First car when I was 16 was a pale yellow '62 VW Bug. Paid $300 to private owner. Total POS; the engine blew up after a month. I think I got it up to 53 MPH once. After the VW, I bought a red '68 Ford Fairlane for $1900. Really fast 302 engine. I once got from our house on the westside of Cleveland to a class at BW in Berea in like 12 minutes. Topped 100 MPH most of the way on the freeway. Loved that car, girls seemed to like it too. (BTW, the pics are just what they looked like, not actual photos.)

My first thought was does your your wife really call you FBHO71? LOL Just kidding.. I and a lot of my friends are upside down in our sports cars. I have a lotta money tied up in a car that if I tried to sell it, I'd be lucky to get 1/4 of what I have in it. But I do love that car., Lots of fun to drive, fast but not overly. Certainly not my first car however

1972 Gran Torino Sport-My stepmother gave it to me when she got a new car. Had a 351 Cleveland in it.
Did 105mph with 105k on it with a two barrel!
Here's a question to add to the topic: What's the fastest you've gotten your vehicle to go with you behind the wheel?
First car ended up in the junk yard after changing a few hands so I bought another one whilst in the service.
Had to rebuild the engine so this Torino had a 302 in it.
Got that puppy up to 111mph with a two barrel! Are you going to leave that Gran Torino to Thao "On the condition that you don't chop-top the roof like one of those beaners, don't paint any idiotic flames on it like some white trash hillbilly, and don't put a big, gay spoiler on the rear end like you see on all the other zipperheads' cars. It just looks like hell. If you can refrain from doing any of that... it's yours. " If I still had it those would certainly be the conditions! Well done sir! Well done!

My second was '64 TBird soft top with 390,fully loaded miss that car. At time my dad had '64 TBird Landau fully loaded with 390. Got about 19/20 city mpg 25/29hwy mpg at 27cent/gal regular 33cents hi test. Only problem was the top cycling system. After so many uses or bumps in road it would not cycle completely would have to disconnect feed to switch then would work fine for time. Figured out problem when purchasing next car that relay system contact points in trunk stacked instead of horizontal. Purchased in '69 and owned for 5 1/2 years.
I bleed Seal Brown,Burnt Oranage and White w/Chrome. It's a proud honored birthright and family tradition.

Yes great car! When I had the '65, my Dad bought a "69 4 door with a 426? I think it was a 426 V8, maybe 429? Fast Fast Fast car! I also bought myself an '87 T-Bird brand new. Nice ride and lasted almost 15 years, taught my kids to drive in that one.

My first real girlfriends brother had that car..and I would make a road trip and sometimes cruise the strip in Norwalk with him..it drew attention and was pretty damn fast once the tires took hold.
His lady friend was from there and my girlfriend and I would go to visit there with him.

Read on yahoo a while back that the ones made in the last decade are going to leap over $1m when the '16s come out.

I had a VW Rabbit that was absolutely garbage. I bought the car thinking that it would be a good car, and it blew up within a week.

Hey columbusdawg, what's the story on that Shelby? Probably a kit car..would be my guess..I could be wrong. Yeah, it is a Factory 5 roadster - basically a 2200# Mustang drivetrain on a 4" tubular frame. It's got a 306 small block Ford with Vortech supercharger pushing about 9lbs of boost. Makes around 475hp at the tires. Pretty fun car. In the Mustang I've got a 331 small block Ford with a turbo charger pushing around 15lbs of boost. That one makes around 900hp at the tires. Really fun car if you don't want to turn.

The GT is an amazing car - not sure if you are referencing the original, 2005, or 2016. Had a friend that had an 05, the 16 is amazing looking. [video:youtube] http://youtu.be/wC8IX1AqS1s[/video]

If I could swing it I'd prefer the '05 but they're gonna shoot up out of my range rather quickly once the '16 comes out. Might just have to get one of the Superformance GT's. You can still fit a 427 into one of those things!

Ok humor it was..that was funny...sure it was cheaper? or was it because gas was cheap when you drove it??
Kidding..kind of..like to know the answer to the gas question actually.

I believe so..my oldest boy took the immediate family on a chartered boat that went to all of the islands..gave you time to eat shop ect..
I was so upset with my youngest that i just stayed on my phone posting here at least till there was something that caught my eye or the wife just flat out gave me the LOOK.
I highly recommend doing this boat, island hopping ordeal which I'm guessing if you lived here you probably did it..It is truly beautiful here but I don't see how people want to live here. It was my first visit and cant believe what is a 15 min drive when there is no traffic..can turn into 2 and half hour drive/wait in traffic:/ I may have exaggerated a touch but not much.
My oldest has been here for 4yrs..him and his wife are both in intel and bought a home here..They just got the orders to go to Fort Carson..and are selling or have it sold..I don't remember what he said exactly because I was paying more attention to my first grandchild.

And sorry I'm posting from my phone trying to pay attention to my surroundings/family talking and I could have misspoke/typed a word..which I understand can drastically change the meaning of a sentence.
Plus the 5hour difference in time from Ohio to here i didnt think would bother me..has got me in a zombie land and I need sleep.

My first car was a 61 Falcon, if I wasn't going downhill I could make 50mph. 2nd was a 65 Mustang convertible. 3rd was a 66 Chevy ss. Fourth was a 77 Ford pickup, and I have been driving trucks since 1979.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

'61 Falcon The first car I actually remember riding in as a kid. One of the first true modern compact cars. And a helluvalot safer than the Corvair. Ours was a burgundy 2-door Futura. It was the first new car My Pops ever owned. He was so proud of that car. He had a 'pat line' he'd use to everyone who commented on his little whip: "It's my starter T-Bird. Someday, I'll have the real thing." That car started the tradition: he'd hand wash it every Saturday afternoon, weather/season permitting. I was 5 when he bought it. My job was to hose-rinse it as he washed. Later, I got expanded duties, including detailing the interior. It was one of those Father/Son things that bind a young man to His Pops. Years later, I'd 'stopped out' of college, and was temporarily hunkering down at home, while I was getting my feet wet at my new SOHIO refinery job. One afternoon in late May, I came home after my 1st shift gig at the Coke Drums was over. There in the driveway, was a brand-new 1979 Ford Thunderbird. You Dawgs remember these- the most 'unfortunate' styling era in the history of T-Birds: the 80-ft long "coupe" (DAMN... those longazz doors were heavy to swing open...) with the hood that was perfectly-sized to host a game of tennis? GAD, what an ugly car! Pops had taken a half-day off just to take possession of the car at Timmerman Ford when it was delivered to the dealership. Another 'first' for him... and I was there, on the day it happened. Custom order. In-dash cassette deck. Upgraded sound package. Upgraded engine package. Custom-order color scheme: Beige body. Burgundy (textured pleather) Landau roof. When I rolled up in my British racing green '77 Spit, he was standing next to the car. With a bucket of suds. And a garden hose. I got out of my car and waved to him. He grinned back.... and picked up the hose, extending it to me as I walked up the drive. Water was sploshing all over the blacktop.... a big "no-no," where this 'Depression-Era Child' was concerned. But this.... this was a 'special occasion.' Rules be damned, yo. I didn't say a word. I just started watering that car down- roof to tires. Just like he'd trained me when I was 13... and tall enough to take on new responsibilities. Pops started swirling that chamois... top-to-bottom, just like we'd done hundreds of times before. We washed that brand-new car without saying a word at all between us. It took 2 hours to wash and wax that land yacht. When the last bit of Kit wax was polished off the front bumper, this went down: "Now it looks right." "Damn straight. Shop Boys missed spots- because the car isn't in their driveway." "Damn. A T-Bird." "Yup. Told you I'd get one." "You happy with it?" "It's a T-Bird. What do you think?" "Trade it for a '61?" "In a heartbeat." "You pick the colors?" "Yup." (Pops was a lot of things... 'style savvy' wasn't one of them'... ) "...the Burgundy roof is for the Falcon." I totally got it. That car was a hideous eye-bleeder, but it made My Pops proud and happy as hell. And that's why, even after years of indoctrination/education in The High Arts, that monstrosity of mechanics was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen. Pops made exactly 3 payments on that car before he died of a massive heart attack on the racquetball courts at our local YMCA. Seniors Semi-Finals. When My Momz was asked to choose the color scheme for his casket, she reversed the colors of his beloved Thunderbird. Burgundy... with beige accents. Custom-ordered. Dick Siferd made it happen. In record time. Because THAT'S how we do it- in "small-town America." Years later (when the shock & pain of his unexpected passing had been dulled by time), I asked her about that color choice. This amazing woman who had introduced me to the music of Beethoven and Bach, had taken me on 'Mother/Son' field trips to the Toledo Museum of Art, and introduced me to works by Flemish masters, world-class sculptors, cutting-edge glass artists, and my first exposure to Monet's 'Water Lilies', said only this: "I wanted him to enjoy his last ride." _____________________ Thanks so much for this trip down Memory Lane. What a GREAT thread this is. I'm so glad I checked in here. Man.... I'd love to have one of those '61 Falcons- just for the noststalgia factor alone. But it's gotta be in Burgundy.
