Strange. It's been the bullets doing this lately, I can't see anything that would cause it in this article.

Ok, here's my try at posting the article:
Single Ohio mom wins $1 million in lottery Woman working at Ohio gas station finds $10 bill and buys winning ticket
NORTH CANTON, Ohio - Kristina Schneider tried to persuade a customer at the BP station where she works to buy the last ticket on a roll of the Magnificent Millions lottery game.
“I always joke that the last ticket is the winning one, but he said he only had enough money for three tickets,” Schneider said.
This time, her advice was no joke.
The single mother — with nine maxed out credit cards and $8,500 in debt for her associate’s degree — bought what turned out to a $1 million winning ticket with a $10 bill she found in the store Friday.
“I thought someone was playing a trick on me” when she found the sawbuck, she said.
After showing a customer that she did indeed have a winning ticket, she locked the store while she took a moment to be sick in the bathroom.
“I was numb. I still am,” she said.
Schneider, 32, opted to take 20 yearly payments of $50,000, or $34,500 after taxes.
“If I’d have taken a lump sum, I’d be broke again within five years,” she said.

Good for her . Nice to see someone who isn't 95 years old win something like this. It will hopefully help her out to do what she really wants to do....unless what she really wants to do is work at a BP Station .

Should have taken the lump sum, put 300 or 400 grand in investments and the rest in a money market to pay off your debt.
Then she would be set when she wants to retire.

If she won a million and took it lump sum, she would only have the 300-400 grand.. there wouldn't be a "take the rest and....."

I think you might be wrong there, dc. Isn't the highest tax bracket about 40%? Maybe I'm wrong........

I saw on the news last week, a guy had a ticket which looked like a winner(the numbers matched according to the rules) When he went to cash it in, they said it was a misprint on the ticket.

That's why I said 300-400, changes are she would get at least 400, probably closer to 450. Put 300 in investments, use 100-150 to pay off your debt.
Don't fight the numbers DC, they don't like that,

This must be the story I referred to in OSU's thread. I would take the lump sum, I think....although Ballpeen says you can will the remaining payments.

She's getting 34,500 for 20 years, assume she is in here early to mid 40's at most.
So 34,500 til about when she is ready to retire. doubtful she put this money away to invest, if that was the strategy, she would realize it's better to earn interest on the lump sum for 20 years, then small increments over 20 years.
Where as in 20 years that 300k at 8%(conservative investment) she would have approx 1.4 mil, plus that other 100k+ that she took as cash to pay off her debts.
Heck 300k at 8% is earning 24k that first year.by year 6 she is passing her 20 payment option in interest alone.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Exactly. They say it's usually better to take the lump sum and I can't find much that supports otherwise.

The only thing that supports otherwise is people feeling like they couldn't control it... there is no mathematical or financial reason to take the annuity pay out... the ONLY reason would be if a person recognized that they didn't have the self-control and would blow it or lose it or somehow get in trouble with all of that money at one time...
