Look around the league.

one recent team to improve dramatically in 2 years or less would be the Chiefs who went from 2-14 to 11-5 when they went from Crennel/Pioli to Reid/Dorsey they didn't really have to much of an overall in their roster to make this work they just brought the right guy in and it worked quickly and they followed the next season with a 9-7 record and this season being 11-5 again. Just an example of a team turning it around quickly. I know their history for the last 10 seasons aren't as bad as us which will make ours more difficult.

I just think the fact that he has always been a mess with his mechanics and throwing motion, the fact that he takes some really big hits, and that he struggles reading defenses, combined with the fact that he is starting to suffer significant injuries, all add up to a giant No.

And with the right coach, he went to a superbowl and won a lot of games.. can't just talk about the bad things without bringing up the good.

Yep. Shurmur gets his one game, so that's what it is.

However, most former head coaches never get a 2nd chance ......and it seems less likely today that failed head coaches get a 2nd chance.

I think that a lot of potential head coaches are very careful in the jobs they take. Look at all of the assistants we had back out on interviews with us over the last couple of coaching searches. I think that these guys look at their odds of success here, and don't want to blow what could be their one chance on a team with such a horrible record of blowing out coaches within a year or 2. A bad team, I mean a really bad team, takes time to turn around. The mindset has to change, The attitude within the locker room has to change. Oh, and talent is almost certainly lacking. Then there is the problem of some of our best players being free agents, and some of those players may well want out because of all of the turmoil and chaos caused by ownership constantly blowing things up.

I understand that NFL assistants probably have a great deal of confidence in their abilities, but you still have to have a situation where you have a chance at success. I can be the best ditch digger of all time, but if I can only use a garden spade, and I am in competition against a guy with a backhoe, I have no chance of winning. What would lead a top candidate to select this job over all of the other openings? Nothing that I can see. These guys don't want to be hired only to be fired a year or 2 down the road. They want a chance to build the team in their vision, and to coach that team for a decade or more, competing for championships. This team has not shown the patience necessary to turn around the absolute mess this team has become. There will be players that do not fit. Remember when Pettine tried to fit Phil Taylor into his 3-4 defense? He was not a good fit, and was dumped for nothing. There will be players people think could be pretty good who will be dumped from this team, especially if we go with a coach with a vastly different offensive and/or defensive schemes. This will, probably even more than previous years, a real heavy duty tear down and rebuild. I could see guys like Joe Thomas, Greco, Haden, Hartline, Hawkins, and other veterans being moved out. Some might be traded, while others will just be cut.

In the event of a complete tear down, what assurance does a new head coach have that Haslam will be patient with the process? He certainly has not shown any patience whatsoever so far as owner of the Browns.

I just see us hiring another mid grade coordinator ... and struggling. I don;t see any top flight candidate giving this job serious consideration. I hope I'm wrong, but I can easily see us winding up with a B or C grade coordinator, and another restart in 2 yeas.

I see that we are interviewing Jerome Henderson today. He is the secondary coach with the Cowboys, and coached here under Mangini and Shurmur.

I think that he is a really interesting candidate, and very well could wind up being our guy. I like a lot of what I have heard about him.

I think the rule itself is ugly, leading to any AA candidate and everybody else wondering if he was only interviewed to satisfy the requirement.

I don't get this one. It's not like the Cowboys were doing well at DB. He's a Rob Ryan guy. We already got rid of him once. His contract is expiring and the Cowboys don't plan on resigning him.

The Cleveland Browns on Thursday interviewed Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach/offensive line coach Doug Marrone for the team’s head coach opening.

Marrone is the third candidate to be interviewed. Detroit defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase met with the search committee Wednesday.

Marrone met with the Browns’ five-person search committee, which includes owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown, chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta and Korn/Ferry International consultant Jed Hughes.

The epitome of why the rule is stupid is the year Garret and Frazier took over as interim coaches.

Both teams wanted to hire them after the season.

Minnesota hired Frazier. Dallas was required to interview a minority candidate before hiring the guy that was already the coach..

Its a good rule in thought, and maybe some guys (Tomlin for example) got the job because of it, but I think it needs to go.

Has Patricia ever been a HC at any level?

So, we fired a guy who had almost exactly the same qualifications as Patricia and it will almost certainly mean that we will blow-up the roster once again................and that is a good thing?

You guys are killing me. rofl

I need to edit this so y'all can have a better grasp of what I am talking about. I run a lot of the board's beliefs and statements by people who don't care about the Browns one way or another..........and they don't even believe me. They think I am making stuff up. brownie

I apologize for my statement coming across like that (it was not my intent at all), but when you have a rule like that... people will think Rooney Rule whenever an AA candidate is interviewed. I did in this case, and looking back I believe it is racist to do that. Maybe in my frustration over this whole fiasco I didn't think or use good judgment when I posted.

I think the Rooney rule itself is racist, as it requires an interview based on skin color. Any minority candidate that didn't get the job will wonder if he actually was under serious consideration.

Now my huge problem with Mrs. Haslem help select our coach has nothing to do with sexism.

I don't think you make stuff up, and I care about the Browns. It's simply my opinion. I think Patricia has proven to be good, and also think his mind set fits in with the new decision makers. Smart prople like dealing with other smart people.

Sources tell the Cleveland Plain Dealer that some Browns players are "concerned" about the possibility of Jaguars OL coach Doug Marrone replacing Mike Pettine.

Marrone earned a miserable reputation during his two years in Buffalo, something highlighted by the fact that he couldn't even get a coordinating job after quitting on his team following last season. Bills players openly celebrated his resignation, and derided him as having too much of a college mindset. However, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports Marrone is a big believer in analytics. The Browns are going all in on numbers this offseason. They'll have to decide if Marrone's apparent lack of human touch is worth it.

The same thing can could be said about Gase or Austin and Henderson hasn't even been a coordinator.

Looks like we can't afford to shop on the A list.

If your thinking Gruden or Cowher, if they wanted it they would be hired already.

Panthers DC Sean McDermott's interview for the Browns' head-coaching vacancy will take place on Sunday.

It was originally scheduled for Thursday. To date, the Browns are the only team known to express interest in Ron Rivera's defensive boss.

Before all of the firings went down.........I was quite clear that I did NOT want another unproven, up-and-comer to take Pet's place.

I said I would be all-in if we could somehow persuade Saban to take the job.

I said that if that didn't happen, we would be better off retaining Pet.

I still feel that way.

Tomlin probably got the interview because of the rule, but he got hired because he really impressed the Steelers organization with his preparation for the interview.

A brief search couldn't find anything supporting the story that the Bills players celebrated Marrone leaving, or that Browns players are concerned. Is this just some made up crap for a story?

That could be, but when I looked up "Bills players celebrating Marrone leaving", all I could come up with were players saying "good riddance" and whatnot because they were shocked that he quit, and felt that he deserted and disrespected them by quitting without telling them. There was no happiness or joy in their comments.

This is an excerpt from an article I link below. To be fair, there are several positive quotes from some players.

Here, Marrone doesn't have to score personality points. He's burrowed into his hole, coaching his linemen. He just needs success. He's no longer thinking about the players who bashed him after his departure.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If the Browns hire former Bills head coach Doug Marrone as their eighth head coach since 1999, they'll have to sell him to their players.

Word gets around in the NFL, and some of the Browns are concerned that Marrone -- who interviewed with the Browns on Thursday -- isn't a players' coach, sources told cleveland.com. The club has confirmed the session.

Some Browns players, in fact, might just decide they don't want to deal with it, unless the club can assure them that Marrone has changed.

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas has made it clear that he'll ask to be traded if he doesn't like the new coach, and Marrone's methods -- described by Bills players as more college-oriented than pro -- might not fit him. If Thomas asks out, center Alex Mack, who can opt of out his contract in March, would possibly bolt too.

That could have a ripple effect, with right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, set to be a free agent in March, possibly opting for greener pastures if his two Pro Bowl buddies leave.

Marrone, 51, interviewed with the Browns Thursday on the second day of their search. Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who was originally scheduled to interview with the Browns on Thursday, will now talk to them Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

On Wednesday, the Browns kicked off the hunt by interviewing Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. NFL Network's Rand Getlin reported that the Dolphins are making "a strong, potentially persuasive push'' for Gase, who's in Miami Thursday. He's also interviewed with the Eagles and has interest from the Giants.

The Browns will also interview Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson on Friday in Dallas, a source said, and both Bengals coordinators on Sunday: Hue Jackson on the offensive side and Paul Guenther on the defensive side. They will also interview Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Last year in training camp, defensive tackle Marcel Dareus described to NFL Network's Michael Silver what Marrone, currently Jaguars assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the Jaguars, was like.

When asked about the reaction when they received a text on New Year's Eve from Marrone that he was opting out of his contract, Dareus said "We celebrated a little harder.''

When asked if he was surprised, Dareus said, "I'm surprised he didn't do it earlier. He seemed miserable. Things were tense. He was always anal and cared about little stupid things, micro-managed us.''

He added, "What difference does it make if I don't have team-issued socks for practice, and what does putting on a sweater in a cold meeting room have to do with winning?''

Inside linebacker Preston Brown told The Buffalo News that Marrone, who spent four seasons as head coach of Syracuse before he joined the Bills, was too "college-y. Coming from Syracuse, he kind of controlled guys instead of letting us be grown men and do what we've got to do."

Marrone, whose players felt he quit on them when he left the team in the midst of the Bills' ownership change after the 2014 season, also interviewed with the Browns after the 2012 season, but opted to take the Bills job instead. The Browns hired Rob Chudzinski, and fired him after one season.

The Browns made Adam Gase their first head coaching interview, which was significant. They interviewed him Wednesday.

Marrone went 15-17 in 2013-14 with the Bills, including a 9-7 mark last year. Former Browns coach Mike Pettine was Marrone's defensive coordinator in 2013, leading the unit to a league-high 57 sacks and a top 10 finish. The defense also led the NFL in opponent completion percentage, finished second with 23 interceptions and third in opponent quarterback rating.

Offensively, Marrone led an offense that finished first in the AFC and second in the NFL in rushing (144.2 avg.). It also led the NFL with 95.5 percent efficiency in the red zone. Rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel started 10 games and set team rookie records for passing touchdowns (11) and completions (180).

The Bills had three different players with 60 receptions in 2014 for the first time in team history (Fred Jackson, 65; Sammy Watkins, 62; Robert Woods, 61) and the club produced six individual 100-yard receiving games. The Bills ranked sixth in the NFL in 2014 with a plus-seven turnover differential.

Marrone went 25-25 in his four seasons at Syracuse, turning around the program and guiding it to two straight bowl games.

Before that, he spent seven seasons an NFL assistant, including offensive coordinator of the Saints from 2006-08.

Quarterback Drew Brees won the NFL passing crown in 2006 (4,418) and 2008 (5,069) and became just the second quarterback in NFL history to surpass 5,000 passing yards. (Dan Marino, 1984). Brees eclipsed 4,000 passing yards and the offense posted more than 5,700 yards in each of Marrone's three seasons there. The Saints established a team record with an NFL-best 6,264 yards of offense in 2006, 5,780 in 2007 (4th in the NFL) and led the NFL again in 2008 with 6,571 yards.

From 2002-05, Marrone served as Jets offensive line coach, during which time they made the playoffs twice. In 2004, the Jets produced the NFL's third-best rushing offense (149.3 avg.) and Curtis Martin led the NFL with 1,697 rushing yards. In an interview with espn.com in October, Marrone refused to elaborate on why he left the Bills, saying he'll wait until he's retired to reveal that information.

"It's a decision I made for me and my family," Marrone said. "It was the best decision for me."

He also said it's a misconception that he felt he had the Jets job locked up. The Jets hired Todd Bowles instead.

But respected former NFL executives such as Bill Polian and Charlie Casserly are still high on him.

"I think Doug deserves to be a head coach in the NFL,'' Casserly told ESPN. "I'd hire him in a minute."

Marrone went 9-7 without a QB and Rex Ryan took te same team backwards with a surprisingly good QB. Marrone isn't my first choice (I don't think), but he is a pro who knows what he is doing. I give the sniping from ex-players little credence.
