After letting Jim Harbaugh walk away last offseason, the 49ers turned to the unproven Jim Tomsula to take over as head coach. If the 49ers decide to part ways with Tomsula after one season and go after a more established name this time, one former head coach with a Super Bowl ring seems to be willing to help repair the sinking franchise.
According to Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated's Monday Morning Quarterback, Mike Holmgren, 67, is interested in returning to the 49ers.
Per Dave Mahler of 950 KJR, Holmgren isn't even keeping his interest a secret.
Holmgren's resume is impressive. As the coach of the Packers and Seahawks, Holmgren amassed a 161-111 record, winning a ring in 1996 and reaching the Super Bowl two more times later in his career, which ended after the 2008 season. Most recently, Holmgren served as the president of the Browns -- a job that didn't go as planned. In Holmgren's three years in Cleveland, the Browns went 14-34. Holmgren's tenure ended following the 2012 season and he admitted last year that he should've coached the Browns.
Of course, there's a chance the 49ers job won't even be available, despite the team's unflattering 4-11 record. As CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora recently wrote, the team could retain the current regime.
They just did their big move a year ago by pushing Jim Harbaugh out and they surprised many around the league by limiting the role of influential front office exec Paraag Marathe recently. That's probably the extent of the moves. Marathe is exceedingly close to owner Jed York and the implication here seems to be that getting him out of football operations in anything but a cap/money capacity was throwing the fans a bone during a season in which they can only dream of the heights they achieved under Harbaugh. Coach Jim Tomsula and GM Trent Baalke are very highly thought of by the Yorks and they have been loyal warriors for them and despite the course of this season I'd wager they stand pat.
Whoever is in charge next season will be able to select a player early in next year's draft. As it currently stands, the 49ers are slotted to pick fifth.
