What ever credibility you had just flew out the window. smile Pretty sure that was his point.. he said employers "would" pass them by.. knowing the stigma associated with the name, people don't use it, which is why there isn't anyone named Adolf... Why would you subject your kids to that kind of a disadvantage? So if you know that names are an issue and you name your kid Le-a and pronounce it "le-dash-a".. or you name your kid Ashaboushawntae..... then congrats, you are making a statement and making your kids fight an up hill battle for respect...

What you say is very true..Named my first son Emery..while not outrages he caught alot of crap about it. He then started going by Tyler his middle name.
My second son is named Daniel..in part from the bible but also i saw the crap my oldest boy got and didn't want to do that to my other child.
I didnt like to conform to a more traditional name but I kind of felt like a had as responsibility to my second son to do so..

I think I'll name my next kid, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, after a Welsh village. It's simple, easy to pronounce, and the chances he'll win spelling bees will increase exponentially.

I like how a baby needs to be named after Hitler to be comparable to any African name. Kinda tells you all you need to know. Try human nature. If people don't like a name, they don't like it. Is a rose by any other name just as sweet? These are honestly pointless features of a human being as they don't really point to anything. It's stupid to use them as a gauge for anything. What you are trying to say does not equate with reality. When a child is given an odd name that does not conform with what is seen as typical, you have chosen to set up a boundary. A boundary that child must overcome. Then after you do that, you wish for society to overlook and accept that boundary that you yourself set up. It's obvious to see that. Now is society right for judging applications and such based upon a name? No it's not. But humans are what they are. You can hope that people will not be that way. Yet, to expect it is neither practical or wise.

I don't recall you calling me xenophobic or crying about it. That's either because I really don't pay you any mind, or that I find you ridiculous. It doesn't matter if those are 'pointless features' of a human being, that is how people are. A name can tell me a lot about a person. They give hints to ethnicity, possible backround, and maybe even family. If someone is named Hilton Winsknob III, you expect him to be from an English backround with a long family history. If someone is named Gunther Appleschnatz, you expect a German who's family has recently moved to this country. Dikembe Mutombo is probably from some country in Africa. Granted, I have no idea if I am correct or not, as the first two might be black and the third white, and all of them originate from different countries that I supposed, but that is usually the exception. Right or wrong doesn't matter, it's still human nature. Now, if these were applicants applying for a job at my company, I would be more likely to go with the German, as that is my history. I would still read through their resumes, as Dikembe might be the best qualified and capable applicant. With current travel around the world, the status quo does not always apply. One of my favorite instances was a black guy I worked with who was born in England and immigrated to the US. He hated that people thought he should check the African American box because he was British.

In theory, you are correct... in the same sense that ear gauges are just jewelry, like a watch... and a shirt is just cotton, whether it's a pinpoint oxford or has a bloody marilyn manson picture on it.. None of them tell you a single thing about the character of the person behind it... but in the end, hiring decisions have to be made... especially when you are talking about entry level positions, and even more especially when you are talking about professional positions where client interaction is required... the whole package matters and decisions are based on a lot of things... I've got 30 resumes on my desk and I have to figure out which 4 to interview, the qualifications are all roughly the same... how do I make that decision?

I've got 30 resumes on my desk and I have to figure out which 4 to interview, the qualifications are all roughly the same... how do I make that decision? As I said yesterday, after qualifications and experience are established, you then have to pick who will fit in best with your other employees.

Like let's say that you're right and that people who have black names like Lakisha or Jamal or whatever are less likely to get called back or get an interview. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but for argument's sake let's just say that for it is-- that a decent amount of employers are less likely to give them a job. This should mean that there would be a glut of overqualified blacks (or other ethnic minorities with uncommon names) on the market. A simple hiring strategy in this situation would be to heavily favor hiring blacks, and assuming they are equally capable on average and other companies are less likely to hire them, the companies that do lean toward hiring them will have a massive advantage in the way of getting skilled labor for less money, or better labor for the same money. Surely I am not the first person to think of this. Am I completely off-base somewhere?

As I said yesterday, after qualifications and experience are established, you then have to pick who will fit in best with your other employees. And how will they be received by your clients.. doesn't matter how great I think they are, the clients have to like working with them.. and that's a judgement I have to make... and I will err on the side of caution with that.

Man you are right about that..My best friend in the world and business partner has a very black name..straight from Africa black.
For OPSEC reasons I'm not saying the name..but We had a chance for a giant opportunity to get in on an investment opportunity with a MAJOR supplement company.
We met with the owner thought everything was great..The owner flies just me back out to their company and said he wanted to do business with me but not my friend.
He said he didnt trust him and didnt like the way looked.
I walked away from a crap load of money over that one..I couild not believe what I had heard a professional man say.
Funny thing my partner is twice the business man I could ever be and got me started into a different way of life.
I told him what happened and to my surprise he looks me dead in the face and said don't worry about it we will figure out something else..I was nervous about how much I left on the table.
But man has it come back almost 10 fold and I don't have 1 regret walking away.
This is not a coach B post its a crazy thing that happened in my long and crazy lucky life.
