Browns QB Josh McCown out for season with broken collarbone

CLEVELAND -- Browns quarterback Josh McCown will miss the rest of the season after fracturing his collarbone in the 33-27 loss to Baltimore Monday night.

Coach Mike Pettine would not discuss whether Austin Davis or Johnny Manziel will start Sunday against Cincinnati. He steadfastly refused to comment on the quarterbacks.

"I don't want to head down this slope," he said. "I'm going to reserve talk for the quarterback stuff until (Wednesday)."

Pettine said he will decide who starts without interference or influence from the front office.
Josh McCown completed 186-of-292 passes for 2,109 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions in eight games this season. Ken Blaze/USA TODAY Sports

Manziel was third-team quarterback against the Ravens because he had been disciplined for his decisions during the bye week, and because he lied to the coaching staff about a video that appeared of him partying in Austin, Texas.

When the move was made to take Manziel from starter to third team, the indications were that would be the way the Browns would approach the rest of the season. Within a couple days, though, Pettine and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said they could envision Manziel playing again for the Browns this season.

Davis was the backup and nearly guided the Browns to a win over Baltimore after replacing McCown in the fourth quarter. Davis threw a 42-yard touchdown pass and had the Browns in position try a game-winning 51-yard field goal. The kick, though, was blocked, and the Ravens returned it for a touchdown on the last play of the game.

"You're poised for thrill of victory and then you're tasting agony of defeat all within a span of 10 to 15 seconds," Pettine said. "I can't imagine too many game-ending scenarios that would make you feel worse at the end than that."

Pettine said he would "take everything into consideration" when deciding which quarterback starts.

"Make the decision for this week that's best for the team," he said.

McCown's fracture will not need surgery. He played well for the Browns, but struggled with concussion, rib and now the collarbone injury during the season.

"I cannot say enough positive things about Josh McCown, what he's done for this football team and what he means to this football team," Pettine said.

In eight games, McCown completed 186-of-292 passes for 2,109 yards, with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. His final rating was 93.3.

Let the speculation begin.

I say start JFF, see how he plays and then we'll have a better idea of what we have.

people been saying it, our QB play hasn't been the issue.

it's that monstrosity we call a defense.

Finishes the season 12-4 TD/INT Can't be mad about that. He played well, while the defense completely died.

The Browns need to get a look at Austin Davis to see where he fits in...Pettine should let the punishment stand and give Manziel a promotion to backup QB.

McCown was allowed to reenter the fame with a broken collarbone. This is the second time the team left him in when it was obvious he was injured.

Thats an impressive stat line.

I predicted we would win four games. I did so because McCown was going to be our QB. He played waaaaaaaaaaaay better than I expected. What I didn't anticipate was the rest of the team regressing in every way imaginable.

At no point during the season was he the problem, despite all of the whining and complaining about him - which was usually directly derived from people being upset that Manziel wasn't getting played.

I'd have to go look it up, but that QB Rating has to rank as one of the top ratings by a Browns QB since The Return.

If the defense had shown up this season, and if we could run the ball, this team could have gone quite far with McCown.

Sorry for McCown, he played his heart out and I hope he sticks around next year for depth.

In related news: Pettine not sure on starter and says they will talk about it and decide. REALLY???? Can't wait for this train wreck to end.

Because Pettine lets the Veterans make the calls on this team or at least he needs their permission before he makes one.

My heart goes out to Josh. If the Team played like Josh did, we'd be champions. To bad Pet didn't care enough to keep him from himself. And everybody thought the Shanahans destroyed RG III and how bad that was, Pet is just as much to blame as they are. Let him play when his ribs were hurt, let him play when he was getting killed last night, thats enough right there for Haslam to give him his walking papers. I think Pet is doing everything he can to be fired, how else can you justify coaching the way he's been going? He's not helping O'neil at all and they have had weeks and weeks to sit down and figure out how to stop the run and rush the passer, but nothing changes on the D. Even the players don't know what their doing. Pets had enough and it looks like he's gone.

First of all, I am going to admit that I was wrong about McCown and that some of you.........especially tab--------were right. The guy played much, much better than I ever expected. I was wrong. You guys were right.

Now.........to some quotes:

Quote:
"I don't want to head down this slope," he said. "I'm going to reserve talk for the quarterback stuff until (Wednesday)."

Quote:
Pettine said he will decide who starts without interference or influence from the front office.

Quote:
"You're poised for thrill of victory and then you're tasting agony of defeat all within a span of 10 to 15 seconds," Pettine said. "I can't imagine too many game-ending scenarios that would make you feel worse at the end than that."

Quote:

Davis threw a 42-yard touchdown pass and had the Browns in position try a game-winning 51-yard field goal. The kick, though, was blocked, and the Ravens returned it for a touchdown on the last play of the game.

Recently, I have tried to defend Pet because so many were on his case, but the man is an arrogant fool.

--Why can't you talk about it, Pet? Is it too personal for you? It sure seems that way. You're old school and I respect that, but one needs to have an open mind and realize it's not really about you.........it's about the team.

--Without interference or influence from the front office. That sounds confrontational and a statement that screams of you are going to "draw a line in the sand." Yet, you and Farmer told us that you were all on the same page and there was no dysfunction. Were you lying, Pet? If so, should you also be demoted? And if not, your statement sure gives credence to the claim that you do not like Manziel. You have already allowed your pride to cost you one victory, so what is more important to you: wins or your need to feel that your decisions are correct?

--You were poised for the thrill of victory? LOL.......you are a fool. You inserted Davis into the lineup because of some stupid, arrogant position that you took. The clock was mismanaged. All kinds of time ticked away because the play could not be called quickly enough. Then, Davis slides in bounds instead of running out of bounds and stopping the clock. A timeout was called. You then run a dive up the middle to burn your last timeout. You put your kicker in a unfavorable situation. The kick was low. It was blocked. That is on you and no one else. You allowed your pride to cost your "TEAM" a win. That is shameful for a head coach and you should be fired for that alone. In fact, as a former coach.......your actions sicken me. I have seen coaches like you. It's more about you than the team. It's more about you being right than winning games. You have allowed your personal feelings to interfere what is best for the team and there is no excusing that!!!!

--The author acts like Davis almost led us to a win and I suppose that is true, but his blunders w/clock management also cost us a better opportunity to win the game. I don't blame the kid, though............he was obviously ill-prepared for the end of the game situation. And why wouldn't he be? He has been 3rd string all year and suddenly he is thrust into the spotlight of prime time football w/a chance to win the game by a coach who cares more about his personal feelings than what is best for the team. The truth is that Davis wasted all kinds of time in the huddle and he slid in bounds which made us take a timeout and that led to us having a longer FG attempt, which is naturally going to have a lower trajectory, and therefore increases the odds of a block. I don't blame poor Austin Davis. I blame Mike Pettine and his stubborn, arrogant ass.

I am not going to defend you anymore. You blew it because you put your own personal feelings above the well-being of the team and as a former coach..........that son, is inexcusable!

Pettine has never put the team first. He has always put Pettine first.

If he had put the team first, we'd have more than 2 wins in the last 16.

This isn't rocket science. It's a silly game called football.

He does absolutely zero about the stupidity of his coordinators. He does absolutely zero about putting guys in the best position to succeed. He does absolutely zero to get the most out of guys. It is up to each individual player to get the most out of themselves and to prove themselves to emperor Pettine. There is no "coaching" going on. If you can be a choir boy, you score major points with Pettine. I'm still laughing at his "Davis is relentless in the film room" comment. Relentless in the film room? LOL. And now I'm reading reports again that the FO wants Manziel to start and Pettine doesn't necessarily agree.

It is a hot steaming mess, and with every week that passes, it becomes more clear to me that Pettine is the biggest problem with this team.

McCown is out and today we find out who starts against the Bengals...I believe Pettine turns to Manziel, telling him he would be riding the pine if it were not for McCown's injury.

Bitter sweet for Pettine, but he gives Haslam what he wants...Johnny Football.

I think Pet's biggest problem is that he is extremely stubborn. I also don't think he is the sharpest tool in the shed. Add in his stubborn nature and you have a huge problem.

I do have to say that Farmer is still our biggest problem, though. His handling of the roster is almost hard to comprehend. It's like you couldn't possibly do any worse. Yet, somehow he has managed it.

This team is a complete mess.

It's interesting how there are so many fans who think quarterback wasn't an issue and yet there are also many more who think the Browns should draft a QB with their first pick... which is it?

LOL...........good point.

But, I don't know if there really are so many fans out there that think the qb is not the problem. Look at this thread, there are not many replies.

I replied, but on the other hand.......I am NOT one of those who think we should take a qb w/the first pick.

IMO it would be crazy to draft another QB this year. We need WRs, OL, DL, rushers, run stuffers, a true 3 down RB, a real FB, and CBs. I will slit my wrist if I have to watch Bademosi start at CB again next year!

We have 3 serviceable QBs on the roster right now. We are eons away from being a playoff team. And our entire roster needs an overhaul.

AND the really sad part is that we have no idea how bad our players really are because our coaching sucks so much!

Q The Browns weakest area is defense...not QB.

I trade down and accumulate picks. I also look at the present roster and trade those who do not fit in.

Fix the defense should betheBrowns first priority

Frankly, I don't think it matters which position we pick as long as Farmer is still doing the drafting. And I am not sure how good anyone can be w/Pet as the head coach.

and that's what i've been saying over and over on this board.

we complain about Farmer's draft, which i agree.

but player development? how can we be THIS bad with the players? what if our coaches simply have no idea what they're doing?

At least Braylon showed a great year. so did Winslow. Even weeden and T Rich showed some sort of promise.

but these last 4 guys are showing absolutely nothing. how can that even be possible?

Sometimes you don't lose because of your QB but to be a champion and get in the champion mix you need a very good QB. There is a difference.

QB wasn't the issue the defense was.
If OK is our goal then don't pick a Franchise QB with the first pick. Which is it? is not the choice. Bridge QB who do their job. Or a Franchise QB who can carry this team on his back that is the Which IS IT that we covet. One does not have anything to do with the other.

Case in point. Big Ben - Their team almost stinks as much as our I think...he is able to carry that team on his back and garnish them wins.

Brady his team is not a championship caliber team and yet Brady puts them on his back and carries them.

This season or us QB was not the issue in us being unable to win. Just not GREAT to win games we have lost. Why we will use a Early pick first time since 1999 on a QB...the rest were at #22.

Lets get those Pots n Pans for the COOK!

You guys are all to much. Let's see Mangini couldn't turn it around in two year; Shurm and Holmgren couldn't; Chud couldn't do it in 1 with an experience OC and DC; Pettine and Farmer can't do it in two.

How many times have many of you preached this team lacks talent. We know there isn't a grocery story to go buy talent. Everyone knows, at least I think most of you know, you are lucky to get 3 players with starter quality in the draft.

It is one of three things: a. Browns need receivers, because that is what many here suggested and all the draft experts state Browns will draft each year. b. draft anything that moves seeing what sticks. Why? We lack talent across the board. c. coaches who can take a team with limited talent and make it playoff contenders. "a" cracks me up!!!

It is even more laughable thinking Gruden or Cowler will come since they already stated three times "no!" The best option we have is to get whole new FO and coaches to see what if they can pull a rabbit of an hat building a winning team in two years. Yep, that's the ticket since Browns have tried that option a dozen times.

To think, teams like Atlanta, who seemed to be duplicating what Browns did last year with their soft schedule, isn't winning. They actually had more talent then the Browns. Fisher, an experience coach, spent 4 years attempting to turn Rams into a winning franchise having no talent.
