Yeah baby!! Steinbach entrenched in the trenches Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 05.23.2007 With the myriad of activity that has happened since, it seems like ages ago that the Browns signed former Bengals offensive lineman Eric Steinbach as their premier free agent of the 2007 offseason. But despite more recent additions of Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn and Jamal Lewis, Steinbach may be the team's most significant offseason acquisition of the year and certainly may be so in terms of helping immediately. While eyes were turned towards Charlie Frye, Quinn, Lewis and Thomas on Day One of the Browns' 2007 organized team activities Tuesday, it was a monumental day for Steinbach. Like many of the team's new veterans, it was his first time on the field in a Browns' uniform. Steinbach was a full participant Tuesday despite undergoing an appendectomy in late April. He said he's 100 percent thanks to the minimally invasive style of the procedure. "It was a little scare, but these days with the laparoscopy I was out for a week or two," Steinbach said. "Glad it's now instead of September or October." Having spent the first four seasons of his career as a Bengal, it was also his first time in an NFL camp aside from Cincinnati's -- and his first chance to work on field with his future linemates like Hank Fraley and Ryan Tucker. He said practices and meetings are basically run the same so there's little adjustment there. The big change is getting used to a new group of teammates and growing cohesive as a line. Steinbach was lined up Tuesday at left guard between center Fraley and veteran left tackle Kevin Shaffer. Rounding out the club's first-team offensive line on Day One was offseason acquisition Seth McKinney at right guard and Tucker at right tackle. He said it will take some time to get used to but he's optimistic about the results once the group gets experience playing together. "We have the chance to build a good line here and I know this city and team has been waiting for that for the last few years," he said following practice Tuesday. "With this group of guys, if we stay healthy -- and that's the key thing -- we'll learn the system and when the season starts we'll have this group in tact." Browns first-round pick Thomas worked at left tackle with the twos Tuesday. Of Thomas and his chances to soon join the starters, Steinbach said, "He was a heck of a college player but there's a big difference coming from college to the NFL. It's way too early to tell." Until Tuesday, Steinbach's experience with his teammates had been in the weight room, where he's been a participant in the team's strength and conditioning program. There, the team builds camaraderie and prepares physically for the upcoming season. But nothing is a substitute for on-field work. "The program is great," Steinbach said. "(Strength and conditioning) coach (Tom Myslinski) and his staff have done a great job getting us ready for being up to this point. We're in great shape to keep improving. "We've been training for the last eight weeks running and lifting so it's always good to get the helmet back on and get together with the offense and get the plays going." Browns head coach Romeo Crennel often says it's hard to evaluate players, especially linemen, without pads. All of OTA practices will take place in shorts, but Steinbach said it's still a crucial time for players at his position to learn an aspect of the game that has nothing to do with hitting. "(This is the time for) the most important stuff, which is technique, fundamentals, cohesiveness, and getting snap counts," Steinbach said. "There's a reason we're not banging and doing contact now because in order to be a successful offense you have to get the timing and rhythm down." As for the progress, Steinbach said it's going well, but it's far from perfect at this point. That's why the club still has three weeks of OTAs, a full-squad minicamp in June, a month of training camp and four preseason games before the games begin to count. "As far as going out and learning the new guys and learning the different steps with the guys you're playing next to, that's going to take some time to get used to," he said. "Of course there's going to be mistakes here and there, but the good news is we can go back in, correct it and keep improving each day." linky

That's the thing I'm excited about, this guy is a proven NFL talent who will be an upgrade on day 1... There is no "hope" or "if" about it.. the guy can play.

To me, this is my biggest and brightest dream for the line. Looking at the starting linemen for Game One of the regular season ever since 1999 tells the tale - the starting linemen have changed every single year since the inception. You can't win with a revolving door at nearly every line position. Continuity and familiarity are so unbelievably huge when it comes to having a dominant line, and we've had so little of it, it's been sad. With Thomas, Steinbach and Bentley (even possibly Shaffer) on long term deals, we could be looking at relatively the same line for 5+ years if *knock on wood* we can keep healthy for the most part. When you take line talent, and add continuity... well, let's just say I'm giddy over the possibilities.

So even a guy who's PROVEN himself in this league sees the importance of being in there from day 1? I thought so.

Especially at a position where we were really hurting, though few will admit just how badly out of respect for Druz.

so, do you have any comments on Steinbach? Or is it your intention to turn this into a BE's thread? Because heaven knows there can never be too many of those...

I did BOTH! I gave Steinbach credit for having his priorities in line. I give him props that he understands the importance of "being here". I believe that HIS type of attitude is the kind that leads to success. I think he's been a "class act" throughout his career. Hard working and straight forward. Unless things change,I think we'll find BQ and Thomas to be very much the same way. I like, admire and tip my hat to "true professionals". And there's really no comparison to that and the "other type of player".

What even excites me more is that he's YOUNG and NOT on the downside of his career (like many other FA acquisitions of ours). He'll man that spot, and do it VERY well, for several more years.
It's nice not having to think about upgrading one of our guard spots... finally.

I simply have shown one difference between a respected, successfull NFL player and one who has not yet achieved that success. Both are members of this team. Both command a high salary. One has done his job efficiantly and effectively. One talks about doing it.
There's a stark contrast to be drawn from that. I think when you SEE "successfull leaders" on the field,it's important to realise "why and how" they got there. And conversly,it's not bad to point out why some "can't" at least to this point.
Maybe the wrong people are getting the message.

I hope the Shaffer at LT crap is over by the end of OTs. We wouldn't have spent a # 3 pick on Thomas if we thought Kevin was a good LT, and all we are doing now is holding back the OL by not admitting the obvious and putting Joe in with the 1st team. I can see this now in OTs, but if KS is still the 1st team LT in TC I am going to lose a little faith in Romeo, because the writing is on the wall that Joe is the LT for the next 10 years, and playing into KS's ego doesn't help this OL become cohesive..............and it doesn't give KS a chance to become the RT next year, and that's the only true shot he has at starting on this OL. Starting at TC our OL should look like this.......
LT.......JT LG......ES C........Fraley RG.....Mkinnley/Tucker (both sharing reps) RT......Tuck/KS (again both sharing reps)
There isn't any need to slow down the development of this OL by playing footsies with KS about being our LT, becuase it ain't going to happen, and these guys need to start gelling ASAP............and KS needs to learn to play RT ASAP.
As for Steiner, man what a pro and class act. I am so glad he's a Brown, and will be for the forseeable future. Guys if LCB comes back next year our OL from C to the left is set for the next 5-7 years..........man I though I would never say that as a Browns fan....lol.

It was a simple point to show the difference between how a character guy and true team leader acts, verses someone who just talks about it. That's all. And I had more class than to pull your "mom" into it. Even though for some strange reason,I wasn't surprised you did that. Sometrhing about the "apple not falling far from the tree". Definately a cheap shot. But that's okay................................................ I'm sure I'll be on this board long enough to extract a pound of flesh in return.

hate to break it to ya...but LT isn't a postion where a rookie can jus come in and take over....i won't be shocked if i don't see him start at LT in game 1....i hope he does but if he does i will expect him to get beat early n often....

He is better in every way but experience than KS is right now..........day 1. He has much better technique, much better feet, much better hand placement, leverage.............you name it and he's better than KS. So yeah your right in that he's going to struggle next year (all rookie LTs do......toughest transition next to QB), but he'll still start game 1, because the guy he's up against just doesn't have the skill set to be an LT.........hell maybe not a RT either, but it's his only shot of making it here. We aren't doing KS or the OL any favors by denying the inevitable.
Again, this is fine for OTs, because it shows that JT has to earn the promotion, and I am all for that, but by TC the dog and pony show needs to be over and Kevin needs to be told that he needs to learn to play RT.

I love Braylon Edwards and I believe in him as a person and a player. Go Browns! Don't let all the big mouth wannabes get to you Braylon. They are a small percentage of the fanbase. To bad Cleveland has some of the most judgemental and idiotic fans in the world. They think they are gods of message boards and in reality they are a bunch of freakin nerds!

....um that is why we drafted him lol..cuz he is better than KS...but that experience thing is a big deal...will he start game 1? who knows i hope he does but like i said it's not going to be pretty...i don't think KS is a horrible LT...or else savage would have NEVER paid that much to get him...
You want JT to start and get the struggling out of the way now...which is fine by me...but it's a brand new O..i think the more experienced ppl we have out there on day 1 the better off we will be...because even the vets aren't goin to be clicking full speed and to throw a rookie into that mess is not a good idea...JMO

That's not very logical deduction...
a) Savage could have made a wrong choice...I know he's got a halo around his head right now, but he's capable of being wrong
...and, more importantly, because it's true...
b) Shaffer was the best available option at the time we desperately needed a left tackle.
Horrible LT? I wouldn't say that. Average LT? Depends on what your definition of 'average' is...

I agree w/you and don't bother even listening to the guy who talks about people's mothers.
Anyway......Joe needs to be put at LT now. Screw Shaffer's feelings. Joe is a better LT than Shaffer right now. And Shaffer needs to get all the work in that he can if he is going to play on the right side. I would much rather see Shaffer in competition w/Tucker and McKinney than wasting time at LT.

Agreed. Even further I'll throw up if Romeo pulls a Braylon with Joe (but I don't think it'll happen).
I don't sit in the meetings, but I'd be willing to bet that they're just paying lip service to Shaffer at this point. If they're not, and Romeo can't clearly see that Joe is better, I'll be amazed.

We may be a small percentage (people who read boards) but we tend to be more informed than the general fan. I'm not saying that we know more about football but we do hear more news about what happens with the team. I love the name calling, Keep it up.

I agree. If he doesn't start at LT, I will wonder if he is all that good.
To be honest, I don't expect him to struggle all that much...sure...some.....but blocking is blocking. I don't think the transition is that hard. You get in the way of the other player and don't allow him to make the play.
I can see some missed assignments and stuff like that, but once he is clear on who he is blocking, and what play we are running, I expect to see a wall that wins way more than he loses..and we probably will.

While I respect Rac's philosophy on starting the incumbent ..we ALL KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN. I agree with you..the only reason Thomas isn't on the first team in TC is a holdout.. ............and KS needs to learn to play RT ASAP. He also needs to learn RG too The sooner this is sorted out the better so Thomas/Shaffer/McKinney know what their spots are and can get COMFORTABLE at those positions.. The other factor is to see if KS can play RT or RG..if he bombs out of both Phil has to make a decision..bench him or trade him. It's also possible to give Tucker reps at RG..because the plan is to move KS to RT..well then Tucker should slide inside.. There doesn't need to be any drama with this, we've got a new legid LT now lets move forward.

I agree. If he doesn't start at LT, I will wonder if he is all that good. So if my cereal gets soggy before I eat it do I need to replace it too?

LOL...........I made a prediction the other day, before this story came out, that you would be making comments such as these. And I can't wait to hear what you have to say the first time he gives up a sack.
Thanks for not letting me down.
No problem.
I don't care if he gives up a sack....I think KS gave up 3-4...as a rook,Joe can give up 5-6 before I will worry much about it.
I don't expect him to play as well as a veteran, there are going to be growing pains. But as bad as many painted Schaffer, then it makes sense to me to use him as the standard.....it shouldn't be any problem replacing a player as bad as Kevin Shaffer.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong
