Apologies aren't needed. What's needed is honest discourse, acknowledgement of past wrongs, and shaking up our status quo of institutionalized racism.

While I agree it shouldnt happen it does on all sides, white, black, Mexican..I've heard my wife's boss which is black she is going to hire more blacks because its not dark enough.
How many restaurants do you go to where its all mexican workers..all Indian or chinese workers.
Is that ok or do those places need to be diversified?

i already stated what my intentions were.
if you chose to ignore that, then i dunno what else to say. Nah, that's fine. I get it, you say what you say because that's how you feel and that's the way it's gonna be and no one can stop you. Got it. But if people reply to you, don't get upset. Seriously swish, going through life with a chip on your shoulder is one thing. Making everything about that chip on your shoulder is a different thing. And it doesn't help. Just as you state your opinion, I, also, will continue to state my opinion. It's called discussion, right?

well, since you've been paying oh so close attention to all my post, with my whining and all, then you also must remember my post where i said that affirmative action might not be needed today.
there's no double standard here.discrimination is discrimination. i also believe people should be hired based off performance and experience, not skin tone.
do you remember that post? or do you have tunnel vision?
for MY perspective, diversity is only needed with regards to whatever industry you're in.
for example, if i'm promoting for a country concert, Am i going to recruit some trap lord from atlanta on my street team? probably not. but if i'm a fortune 500 company or a record company, and i want to bring into a specific industry...say hip hop. no offense, but if i'm white, i'm not gonna get a white guy to scout. i'm going to get a black dude with a beat on the streets to scout talent in the clubs.
but as far as normal jobs, i simply want crap like name based discrimination gone.
is that too much to ask?
personally, i wish we didn't mark a race on applications period.

This is from the New York Time article you linked: African-American names became symbols of resistance. They resist uniformity and West European influence, and therefore the limiting cultural framework of how one should present his or herself. When minority individuals are prejudged on the basis of their names, it is because those names do not conform. And in order for diverse identities to be reclaimed as such, we must appreciate the ideology behind unique names and root out the stigmas about them. So, black people pick names they know are non-conformist to show their resistance to society as it is, then they get surprised if people won't hire them due to non-conformity. Companies hire on certain criteria. They want someone with the knowledge and experience to fit their position, and then they want to make sure the potential hire will be a team player and get along with others. What this is telling me that Larry, George, and John will be hired a lot easier than Jaquan, even if all are black. That is not a race issue. Is there a study showing a black owned company with a boss name Jaquan is more apt to hire D'quan over Larry or Mike, if all are black?

i read it when i saw the link. i dunno if thats the main reason, or if a lot of people don't realize that a lot of these names are european, middle eastern, or typical african names.
and thats a case a lot. it's not standard US names.
My daughters names are Deniza and Ameliyah. Deniza isn't a US name. but how am i not conforming?
and then on top of that, so basically the children need to suffer in order for companies to make a statement to their parents?

From my experience it's not always the name, unless its one from how do you know they are on welfare??.."insert that name here"
Where a lot of people need to learn is how to talk and present themselves in a manner that said company is looking for.
Your first child's name I would've guessed black or some white trying to get cute with the name..second one sounds muslim..I fully admit I could be wrong...just would've been my guess

They hire based on experience, education, and how they believe someone will fit in with the company. No one wants to hire a PITA. I don't think it's racism. As for your daughter's names, I don't see either of them being a problem, depending on the type of job they are after. I would expect Deniza to be more serious and Ameliyah to be more happy go lucky. So, a technical position hiring agent would more likely go after Deniza than Ameliya, depending on resume of course.

and then on top of that, so basically the children need to suffer in order for companies to make a statement to their parents? Let's be honest here Swish. Many names have nothing to do with anything other than trying to stand out and be non conformist. It's done purposefully. Just like the double standard of the N word. Like a certain race has special privileges to say something nobody else can say. That's not tying to fit into American life, it's trying to kick sand into the face of others. Then you turn around and expect everyone to accept it. Sheniqua? Seriously? that doesn't even pass spell check! For the most part I understand your view about the double standards of our justice system and I agree with that. But you can't just put up a wall to slam society then tell everyone to deal with it. If people want to fit into society and have society accept them, they should at least show they want to fit into society. If the black community understands that such awkward sounding names cause societal problems, why use them and then cry foul?

i understand that. but lets be clear here, Deniza doesn't pass spell check, either. is that a ghetto name or not? horrible example.
i understand your point of view, but it seems like you're mad at the reaction and effect, but for some reason, not at the cause.
and thats where the disconnect comes from with regards to me and some of you guys here on the board.
it's like the game. the guy who caused the fight isn't getting flagged, the guy who reacted gets the flag and possible ejection. both are wrong, but it seems like the guy who defended himself gets the worse of punishments.
and you see it everyday in our society.

It's like the name Adolph. It was a very popular name in German speaking countries before WWII, as well as popular in France and Italy, although with different spellings. Most employers would pass by an applicant named Adolph, no matter their color.

and thats where the disconnect comes from with regards to me and some of you guys here on the board. Oh, I'm certainly not mad. I thought you knew me better than that by now. lol And there is most certainly a cause. I'm quite aware of that. I understand the reasoning and the injustice that exists within our society. Point being, if you in turn name your child Shaniqua, you're only using your logic to harm your own child in American society. That's not accomplishing anythng. it's like the game. the guy who caused the fight isn't getting flagged, the guy who reacted gets the flag and possible ejection. both are wrong, but it seems like the guy who defended himself gets the worse of punishments. You could see it that way. But I believe to see it that way one would have to ignore all of the great strides the black community has made. Sure there are still great inequities remaining, yet with the overturning of Jim Crow laws, the civil rights movement and affirmative action, many great advancements have also been achieved. So while there are still a lot of improvements t be made, it's not as if times have stood still since the 50's. and you see it everyday in our society. I see a lot every day in or society. Part of which is both sides putting up walls that make fixing those issues even harder than they were.

and then on top of that, so basically the children need to suffer in order for companies to make a statement to their parents? Nobody is making a statement to the parents. Business exists to make money, Most businesses are not interested in taking risks or pushing social boundaries, unless they think there is a profit at the end. So, especially in the sense of professional client-driven positions, employers are going to hire folks that their clients can relate to... If I'm buying medical supplies and I've got 3 business cards of people and they are Heather, Thomas, and Sha'Quonde... and I don't know any of them, I'm least likely to call Sha'Quonde... and businesses know that.

He was born in the US but his father was from Austria. The name was very popular pre-WWII but his dad named him after his father, not Hitler. He said in the beginning Hitler did some great things for Europe building roads and hospitals and such though.
