look like a Red Ryder BB gun last night. Be a man Dalton and say yes I didn't have my best game and they did a good job holding us to 6 points. What a cry baby whiner, what about the kids you might ask BB gun? I'd reply every kid should strive to be as great as JJ Watt, to be as passionate about something that he is. You sucked again in primetime BB gun go and cry to Marvin that this person was calling you names. What a joke, I saw it live and I was laughing along with most other fans.

I was also laughing in the 3rd quarter when the bungles were down 10-6 and the fans were booing. I looked at my wife and said that's why Cincy fans are fair weather fans, the score was 10-6 in the 3rd quarter and their team is 8-0 on the year and fans are booing them? How about the fair weather fans take a 2-8 team going nowhere and then you can boo, oh wait if their team was 2-8 nobody would be at the game to boo that's right. wink

As for Dalton, shut up. Own the butt kicking or don't comment when asked about Watt. I'd respect Andy if he had said something along these lines, "A BB gun? I don't think we were even that threatening. A broken Nerf gun missing the foam pellets is a better analogy of my play this evening. I'll fix it and come back stronger."

Whine about what the kids will think? Please. Grow a pair.

Somebody needs a slow mani/pedi, Red. New nails and you will feel great again.

Gut test for fans of the redhead. I loved it. Hats off to the Texies defense! Good showing that.

It sounded bad but sometimes I feel bad for these guys, come in off an emotional game and don't get questions about the game, you get a question about one of the other teams players post game comments that you didn't hear or were not aware of the context?

I know that from the comfort of our living rooms or the next day we all can figure out what should have been said, but we aren't sitting in the chair in front of reporters after our worst performance of the year.

The question, which the reporter asked without context, really does make it sound like JJ Watt was being very condescending... when in fact, if you listened to JJs comments he was very complimentary of how good the Bengals are, how good Dalton is, and very proud that his own team was able to neutralize them the way they did... and in the middle he made the BB gun joke.

In the end, what he should have said in that moment was, "I didn't hear the comment so I'm not going to comment on it. Do you have any questions about the game?"

I heard it and it didn't sound bad at all to me. That could be because I hate the bengals. But Watt didn't say "The call Dalton the 'Red Rife' but he's more like a 'Red Ryder BB Gun'. He didn't say it that way.

But like Cam Newton said, "If you don't like me dancing in the end zone then don't let me in there", Dalton, if he doesn't like comments like that then he shouldn't flame out in National TV games.

Ya know Andy, if you don't give them the ammunition they can't shoot.

Being a Browns fan I loved it. I hope we're witnessing the bengals fall to 8-8. Man, that would be great.

Man.... Dalton is a mess. He's got talent but he's such a mental midget. Watt's comments were not bad... it's a ribbing after completely dominating him. Just own that Dalton. You got owned now take it. I'm telling ya... the return of "PC" is in full effect and it's like it's going to be worse than ever. What's next? Instead of a Super Bowl winner all league players just get Participant Trophies!... #sigh

Dalton did backtrack today. He said he saw the rest Watt's comments and said he heard it out of context, which he did. But oh well. That doesn't absolve Dalton completely, but it makes him look a bit better.

The thing I don't like, HE had the nickname. If you have a nickname, do a signature celebration, and talk a lot then be prepared for others to use that against you.

I'll never forget how Tomlinson cried like a little baby when the Pats scored a late TD to beat the Chargers in the playoffs and the player did Tomlinson's trademark TD celebration. LaDainian said it was classless and terrible sportsmanship to show him up like that. Really? And it wasn't showing up all the opposing defenses when you did your little patented celebration over a hundred times? This isn't an "act like you've been there before" comment. If you gloat, be ready for it to be shoved back in your face. And when it does, and it will, take it.

Dalton was horrible last night. He threw the ball out of bounds like Quinn on nearly every sideline pass. Most of the bengals biggest plays came off bubble screens and such. Dalton is a chucker. He chucks the ball up to his giant targets and let's them make catches in their 7' wingspan radius. DA did the same thing with Braylon and Winslow. Granted Dalton has been more consistent. Even that consistency has gaps. Last night was classic.

In hindsight it doesn't seem as bad but I remember having the same reaction as Lisa Salters at the time.

I went back and listened to Watt again and listened to Dalton.

Watt's comment really was nothing to make a big deal about. Not sure why it made my ears perk at the time.

Dalton is really unimpressive as a speaker. Comes across as not very intelligent.

Now, now Andy play nice before we threaten to count to three and make you stand in a corner for 10 seconds. Also please don't keep crying because you have not received your participation trophy from last year yet.
