I don't know if this will work. I am intrigued. It is, at the very least, revolutionary (some revolutions are bad).

This should improve our on base percentage, but I am wondering if we have enough pitching? Is it possible to bring Wheeden back?

Funny. But DePodesta at least has some football credentials. He played football at Harvard and worked in the CFL.

I am excited.

Technically he is not. Jonah Hill's character is named Peter Brand. It is actually a combination of multiple different assistants (one of them DePodesta).

I'm okay with that. There is a lot of validity behind analytics. This hire is interesting, I'm not against it.

The rise of analytics has changed baseball and basketball forever (and for the better). It looks like we are trying to be the Oakland A's or Houston Rockets of the NFL. This will be fun.

Not saying there is a direct correlation but one thing I am finding interesting regarding analytics and football is the rise of DraftKings and Fanduel being so successful for those people that implement analytics into their weekly lineups...and are making million of dollars. There is logic behind using a data based system. I think there is a place for it in the NFL, but wonder the difference between finding weekly success based on matchups and history to those decisions that are more long-term decisions.

It doesn't actually matter, but there were aspects of other assistants involved with the character.

Here is a statement from the the team on the hirings:

Quote:
The Cleveland Browns named Paul DePodesta the team’s Chief Strategy Officer, Owner Jimmy Haslam announced Tuesday. DePodesta will be responsible for assessing and implementing best practices and strategies that will provide the organization with the comprehensive resources needed to make optimal decisions.

“We are fortunate to bring in Paul, an extremely talented, highly respected sports executive who will add a critical dimension to our front office,” said Haslam. “His approach and ambition to find the best pathways for organizational success transcend one specific sport and his experience as a high level sports executive make him a terrific addition to the Cleveland Browns.

“While we are excited about what Paul will provide our organization, we remain fully focused on the critical task of identifying the right head coach and a top talent evaluator who will provide the football expertise needed to be successful.”

“Paul has invaluable experience in management and leadership with a number of highly successful sports teams,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown. “His ability to create better processes and systems throughout organizations, his use of data as a tool to produce better outcomes, and his relentless focus on looking for innovative ways to create more success will be a strong asset as we look to be as comprehensive as possible in our decision making.

“Additionally, Paul will help members of our player development, high performance and analytics departments maximize their efforts. There are many areas that we have not fully capitalized on that will enhance the growth and performance of our players over time.”

“Cleveland and football have always held a special place in my heart,” said DePodesta. “It was 20 years ago this month, after pursing my first love of football and looking at every possible job in the NFL, that I got the biggest break I could imagine – a job offer from the American League Champion Cleveland Indians. As excited as I was then, I am even more excited now to return to Cleveland and to try to help the Browns.
“My focus is to bring whatever experience and perspective I can to collaborate with the team, with the intent of helping us make more informed and successful decisions. Admittedly, there will be an awful lot for me to learn, but I want nothing more than to help bring consistent, championship caliber football back to Cleveland and Browns fans and I look forward to starting right away.”

Owning 20 years of MLB front office experience, DePodesta began his MLB career as an intern in player development in 1996 for the Cleveland Indians before becoming the Major League Advance Scout for the 1997-1998 seasons and later the Special Assistant to the GM. He then served as an Assistant General Manager, General Manager, Executive Vice President, and Vice President of Scouting and Player Development for the Oakland A's, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and New York Mets. In each of those stints, DePodesta's teams won division titles, culminating in a trip to the World Series this past October with the Mets. The Mets' NL East title in 2015 made him the only executive in MLB to win division titles with five different organizations.

DePodesta has been recognized by Fortune, who ranked him a top 10 innovator under 40.

A native of Alexandria, Va., DePodesta graduated cum laude from Harvard in 1995. He played football and baseball for the Crimson and was a varsity football letterwinner in 1994.

I understand what the Browns are going for here but at some point they'll need some football guys to weed through some things, IMO.

I wonder if this will have any positive spin on the worst job in football if there are some people (HC, GMs namely) that are buying into this new approach?

We'll see.

So .... our top 2 football guys are a lawyer and a baseball guy?

There's no way this could go wrong. crazy

If you look at our past 5 drafts, ask yourself, would a draft based off analystics have produced better results? MY answer would be definitively, yes. If they hire a GM with football experience to coincide with the analytics, I'm not sure I could have thought up a scenario where it turned out better.

You know who is a science/analytics guy? Chip Kelly, DO IT Haslam!

I don't know how this will end up, but if analytics is the main theme here....being a lawyer and basebally guy is completely irrelevant, IMO. Accumulation of data eliminates the human element to a certain extent.

Now, they'll need football people, of course....GM, scouts, HC, coaches to sift through that. But if they are using analytics to develop the overarching system, past profession is a non-factor except for the ability to create the system. Experienced sports analytics with this this new guy seems to tells us he knows it.....The believe in analytics from Sashi , lends support for it.

Again, not sure if this is gonna work...this seems like a very progressive approach in the NFL. Not necessarily sports, but certainly the NFL.
