... maybe they feel tough love is the only way Johnny will survive when dealing with his personal demons and ultimately survive in football. Bingo, Rish'. There is no vindictiveness on Pettine's part. What is best for Manziel, is what is best for the team (if he stays next season), and ultimately best for Pettine's continued employment...

Okay, thanks. I recall seeing him play, but I really don't remember anything about him.
I just wonder why the Rams cut him when their other qbs are so putrid?

I can't imagine any NFL team in this position taking this type of route. That's because no other team "plays like a Brown"

Yes, sir. I'm also not sure why they cut him. Maybe he turns out to be awful and I'm simply way off with what I think he could be.

I just wonder why the Rams cut him when their other qbs are so putrid? Untimely turnovers among other things; there was a fair amount posted on Davis at ClanRam from when he was starting there if you're interested in doing some research/reading.

the only problem, which some posters have brought up, is that, well, the league hasn't actually ever did anything to manziel.
I don't how I feel about this - and I won't second guess whether this is a strong message to JM to shape up and intended to be a stronger wake up call than he's ever had before - whether the team is moving on - whatever .... Maybe they see as much potential in Davis as they do JM? . . . guess we'll find out some. I do know that there was as much or more scathing remarks about the signing of McCown ... and he was much better than expected, maybe the same will be true? Swish - with regard to the NFL not having taken action with JM ... what does that have to do with what action can and can't be handed out by the team? What relevance does it have to whether the actions are warranted or not? The NFL doesn't care if JM is late for meetings. Or if he knows the playbook. NFL doesn't care if JM promises certain actions to the team and then breaks his word. NFL doesn't care if JM lies to coaches and players. NFL doesn't care if JM has a destructive pattern of personal conduct that prevents him from making football the #1 priority in his life ..... but the Browns should and do. Spoken for truth. Does this help anyone in understanding?

I can't imagine any NFL team in this position taking this type of route.
You mean making the back-up quarterback the starter when the starter goes down? I wasn't aware that all the other teams automatically promoted the #3 over the #2 when the starter went down.
General reply to all: look, I get the anger/frustration on the board. I see it as a kid who gets a new toy (Manziel) and just about the time he gets it out of the box to play with, the parents take it way. This is as much about fans wanting what they want than it is any real belief in Manziel. The desire to "see what we have" or "have something to watch" is driving a lot of this anger.
What would reaction have been last year if Manziel had been the 3 and gotten promoted to starter when Hoyer went down - bypassing whomever the 2 might have been? I'll answer for you - outrage at the coaches/front office for bypassing the #2 and putting the #3 in.

This definitely has the feel of something personal. Without a doubt this is personal between Manziel and either just pettine or the coaching staff.. or both. Maybe the same with Farmer and Haslam for that matter. And it should be. Manziel is a boy. He's not close to being grown up enough to be called a man. My guess is that Haslam and Farmer are on board with this decision. What's really funny is if Haslam forced them to take Manziel as has been reported over and over again, he's gotta feel like a dope now. I'm not going to second guess Pet at this point, what good would that do.

Does that help your understanding of why we don't understand the move? Who you going to compare Manziel to?...the Browns don't have any other players who spent their offseason in rehab.
Listening to some opinions from ESPN, many said Manziel should be cut by the Browns for his most resent conduct.
It really is simple to figure out..Pet said Manziel was demoted to #3, behind Austin Davis and starter McCown...#1 goes down and Davis moves up to #1 and Manziel goes to #2.

j/c.... So now it appears the Browns may be flip flopping QBs on a weekly basis per Pettine... Nate Ulrich @NateUlrichABJ #Browns HC Mike Pettine said QB decision is a "weekly thing." It's Austin Davis for this week. I'm not going to go beyond that. Tweet Nate Ulrich @NateUlrichABJ #Browns HC Mike Pettine said he doesn't worry about possibly going back & forth between QBs b/c our players aren't strangers to it Tweet A master edition of incompetence is being written right before our very eyes. Browns coach Mike Pettine leaves door wide open for Johnny Manziel to start again this season By NATE ULRICH Published: December 2, 2015 Browns coach Mike Pettine made it clear the franchise hopes to see quarterbacks Austin Davis and Johnny Manziel play in the final five games of the season. The Browns announced Wednesday Davis would start Sunday at home against the Cincinnati Bengals, but Pettine wouldn't commit to a starter beyond this coming weekend. He explained the quarterback decision would be handled on a weekly basis moving forward. "I talked to the quarterbacks this morning and I said just kind of given where we are, what are circumstances are, that it's safe to say now that this is a weekly thing," Pettine said Wednesday during a news conference. "The decision was made. It's Austin for this week and [we're] not going to go beyond that." So Pettine left the door wide open for Manziel to return to the starting lineup this season after the 22nd overall pick in last year's draft was demoted from starter to third string last week because of his off-field behavior. Pettine even said "we'll re-visit this" when asked how the team would proceed if Davis plays well against the Bengals. "These are two players that we both want to see play is the bottom line," Pettine said. "I don’t want to declare, 'Hey, this is what it’s going to be here on out.' These are two young quarterbacks that have upside and we want to see what that upside is. So Austin’s the guy for this week." Davis will become the 24th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999. He relieved quarterback Josh McCown, who was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a broken collarbone, and made his first appearance with the Browns on Monday night in their 33-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Davis finished 7-of-10 passing for 77 yards and a touchdown with a rating of 125.8. His 42-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Travis Benjamin tied the score 27-27 with 1:47 left. He also helped the Browns move into position for Travis Coons’ 51-yard field-goal attempt, which was blocked by defensive end Brett Urban and returned 64 yards by safety Will Hill for the game-winning touchdown with no time left. Pettine said Davis' performance influenced the decision to give him the starting nod against the Bengals more than Manziel being stationed in the coaching staff's doghouse. "I don't want to get into [Manziel's] punishment and length of it," Pettine said. [I] felt, given the circumstances where we had placed [Manziel on the depth chart] and what we had done as a result of what had happened, that Austin was above him and went out and played well and he deserves this opportunity. To me, it's more about Austin and seeing what he can do than length of punishment." Manziel, 22, partied during a recent bye-week break, then lied to the Browns after a video showing him singing, dancing and holding a large bottle at a nightclub surfaced online. Manziel spent more than 10 weeks this past offseason in an inpatient rehabilitation facility specializing in alcohol and drug addiction treatment. Last week, McCown was named the starter, Davis the No. 2 and Manziel No. 3 as a result of his punishment. So Davis replaced McCown, 36, after he left the game with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter because of a season-ending fractured collarbone suffered when the veteran absorbed a shot from defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan with 2:20 left in the third quarter. Before being disciplined, the 22-year-old Manziel had the best game of his career Nov. 15 when he threw for 372 yards in a 30-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’s 1-4 as an NFL starter, including 1-2 this season. He has completed 59.4 percent of his passes this year with five touchdowns, two interceptions and a rating of 88.4. Davis, 26, signed with the Browns on Sept. 7 after going 3-5 in eight games as a starter for the St. Louis Rams last season while filling in for Sam Bradford. On Sept. 30, the Browns signed Davis to a two-year contract extension through 2017. In 10 appearances with the Rams last season, Davis completed 180-of-284 passes for 2,001 yards and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions. His rating was 85.1. Pettine touted Davis as a cerebral player. "He is as prepared as any quarterback that I've been around," Pettine said. "He's relentless in that way, so I think he goes into games with, in his mind, I think processing speed that he's rehearsed it so many times in his head that I think he gets the ball out and he's decisive, maybe quicker than some other guys. So, I think one, where we see the skill set is the intangible stuff. Two, I think the guys around him they respect him. They see how passionate he is. "Then from a physical standpoint, he's got some mobility when the pocket's clean for him and he can step. He's got some arm strength to him as well. He demonstrated that the other night, the corner route that he threw the other night to Travis and the touchdown both are good examples of his arm. He's young and hasn't had a ton of starts and what he's shown us on the practice field and the little bit that he got in the game has all been encouraging." Pettine conceded playing three quarterbacks in a season presents "less than ideal" circumstances for the coaching staff. He has repeatedly relied on offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell when making decisions about the position. "I'm not on an island when I make these decisions," Pettine said. "I make the final call, and I'll have strong opinions one way or another, but it either gets confirmed or denied by people that I trust, and that makes it easier. For us, it comes down to football decisions. I know once you get to the point in the year where we are now that there's some bigger-picture, down-the-road things that factor into it." Pettine isn't worried about how juggling quarterbacks in the final five games would affect the other players on the team. After all, they're accustomed to the team's instability at the game's most important position. "I don't because I don't think our guys are strangers to that," Pettine said. "If you look at last year, we ended up playing three [quarterbacks]. I know in recent history or not so recent history for a variety of circumstances that there's been different guys playing quarterback, that there hasn't been the continuity that we're all searching for at that position. "If you have a long-term answer, if you have continuity at that position, the offense can be built around the skill set and mentality if you have that presence. Everybody is looking at that position for leadership. That’s bedrock. You’re in much better shape. That’s the haves and the have nots. That’s what teams are looking for. We felt we had a good answer this year in Josh. Unfortunately, he’s had some injury issues. We have two young guys that are more than talented enough to play in this league." http://www.ohio.com/blogs/cleveland-brow...season-1.644794

jmho - punish JM one more game then announce him as the starter? Or because of the IR of McCown go to plan B and start him here on in as long as he doesn't go stupid on us again.
What I said when this was still WHO IS AUSTIN DAVIS thread.
Thought it was a real possibility then I'm not going to pee on Pettine now as nothing has changed except McCown officially went on IR. Was thinking 1 game too soon maybe. 2 should be enough. Unless Davis of course plays his butt off and we win...then you got to continue I guess???
Vers...Pettine presser before the game when asked stated that Davis was prepared if he needed to come in. Don't see why he would change that after the game so again no big surprise there.

He did not look prepared to handle the clock management at the end of the game.
That was beyond amateurish. My high school qbs had a better understanding of the clock than he did.
This entire thing is a joke and so is the team.

Clock management...I agree and have spoken on this just not often.
I thought the slide was well pretty Dumb. I thought the run up the middle was Stupid.
O thought the clock run off with 2 TO was dumb.
Most of all I think once in a possible position to WIN!!! We again play instead to NOT TO LOSE which usually guarantees us a LOSS. But I thought he was prepared as the #2 he came in and did an OK job like the #2 should. Thats all.

This just in, AD is / was the pseudo #2. He was promoted due to punishment. Touch ground. I'm talking about REAL team & player management here, not a temporary, short term power play. To be clear, when I say " I can't imagine any NFL team in this position taking this route", I'm suggesting that when you draft a QB #1, you owe it to the organization to see what you have( ON THE FIELD ). I can't believe this staff is allowed to compress this window of evaluation. Six games was cutting close, but four is possibly bordering on the side of premeditated failure. I've never been crazy about drafting JM, but this franchise absolutely needs to know what they have & their running out of time. I know they have already run out of credibility.

If this truly the motive behind starting Davis then I am OK with it I guess. If he truly wants to use the remaining games to evaluate the two QBs on the roster then so be it. I really don't care who the QB is next year Manziel, Davis or someone we get in the draft.

That stance has never held water for me, particularly in regards to the Browns franchise. It's easy to pass off as a way of somehow rationalising a decision be it front office or on the field but it's disingenuous. The rationale would mean that NFL employees are infallible and the rumblings of message board posters are muppets and that just is not the case. If it were, nobody would ever get fired for basically being rubbish at their job. I'll tell you this dude, when it comes to the roster and the draft, there are message board posters who have done mocks consistently for years that have been light years better than anything our front office has done, and I'd take a 2016 draft from Django, Attack, CleveSteve over anything that Farmer can concoct because they've earned it but hey, Farmer works in the NFL, and they are just posting on message boards.

Multi Superbowl or multi championship winning Head Coaches..
You can't convince me that any one of them would have allowed Johnny Manziel to play after his last stunt that followed a bunch of stupid acts. Prior acts I might add that damn near ruined any chance he had of being an NFL QB and acts that the team supported him through.
And yet, Pettine is the bad guy for doing exactly what I think any of the coaches mentioned above would have done.
One thing.. I don't think any of those coaches would have allowed the team to draft Manziel. Pettine not being that "NAME" coach was probably not able to convince Haslam or Farmer to pass. A first year head coach doesn't usually have the juice to do that.
Manziel made his bed, he needs to sleep in it. For him, it's another lost year but it happened at his own doing.
This kid can blame nobody but himself.
IMO, he can't be trusted. PERIOD

The rationale would mean that NFL employees are infallible Whoa there. NOBODY I know of ever said that NFL Employees are infallible. I don't think anyone ever believed that. That's a real jump there. But, if a person gets a job and lasts for years in the NFL, it's safe to say that they know more that MOST fans. That doesn't make them infallible. Just makes them more experienced than you or I. So yeah, we're sitting here on a message board and they are running a franchise. That know more, that doesn't mean they are better than us, but they SHOULD BE and if I were a betting man, I'd bet on someone that has been in the NFL for years rather than someone from a message board, no matter how well intentioned.

This 3 ring circus we call the Browns is pathetic! Punish Johnny Manziel publicly in front of the whole world for partying and drinking in public! Which by the way is 100% legal in the USA, and then claim that he was benched because he lied! I have this feeling that Pettine has it out for Manziel and will stop at nothing to make sure he helps him destroy whatever is left of this young quarterbacks career!

Wouldn't it stand to reason that one could expect that QB drafted in the 1st to ACT like a QB drafted in the 1st? And does your line of reasoning cover other guys drafted in the 1st like Gilbert? The kid has athletic ability (as does Manziel)... but I don't see anyone shedding a tear over the fact that he's not playing. I'd bet if we took a poll most people here would say they don't expect him to be on the roster next season. I'd agree with you that it IS a small sample size... but at some point he has to justify being around long enough to expand that sample size. You guys are upset at Pettine because of these perceived minor issues... but what does it say about Johnny that he hasn't grown up enough that these minor issues shouldn't exist?

Tom Coughlin and Bill Parcells are also coaches who won multiple Super Bowls.
I cannot imagine Manziel getting away with that with either one of those head coaches either.

PERIOD
And I don't think that Johnny would behave as he has if the afore- mentioned men were his coaches- it's called culture
