http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/143122...tarting-qb-roleBrowns move QB Johnny Manziel back to starting role Johnny Manziel will return as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns after a two-game benching for his off-field missteps, sources told ESPN on Monday. Browns coach Mike Pettine said after Sunday's 37-3 loss to the Bengals that he would make a decision about the quarterback position on Monday. While a team spokesman said he had no knowledge that Manziel would be named the starter, one source told ESPN that Manziel would replace Austin Davis as the starter unless Manziel had done something to jeopardize his status between the end of Sunday's loss and Monday. Manziel's start would come at home against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Cleveland also has games remaining against the Seahawks, Chiefs and Steelers to finish their season. Johnny Manziel, who was benched by the Browns after he lied about video of him in Texas clubs, will again against the 49ers this week, sources told ESPN. AP Photo/David Richard Davis finished 25-of-38 for 230 yards with no touchdowns and an interception against the Bengals. He was sacked three times. The Browns want further evaluation of Manziel's ability on the field and how he handles any success and failure off it, a source told ESPN. Even then, the sources said, the Browns are uncertain if Manziel can re-establish the hope the franchise had when they made him a first-round pick in 2014. Manziel was demoted to third-team quarterback after being disciplined for his decisions during the team's bye week and because he lied to the coaching staff about a video that appeared of him partying in Austin, Texas. Josh McCown returned as the starter in Week 12, but suffered a season-ending broken collarbone and was replaced by Davis.

So, I wonder if, after the big meeting last night, Pettine was given an ultimatum. Play Johnny or pack your bags right now...

I'm betting Pettine didn't make this decision.

that Manziel would replace Austin Davis as the starter unless Manziel had done something to jeopardize his status between the end of Sunday's loss and Monday. What an odd line in the article. Manziel was on Instagram last night. I think he was trolling Pettine. What I saw he wished himself a happy birthday by posting a pic of himself doing the finger roll thing. The other one was with his dog.

If we would win out...heck 3 out of 4 would be pretty significant. It has all the players back on track and know who their starting QB is and that they can believe in him. With Manziel at QB we are winners that will be the frame of mind and for all to get better for 2016 to WIN some more???
I think we have a top 10 pick pretty much locked up. If we lose a couple top 5...Most important is to win our last game the Steelers and knock them out of the playoffs
If we lose and he plays well - not as painful - but still want the players to win. Gain confidence get the loser stigma off our backs!

Doesn't matter how well Johnny plays, the rest of the team sucks. Even if he musters 1 or more wins it will still be up to the NEW FO and HC as to rather he stays or starts... What a wasted opportunity and I blame Pettine.

Man, so I hate that I am already in this mindset (I blame it on franchise mode in Madden), but what the hell do we do in the draft in JFF looks OK in these last few games?
His sample size is still so small, playing in meaningless games. If he looks ok, and we win 2 or 3 of our next 4, do we roll the dice with John? Do we draft for defense and playmakers and hope Manziel can make it work?
We'll have our pick at QB-do we bypass a top-of-the-draft prospect to roll with JFF + Bosa and WR?
....is it bad that I almost wish he just completely flounders so we at least have clarity going into next season?
I hate the fan that I've become.

I hate the fan that I've become. There is not a franchise qb in this coming draft anyways. I personally do not see one. Johnny has as much chance of being that guy as any in the draft. Thats my opinion anyways. So, if we do have the number 1 overall, let someone trade up with us, move back, and collect as many of the best available players as we can. Hard to pick a specific need on this team, upgrades needed at every position, except left tackle and punter.

Why does Pettine need to have a meeting? Really?
What benefit do the BROWNS get by starting Austin Davis?
Why won't Pettine make decisions that are in the best interest of the BROWNS?
Getting your 1st round QB who, by his own admission, has worked his butt off this year into the game for some experience is best for the BROWNS.
Trying to make some silly point is what is best for MIKE PETTINE and MIKE PETTINE'S EGO.
How do we continuously end up with these bum losers?
wth...

Pettine is in over his head and this media feeding frenzy has gotten away from him.
Even my friends who are not Browns fans but have apps like Bleacher Report and the NFL app say that they get more "Breaking News" updates dealing with the Browns than any other team... and we are 2-10 and haven't fired anybody.
We should have faded into NFL obscurity weeks ago but continue to be the laughing stock, right squarely in the NFL spotlight, because we can't make a freakin' decision, won't follow through on them once we do make them... it's embarrassing.
And I'm tired of being told I'm not a real fan because I have ZERO enthusiasm to follow this circus...

It is obvious Pet isnt gonna play johnny unless forced to. he was all giddy with excitement about the play of Davis.
I just want Haslam to come forward and address this embarrassing product that we are seeing.

I only read a little bit of twitter transcript, but man, Pettine was throwing some darts today. "Can't be successful without a unified building." "The organization wants what's best for the Browns, but have different ideas on how to accomplish it." "We have a good idea of what Johnny is from a football standpoint." I called it last week. He's setting up an Austin Davis start for the rest of the season. Even he won't do this, though. He'll call Manziel the starter tomorrow, and he'll hate every second of it.

If Pettine comes off with Davis in all of this. I expect him to be fired - immediately. Sorry to say. But he is writing his own obit right now with this Davis thing if he continues. I just don't get the admiration of a QB (Davis) who could not get us into the Red Zone once the entire game.
