Thursday, January 7, 2016 Scene & Heard Infighting Defined the Cleveland Browns Last Season and Looms as Concern With New Power Structure Posted By Kevin Jones on Thu, Jan 7, 2016 at 4:07 PM
I can admit I’m curious about the Browns’ attempt to rocket-launch themselves out of the black hole that has swallowed the football existence of the city of Cleveland.
I can also say that bringing in Paul DePodesta from the Mets and elevating Sashi Brown and placing them at the top of the Browns’ organizational chart and involving them in strategic football decisions and talent evaluation, while interesting, presents a culture clash scenario. It’s easy to see how their philosophies would be met with resistance from traditional general managers and NFL coaches, who walk and operate with a bravado that makes them who they are. I'd also say I'm ready to call owner Jimmy Haslam gullible and the new executives naive if they think the resistance won't be strong.
Those disagreements already played out before sweeping changes were made in Berea.
According to a top level Browns source, the in-fighting last season was much more Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine vs. Sashi Brown and Alec Scheiner than it was Farmer vs. Pettine, though those two certainly had their problems that boiled over to the field. (“The perpetual in-fighting was definitely a big reason for all the losing,” one assistant coach texted me recently.)
The source said Farmer and Pettine were rarely willing to admit defeat when Brown and Scheiner had data proving some of their decisions were either off base or inconsistent.
Haslam became enamored with Brown’s intellect in these clashes, so in turn, he handed the 39-year-old the keys to his football franchise and in doing so, may have already clipped the wings of whoever will be the newly appointed head coach and general manager.
The question isn’t how much the Browns will employ analytics – undoubtedly it’ll be the crux of their operation. The real question is how the new power structure can balance running the show while not alienating whatever coach and GM end up beneath them.
What I learned from my time working for the Browns in Berea was this: Football coaches are fiercely protective organisms who do not function well when people in suits tell them how to do their job. They’re grinders who work from 6 a.m. to midnight. They dissect film like science and they want to be left alone, locked away in their meeting rooms to dictate the identity of their football team. Call the coaching community stubborn and backward-thinking all you want; this is just how they behave.
And when they’re pissed off about something going on with personnel or some soon-to-come mathematical theory that tells them how they should operate, they’ll wear it hard on their sleeve – or worse, they’ll leak things to the media. Imagine, for instance, how football-lifer running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery might react. He, like others, might see how analytics would be of use, but might also see how the front office is undercutting his skill set.
Or take current Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, a head coaching candidate around the league, who had this to say about analytics in November: “I trust my eyes. I trust my eyes, OK? I watch the tape. I watch a lot of tape and I trust what my eyes tell me. So I don’t need a freaking piece of paper with a bunch of numbers on there to tell me something my eyes can see. I mean, not to get pissed off, but that whole thing of looking at a piece of paper and telling you how to call a football game is a freaking joke in my opinion. That’s why I watch tape. Half the stuff on that paper, you can sort those stats out any way you want to. But I’m sticking by eyes. It’s worked OK for me so far.”
Of course, the coming head coach and GM hires might be made based on who will be onboard with DePodesta and Brown’s philosophy. It has worked in baseball with the Chicago Cubs, for instance, where manager Joe Maddon has taken a back seat to President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein, but both were already established names with world championships attached to their resumes. It’s just hard to imagine this untried Browns brass unearthing the next fearless leader like Mike Tomlin or John Harbaugh, coaches who were instantly successful when implementing their own style. Are the Browns truly searching for a candidate like that, or more for someone who would be willing to uproot their football belief system and take a leap of faith? Or someone with an inkling already who wants to fully jump in?
Brown’s a smooth operator, and people inside the facility adore his demeanor and likability. In his dealings with Pettine and Farmer he rightfully scolded the pair for their defensive scheme and signing over-the-hill free agents. That may sound good, but it remains to be seen how the 53-man roster will look under his supervision. At the very least, there’s no way he can be a worse talent evaluator than Farmer.
The good news is that Brown and DePodesta will transform the roster. There’s no way their approach will allow Josh McCown to remain the starting quarterback and the pair will have enough sense between them to cut bait with both Billy Manziel and Sleepy Gilbert. And while it would sting to see them go, future Hall of Famer Joe Thomas and Karlos Dansby will be probably viewed as depreciating assets. They might even ask Joe Haden to restructure his contract.
The important thing for this approach to work is for everyone to sing in harmony. But instead of simplifying their football operation after a year of cancerous in-fighting, the Browns have added additional layers of power, which will categorically make it trickier for everyone to get on the same page, and as is always the case in Berea, get along. Some teams might get the benefit of the doubt in this situation. The last decade-plus for the Browns gives us no such reason to believe.

There is no question that there will be speed bumps as they go down this "uncharted path". But from what I've read to date, I believe the personality Of Sashi Brown will ease some of the learning curve. It will be very interesting to see how the process functions with the HC reporting to the owner while SB has full control over the personnel side. How SB and the HC co-exist will be the key to success (or failure)...

It will depend on their approach to it. If they use it as a way to look for patterns to make watching the video more efficient or to pick up on things that don't show up easily in video then it could be a real asset. If they try to have it be the main factor in determining things then we are flat out doomed because football has way too many variables that are not tracked by numbers or numbers are given but why you have those numbers can be wildly different from one event to the next but its till only recorded one way..

Did this guy Jones get fired?
A lot of assumption on how things will be run. As for the comments of the Bucs new HC. Maybe the way WE WILL use analytic is to garnish enough info that the numbers tell them to then go to the football people and state...pull all the film you got on this guy and tell us what your eyes see?
Ya think that is more how this would be used then the way the writer is trying to depict that our evaluations are strictly going to be done with Math equations. Sounds like a bitter employee or ex employee for that matter.

If they get the right guys that buy into the metrics and understands they are a just another tool in the tool box, that could work. I just can't think of one experienced HC candidate that I think would buy in. It's not going to be a Cowher or Saban or someone of that caliber. This is probably going to be a young guy like maybe Gase, But I expect him to go a team that has some weapons already. (my guess is Tampa or Tenn) I don't think Lovie Smith would look at it either for that matter. It's going to take a special kinda thinking for a coach to accept this I think.

Thanks for the article. Very informative. It's amazing the difference between Jones' articles when he was paid to say positive things about the Browns and the articles when he can be honest. So there were problems between Sashi/Alec vs Famer/Pettine. How is that going to change w/the new GM/coach? Once again, I think analytics are a tool. I don't think they can be used as an end-all in football. Football is a very different game than baseball. Football requires way more teamwork, sacrificing, effort, will, selflessness, toughness, etc than baseball, which is much more a game of one-on-one match-ups. I really don't see how giving the power to a bunch of suits is going to be a good thing. Sashi, Moneyball, Alec, and both Haslams are not football people, yet they will be making the decisions for the guys who are actually football people.

It will likely be a younger guy whose thinking is "modern", progressive, and who sees the advantages that analytics can offer. It is difficult to see an "old school" guy accepting the position...

I see the analytics guys saying, here are these numbers. They say the steelers do this in that situation 80% of the time. Use your football knowledge to figure out a way to stop it.

How is that going to change w/the new GM/coach?
That's why Jimmy has already announced Sashi as the man with the final say in the 53. We will avoid these conflicts in the future because it's already been decided who decides. However, I also find it interesting that with all this, Jimmy did say in his presser when asked about Johnny that the next GM/HC will decide what to do with him. So what does that mean? Does analytics say we keep him? Or is he saying the QB position is up to the coach?

Thanks for the article. Very informative. It's amazing the difference between Jones' articles when he was paid to say positive things about the Browns and the articles when he can be honest.
So there were problems between Sashi/Alec vs Famer/Pettine. How is that going to change w/the new GM/coach? vers...I've said that the most experienced and best coaching candidates will very likely take a pass on the HC job in Cleveland.
That said, there will be 2nd tier candidates, who will say whatever they have to, to get the job.
The suits have to know this going in, that the best and most experienced coaching candidates will not be interested in coaching in Cleveland due to the management structure.
So, what kind of coach are they looking for...someone willing to go along with the scheme. Some young coordinator type who is good at selling himself. Once again, I think analytics are a tool. I don't think they can be used as an end-all in football. Football is a very different game than baseball. Football requires way more teamwork, sacrificing, effort, will, selflessness, toughness, etc than baseball, which is much more a game of one-on-one match-ups. vers...again, I agree..that analytics is a tool that can be used for certain situations. This is the scary part..we don't know how the Browns plan to use this tool.
Dpod is a damn good talker and I have little doubt, Haslam was impressed with the guy's ability to sell. But, what are the Browns going to use his analytics for?
...to help the coaches indentify weaknesses in the opponents offensive and defensive units? In support of the coaching staff?
...or do the Browns plan to use analytics to determine if the salary a player is being paid fits the value their analytic formulas?
...if the Browns use analytics to shape their roster, to pick their players, that "will be a disaster", IMO. Don't ask me how they would use analytics to determine who should be on the roster, because I don't know all the ways analytics can be used.
But I know this, there are 22 starters and probably another 10 players who specialize depending on what down it is. There are special teams players too. Comparing how and what DePod used analytics for in baseball where there were 9 players on the field...compared to football where nearly every one on the 53 man roster is used for something...I see no way that analytics can or should be used to determine the 53 man roster.
Those who are already convinced that DePd is not going use analytics to determine the 53 man roster forget...DePod was a GM in baseball, in charge of shaping the roster.
IMO, if Haslam is going to allow DePod to use analytics to help make personnel moves, who should be on the 53...it is going to lead to a huge mess. I really don't see how giving the power to a bunch of suits is going to be a good thing. Sashi, Moneyball, Alec, and both Haslams are not football people, yet they will be making the decisions for the guys who are actually football people. vers...I strongly AGREE!

Honest? maybe, maybe not.
He was Dishonest pretty much when he worked for the Browns media in your interpretation. Now he has quit because he is bitter about the Firings of Pettine n Farmer - if he wrote dishonestly before why not now as well?
I think there was a lot more fighting within the entire structure. Pettine...Farmer...Scheiner and his people?
I think there was mistrust and clashes all over - The promotion and Hire is said to be done to get the organization on the same page.
Jones feels loyal to the football people just fired.
And yet we know there was major conflicts of how the team was to evolve between Pettine's beliefs and Farmer's.
Agree with the guy. But not everyone who writes articles that agree with your opinion are now HONEST and those who write against your opinion possibly Dishonest.
If the guy lied when he wrote...he has no morals in his writing. So now he is being honest. I don't trust liars period. If they are paid to lie...Now they are off the books I'm to think he is being honest...instead of bitter.

In other words.......we are going to hire another guy who hasn't proven squat. Guys who are proven are either already employed or retired. Cower and Gruden aren't coming out of retirement. Sabin? he is a great college coach but is that because of his coaching or his recruiting? Are his player just that much better than everyone else or are his players that much better than other college teams because of his coaching? Regardless, he is a proven college coach but failed as an NFL HC. I would love Coughlin if he could be convinced to come here. But I doubt that. Do you want Billick? Who else do you have to offer as a proven guy for us to consider?

We could have made the same changes and kept Pet as the HC they are now going to search for. I agree that would have worked.
It might have even worked if we kept Farmer and let him get in the Search for HC committee...although it not being structured that way.
But yeah I would have liked it the way you said.
This necessary organizational change in structure with the next step to hire the HC - but instead just keep PET and Staff. Keep with the structure - Pet sits with committee and they search for a Strong Personnel guy to carry on as GM that is chosen by Pet and others.
Makes sense and brings it a lot more stability.
Alas we did not do that. Can't turn back the clock - its done. I'm not there to explain why we did it that way. All I can say is the hire for HC is the key in all of this!!! Man I hope its Patricia.

Jester I know you know your stuff. Forgive me if I get a little testy, but I think we need to accept some facts as we go forward. Billick is a hater. He is a uncompromising, unabashed Browns hater. He has been open in his biased hatred since he worked as Bill Walsh's minion back in the 80's. Since he wrote Walsh's book. He has never tried to hide it. True, his open hatred of us has more to do with Paul Brown than us per se, but .... he's not the answer. He has almost always gone on record with statements that are in our worst interest. When you look at media bozos who have disrespected us for no apparent reason, billick tops the list. (IMO)

I for one dont see how keeping Pet or Farmer wouldve been the right choice...I couldnt stand Pett's schemes or his short comings as a head coach...I just dont think he was very good and well...I guess whatever Haslam and company felt the same way. Farmer idk I didnt see what all the fuss was about and wouldve let him go to Miami...Ozzie Newsome I didnt see in him...and when I read his comments on wide receivers and how he valued the QB position...I thought it was going to get ugly and it did. I dont know who the heck we couldve hired but them 2 wasnt the ones I wanted....hopefully the next ones will be and we can go on a nice stretch of not firing everyone

I'm in the needed to go column when it comes to Pettine .. Now I think there is a place for analytic s in the FO and it sure couldn't hurt when it comes to the Draft ( lol ) .. But I am Old , old , old , old , old , old School concerning the 53 man roster .. The head Coach takes the heat for the win /loss column the most ! He knows his players and what he has and needs more than anyone else ! Once the FO and GM have 80 players in Camp ; Back off ..

Next! Do you understand the NFL Combine? They measure, weigh, & time players in all sorts of ways so they can get a better idea of who to Draft, right? It's nothing more than that, but with a whole LOT more information available.
Browns is the Browns

How is it that you guys aren't getting that I think we should have kept Pet? How is that so confusing? I was in the "I prefer to keep Pettine" crowd. But regardless of how we feel about that decision it's been made and we need to move on. No sense crying over spilled milk. Petting was fired and we need to hire someone new. You may want a previously successful HC to come in and take things over. I think we would all love that but unfortunately I don't see one available that would be a good choice for us.

Here's the problem I have with this whole set up ....
Sashi will be the one on charge of the 53 man roster, free agency, trades, and the draft. The GM will be placed under him in the organization. Brown will report directly to Jimmy Haslam.
DePodesta was brought in as an analytics guy. He is not in the organizational chart under Sashi Brown, but instead reports directly to Haslam. Wouldn't it make more sense for all of this data go directly to Brown as a chain of command type arrangement, rather than to go over his head, to the owner?
Then we have the coach, who will be hired, in part, by Brown. (and I have heard that DePodesta may also be in the room with candidates) However, the coach does not report to Sashi Brown, but rather directly to Jimmy Haslam.
So all of this "stuff" is heading up to Haslam, from Brown, from Depodesta, and from the head coach. Is it all going to go to Haslam, with him making the decision on how and what is used, or are the football people involved ..... somehow?
This looks to me like Haslam has planted himself right in the top of the football operations chart ..... which is a problem if you ask me. Sure Haslam is the owner, and will always have the final word on anything he wants to .... but his track record is not one of taking in a lot of information and making sound football decisions with it.
It just seems to me that if you have a guy in charge of football, that all of this stuff should go through him. Instead of having all of these "co-equals" floating around, it would seem to me to have a more direct chain of command would be indicated. As it stands, it seems like this arrangement is even more convoluted than the previous ones.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.

So, Scheiner/Brown versus Pettine/Farmer and then within that, Pettine (and the coaching staff) versus Farmer (and the scouting staff).
Sounds like a fun place to work.

Regardless, he is a proven college coach but failed as an NFL HC.
I don't think Saban's tenure in the NFL necessarily paints him as a failure. You're absolutely right. It obviously paints him as a quitter.

Sabin? he is a great college coach but is that because of his coaching or his recruiting? Are his player just that much better than everyone else or are his players that much better than other college teams because of his coaching? Regardless, he is a proven college coach but failed as an NFL HC.
Complete and utter bull. First off, he was a great college coach before Bama and LSU. He's been winning with inferior talent since Toledo. Second, he won with the Miami Dolphins. He coached that inferior talented team to a winning record and then they went 6-10 after Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemmons played the majority of the season. The year after he resigned, the Dolphins went 1-15. He was a perfectly fine HC. Possibly even good. He was certainly not failed.

Well you didn't like Pet so of course it was not an avenue that you would desire. I think my point is that we could have had both continuity and an organizational redo at the same time.
As for Farmer one thing - What everyone keeps quoting on WRs. My opinion is WRs are way way over rated. You need them but still over rated.
Farmer maybe he said it with a Ploy involved. What if he was targeting Sammy Watkins and/or Odell Beckham so he said what he was quoted???
But as stated the way this was formatted its the HC as the BMIC with the football side. I was just bringing it up that Both didn't have to go to make the same dynamic changes we are doing now with the organization.
jmho again the key is the HC Hire.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I am not disputing his success as a college coach. But his tenure as a HC in the NFL cannot be labeled a success. Could he be a success in the NFL? Yes, he could but I was specifically addressing the idea of finding a proven HC. And he is definitely not a proven NFL HC. Nothing against Sabin. Same with Urban Meyer. Great college HC. Could be a great NFL HC but he isn't a proven successful NFL HC.

Agree
Saban is a winner.
Sometimes I think we are simply allergic to winners.
When we almost hooked Jim Harbaugh, many posters went after me. They were happy he didn't come here. I was literally cussed at when I proposed he was worth a few draft picks.
Clearly what the Browns need is a "project" with "upside"
Yea, that's the ticket.
