When was the last time, our defense was good at tackling? I would think punishing your opponant, would be important,to a losing team. Coaching? I cant believe the players, can be so poor at the basics of football. At least we are still in the running for the top pick. ALL DEFENSIVE PLAYERS PLEASE!
Thanks art!

All defensive players! All!
We don't need anything else, only defensive players.
I was hoping we could get another backup center.

I don't know about all. I sure would like to see a WR or two who isn't a smurf.

We should compromise and spend all of our picks on CB's who could be switched to WR in the NFL.

Every year it seems we have either an offense,or defense, but never both. We need some big strong guys, who punish the opposition. We want the running backs and receivers to be scared to go into the secondary. When you miss basic tackles, your just inviting them,to run at you again. Our receivers dont look bad..what looks bad,is a defense, letting a team,go 7 for 9 on third downs..lol

we're always a poor tackling team, at least for the past 30 years
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

We have smurf receivers who do pretty well outside the red zone where they can maneuver in space, but not in the red zone, where open space is vertical. We need someone with height and a talent for winning contested balls or we will continue to settle for field goals. I'm not sure the defense needs that many more pieces; a playmaking ILB, pass rusher, and some depth in the backfield. We have been drafting primarily defense for the last couple of years. We also need offensive playmakers.

This thing isn't going to get fixed in one season. Clean house, start from the beginning and build almost from scratch. We have one or two players that cut the mustard. Barnadge for sure doe. Duke has impressed me at times. In general though, we need everything. New front office, new coaching staff and new players at many many positions on both sides of the ball. Dumpster fire.

A team often takes the persona of it's head coach. Lombardi's teams were tough, Paul Browns teams were smart, Pettines team is....
If you run a soft camp and you run soft practices it's no surprise how your team will play. Soft.

I'm tired of seeing those weak shoulder bumps. You don't even teach that to high school players, but they do it on the NFL all the time. What ever happened to hitting and wrapping? Are DBs exempt from fundamental football?

Blaming the coaches for poor tackling is nonsense. Have you seen the recent agreement regarding camps? Have you seen injury reports? Do you really think other teams practice tackling more than we do? The problem is that we are lacking talent. But, let's keep blaming the coaches, fire them, keep the moron that drafted and acquired the poor talent, and we will be a playoff team next year.

Coaches aren't to be blamed! Any lack of skills and abilities are the problems of the GM! The coach wouldn't even be a problem if the GM would just draft all-pros all the time! Of course coaches still teach tackling. It'd be naive to think otherwise. In fact, here is a link about Seattle's tackling technique: http://smartfootball.com/defense/pete-ca...for-head-injuryI've said time and time again, tackling is probably our biggest weakness on the team. Proper tackling could probably win us 3-4 more games this year alone. Pettine and Farmer are both morons. Probably equally moronic in every facet of their philosophies. On one hand we see a defensive coach who can't teach tackling, and on the other we see a GM thinking you can replace all-pro talent with 4th and 5th rounders.

Honestly, even if Pettine did practice just as much tackling as every other team, which he doesn't, he'd still be a moron. Because not only is he not nearly as effective as any other coach in the league when it comes to practice time and tackling skills, it also shows that he isn't focusing on major areas of improvement. He needs to be gone no matter what.

LOL........the Browns don't practice tackling. Pet is such a moron that he doesn't understand that tackling is important like the geniuses on this board. Our problems have zero to do w/lack of talent, it's all about poor coaching. Heck, we don't EVER practice tackling, blocking, passing, hand-offs, etc............ I maintain that all of the people who bad-mouthed some of us who told you BEFORE THE SEASON that the roster wasn't that great put yourselves in a position to blame the wrong parties. I will be very clear here: Pet should be retained. Farmer should be fired. Whomever thinks the opposite is utterly clueless in my eyes.

This is the worst defense in football and Pet was brought in to top off what was a pretty talented defense. Pet is 100% responsible for the garbage we see. Bademosi is a horrible corner and one of the worst we have ever had but he is a great special teamer, so why the hell do we continue to trot him out there while guys we know are better dont get on the field?
We have given up over 30 pts a game in 9 freaking games this year. This is Pet's defense and I know a new HC will want their own QB and it probably means Johnny is gone as well but Pet is horrible. Mike Pettine is a coach that hands out participation awards. You can suck but if you try hard in practice you will play.

It's pretty amazing how we have 5 probowlers -- almost half our defense -- and an OLB, who had the 12th most sacks last year (Tied with Clay Matthews), and we're still not talented. But the Denver defense, who also have 5 probowlers, are the best defense in the league. I guess the difference must be... TALENT!!!!!!!! FWIW, I do realize that Denver does have a more talented defense than us. But they're mainly better coached. There are a lot of coaches who could do a lot more with our defense than Pettine. I'm only being slightly facetious when I think Rob Ryan would be better here than Pettine.

QB play was not the problem this year , defense gets a solid F grade on the year.
Fire/demote farmer,/oneil, find a GM that can draft first round talent.

we last had good tackling with mangini and that's because his focus was not on hitting hard but wrapping up. that is the last time in 20 years i can remember decent tackling.

Dick Jauron had these guys making solid plays and few mistakes. I know people dont like his bend dont break philosophy but he was a hell of a coach for us.

Remember when Pettine said he didn't need his CBs to tackle well? I think that extends to the entire defense.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Such a funny coincidence that the topic of tackling got posted.
Over the weekend I saw some games before the Browns game and I stated to see a trend. I kept saying to myself "what is the NFL doing doesn't anybody know how to tackle"?
Then the Browns game- more of the same.
All I see is guys playing bumper car. Trying to hit the ball carrier with a shoulder expecting the carrier to go down. Nobody wrapping up. Few "breaking down" getting into a tackling position and tackling properly.
It is like a plague in the league.

There is never a simple answer to complex problems, but I think ESPN culture has something to do with it. A proper wrap up tackle is boring, doesn't make the evening highlight reel. What makes the "Day's Top 10" are high impact 'blow up' hits.

Haven't I heard or read somewhere we also have the highest paid defense too? Yet we are the bottom of the barrel material of the league. If that's not pathetic, I don't know what is then...

Until our offense can average nearly 30 points a game it just doesn't matter.
