Click bait and then some.

It's Josh Gordon debuting his art at Art Basel Miami, a giant art show/festival (Compared to other art show/festival). He's not Manzeling out there.

I think it's incredibly dumb for him not to be able to go to work. I understand the stance on weed (for now), but seriously, let the guy come to the facility every day and be a part of something. Forcing the team to turn their back for a whole year makes no sense to me. Would be even worse for a guy on a serious drug.

I love the uproar for guys like Gordon and Manziel doing stuff outside of football.

Meanwhile, Gronk slams beers and parties all night, but do you really think people in New England care? Puh lease.

They should have let him play. It was a stupid video. He wasn't arrested. And if he plays bad, then there's your reason to get rid of him.

Had they played him after the Tennessee game, and he progressed, and he won a few more games, and this whole thing looked a lot more promising, nobody would care about a video with champagne, or signed 100 dollar bills.

People are incredibly hypocritical, and a lot of it is because they didn't like the guy in the first place.

For the most part, I agree with every word of this post.

Where I would disagree slightly and defend Pettine a little bit is showing some of the tough love to Manziel. If he just handed the job over to Manziel after the Tennessee game, he may not be playing as well as he is now. There is no way Manziel should not have started against Cincy, but otherwise I somewhat agree with the handling, although I have been very vocal about Manziel playing for the simple fact that McCown represented no future at all.

But maybe, just maybe Manziel appreciates it more after having it taken away. He's playing and preparing like he doesn't want it taken away again. Hell, the entire team seems behind him now. What a reversal. The rub, of course, is a small sample size. Would have been nice if Manziel played that second Cincy game.

If Manziel continues to show some growth and there is no Andrew Luck type in this draft, the team absolutely has to pass on QB in the draft. They have to. I think it would be incredibly dumb to draft another guy if Manziel can finish the season strong, particularly if there just isn't a slam dunk guy.

This is great news, I'm glad Josh is spending his time productively.

I was also happy to hear right at the beginning his older brother is a computer engineer for the Navy. I didn't know much of Josh's background but having a stable career minded older brother gives me more hope for Josh than I had before. I was worried he was straight from the streets with no examples of decent work behavior.

To be perfectly blunt, hearing his story may benefit others with subsance abuse problems. Maybe a joint effort with Manziel?

@DC:

I didn't mind the detour. It didn't keep me from the main point of the thread at all. AND... I never pass up a chance at a chuckle- no matter the subject matter.

___________________

That said...

I've been immersed in The Arts since I was a little kid. It's probably very alien to many on this board because, well... 'America,' so I always seem to feel the need to champion it to others in terms that they might understand/connect with.

Lots of people I've met have the misconception that 'Artistic expression' is at best, some esoteric exercise... or at worst, some indulgence that has no connection to the real world. IMHO, that opinion is formed without fact or evidence for support.

Music
Theater
2D canvas (and other) visual art
Sculpture
Dance
Architecture (yes... it's an art, as well as a skill and science)
Creative Writing (in all its forms)

...and every other offshoot of these requires commitment, focus and true long-term discipline to achieve excellence in the field. Even among the kids I've taught, those who didn't really commit totally to the Art still acknowledge the benefits they reaped from their casual involvement:

mental focus
openness to new ideas/stimuli
a positive outlook
greater self examination/awareness
widened perspective

...the list goes on and on.

IMHO, finding this avenue and outlet is a positive for JG. I've spent the better share of 3 decades seeing how involvement in The Arts has positively changed the lives of some of the most hopeless of souls. In my own experience, I've seen ghetto kids become poets, visual artists, ballerinas and composers of serious art music. I even taught cello to a student who moved to a rural area just outside of my town- straight from a double-wide in the Appalachian hills. That kid went from cold showers in a trailer/crapping in an outhouse to a full-ride scholarship in Music Performance at Baldwin-Wallace.

So please... don't tell me that The Arts don't do anything to help make better Human Beings.
I know better.
I've seen it for myself.

If JG has truly found something that gives him focus, nourishes his inner core, and makes him a more well-rounded person, then I'm all for it... even if he never plays another snap for the team I follow. AND... if this involvement in art can be translated to his character/profession, I can see almost no downside to his pursuits as a player, team mate and professional athlete if he does come back to us.

I only know about him through our mutual connection: a professional sports team that I happen to follow. I care about what happens to him because he's a person who's caught my interest. What I've seen is this: the very things that seem to have been lacking in Gordon's life are the exact things that involvement in The Arts addresses... in almost everyone who dips their toes into it.

______________________

And I wouldn't say these things with such conviction if The Arts hadn't saved me from myself, many years ago.

You see- at one time in my life, I WAS Josh Gordon.
I went from a "talented" college dropuot/chronic substance abuser/ne'er-do-well, to a respected member of my community who actually represented his family, friends and loved ones on the stage of Carnegie Hall- the 'Super Bowl' of our profession.

So please forgive me, if I have a soft spot in my heart for the Josh Gordons of this world. I don't have any problem admitting to myself and all of you that I have a bias when stories like this pop up.

Real People inhabit those uniforms we see on Sunday.

It's actually OK for us to care about them as people... just as much as we care about the Browns' win/loss record.

I mean... think about it: if they aren't real people, would we have "A Football Life" or "30/30?"

.02,
Clem.

p.s. And in case you're wondering... I feel the same way about Johnny Manziel, too. Kid could benefit from an outlet other than golf and 'nightlife'.....

Meanwhile, Mike Pettine is talking like a coach who either knows he staying, or knows he's history. After making somewhat controversial statements this week about Russell Wilson and the 49ers effort, here's what he said about the relationship between Manziel and Gordon:

[Excerpt]

But even Pettine admitted he could see people outside the building "doing the math" and concluding the combination might be volatile.

"As I've said before," Pettine said, "we advise our players but we don’t micromanage them outside of the building.”

He also said that if the two are with the Browns in 2016, the relationship could be a benefit.

"That will turn out to be a positive thing if Josh is with us next year and Johnny is on the roster that those two have built a rapport together," Pettine said.

Yes, he said "if" about both players.

Asked to clarify, he said the team would "absolutely" welcome Gordon back if the commissioner reinstates him.

"He's a Cleveland Brown," Pettine said.

But asked about the likelihood that Manziel will be throwing to Gordon in Cleveland in 2016, Pettine said: "That’s just hypothetical, trying to project it to next year. Those are all questions that will get answered sooner than later. My sole focus is this weekend.”

Later in the day on The Mike Pettine Show, Pettine clarified that he was talking only about the uncertainty of Gordon's situation. Addressing "conspiracy theorists," Pettine said: "Johnny certainly is on the roster. There is no imminent plan, for those out there, to move him."

Wow. This is not the Josh Gordon we have seen. I am not saying he isnt likely to fail another drug test tomorrow but he did not come off as that lazy the world is picking on poor Josh Gordon whiner that we have seen since he was drafted.

I read people very well, and what I saw in Gordon in this little piece was a different person than what we have known.

I am a Manziel fan but I never bought into him being a different person. He is the same just working to refocus on football. Gordon impressed me. I dont know if he found help or had an epiphany but for the first time ever he seemed genuine.

There are people in my own family like this. They didn't want him drafted. They aren't so much rooting against the Browns, but they're ready to pounce on the negative stuff. They took a victory lap after his horrible play last year.

It all boils down to being right. Everyone wants to be right. I don't care to be right about Johnny, I just want the Browns to be GOOD.

It's funny though, these people in my family are quite vocal on Twitter during Browns games. I looked back at their TL during the game, and they were tweeting about other things and nothing about the Browns. It's quite sad.

If Johnny screws up again, or plays bad, they'll be there to take another victory lap..

I just don't understand these people that watch the Browns almost begrudgingly.. They can't wait to sound off about something bad that they do. It's like they love to feed off the negativity but don't want to appreciate anything good. I get that this team is bad and it's been a rough year, but this isn't real life. It's freaking football. I still enjoy watching the games. I'm frustrated, but I watch hoping to see that moment that we'll look back on as the play, or the game, that turned around the Browns..

If you watch games with a negative attitude like that, why bother? Maybe sports isn't the right thing for you.. Maybe they should go watch a disney movie where everything comes out roses at the end every single time?

Really Josh Gordon and Johnny Football both need to hang out together. No puns intended.
