Scouting Report:

"Throughout the season, the “Meet the Prospect” series will highlight an underrated senior NFL prospect with a scouting report, interview and glimpse at what NFL scouts think of the player.

Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State, rSr. (6-5, 231, 4.84, #11)

The Scouting Report
Similar to Ben Roethlisberger when he was in high school, Wentz moved from wide receiver to quarterback as a senior so he went widely under-recruited, which worked out for North Dakota State. After redshirting in 2011, he spent the next two seasons as the back-up behind Brock Jensen before becoming the Bison starter in 2014 as a junior, setting school records for pass attempts (358), completions (228) and passing yards (3,111). He also finished second on the team in rushing with 642 yards on the ground and helped lead NDSU to the FCS National Championship. Wentz started the first six games in 2015 as a senior, completing 63.7-percent of his passes with a 16-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. However, he suffered a wrist injury (Oct. 17) that required surgery and prematurely ended his senior season, although it's possible he returns for the FCS playoffs."
=====================================================

Spent the morning watching tape on Wentz. Really like what I have seen a lot. I don't often site comparisons but in this case I will. He does remind me of Big Ben.

Given where he came from and where he ended up in college he could go anywhere from late first to third round.

All that does not matter as far as his true ability. In his case if he would have gone a more traditional route you may not be talking about him as a non first round talent.

What I see:

Strong guy who is very competitive. First he has good arm slot and delivery with a quick release. Can make every throw on the field. Displays good balance. Will need to work on consistent footwork and lower body mechanics. Has the ability to extend plays similar to Ben with strength and athleticism. Very good accuracy and ball placement. Has the ability to read defenses and go to second and third level receivers. Still needs to master fine points like staring down receivers.

This guy may be the answer to a large problem. The first round problem of how to play it. I could see going Bosa and coming back to get Wentz in the late first (if necessary) or getting him in the second.

As the draft process plays out Wentz is going to rise.

I want to see him at the Sr Bowl, but I like what I've seen. He'll definitely have an adjustment period, though, and I doubt he'd be given a very good chance of success here. Maybe if we can trade down from the top and pick up an extra second rounder, I'd roll the dice at the top of the second.

I am very intrigued by Wentz. It will be interesting to see how the perception of him changes as he goes through the off-season process. His measurables are ideal and it seems like he is physically talented.

Bear in mind he's playing against DBs that are as fast as NFL defensive linemen and behind the best OL in the fcs .

Which has me wondering if Joe Haeg might not be someone to target in the 3rd/4th round.

Also, NDSU went 4-2 with Wentz as their starter and have gone 8-0 since he was injured and are about to play for the national title. They played Montana twice and scored the same amount of points with him as without him.

The only thing I look at is the player and how he plays.

The point about his competition is valid just as it was with Big Ben, Flacco, and Garoppolo.

From what I have seen I don't see much separation between him and Lynch. Yet, Lynch is being mentioned as the first QB off the board with many mocks having him going to the Browns.

We shall see as the process rolls along. Because of the way Wentz came to college, the conference he played in and his injuries he has less exposure.

I see a lot of potential for a guy who is under the radar.

I hope Johnny proves himself and we go in another direction. WE DESPERATELY NEED SOME IMPACT PLAYERS and I am tired of taking projects at the qb position.

We had a chance w/Teddy and Carr. We blew it. Let's not compound the problem.

If we keep Manziel and Wentz has a solid, unanimous high 2nd round rating come draft time, I'd be all for it.

Really curious about Wentz.

I will be watching him closely at during Senior Bowl week.

Just watched the first half of the championship game.

Wentz is every bit as good as Lynch or Goff.

Love his attitude and demeanor on the field. You can tell the guy is the leader of the team. His presence and command is impressive.

He is big, tough, athletic, with a top notch arm, and can run.

I would love to get this guy. He has all the things you can work with and develop.

Knew he just threw a bad int, but his effort in attempting to get the guy down was commendable. Not only did he force the cut back, although he went down really ugly, he then got up and took an angle to get him down before the endzone and ended up getting into a shoving match with a LB down there. I like how he's playing with a chip on his shoulder, but will it stop once he hits the NFL?

He is the the best QB in this draft. I like Paxton has the most upside but Weintz has everything u want in a QB except playing against top tier defenses. I would have no problem drafting him thewith that 32nd pick. There just isnt any Qb i really want to give a first for.

I agree that this draft is going to come down to Goff or Wentz. I'd be fine with us drafting either one as I think they both have the tools to be successful in the NFL.

Wentz you might want to give him a year behind McCown (or at least part of the year) depending on how he adjusts to the jump in competition but in the long run he could very well be the best of the bunch.

Here's the problem Mourg. Goff is going to be a top 5 pick. Nobody would bat an eye at us taking him at #2. I think Lynch will go in the top 12-15, probably top 10. Wentz, similar to Roethlisberger and Flacco coming from small schools, is going to end up somewhere in that 12-20 range. Especially after more people get to watch him at the Senior Bowl and Pro Days, he's going to be a first round QB.

So, if we decide Wentz is our guy over Goff...I don't think he'll be there at #32 for us to take him so we're going to HAVE to take him at #2, similar to Jacksonville taking Bortles at #3, unless we plan on trading back/up somehow to get back into the teens.

Whomever we draft.

They better be ready to start right out of the gate.

Even if they're not.

We could probably trade down a bit. The problem is that it is rumored the Cowboys are looking for a QB to shelve for a year or two behind Romo, and Wentz might be the target. If we are convinced Wentz is the guy, just take him at #2 and be damned the projections.

I'd like Bosa and to find a QB for the future. I have always liked Dak Prescott. At this stage of his career, he reminds me a lot of Cam Newton.

Wentz may offer the perfect opportunity to trade down. Land somewhere around ten; get an xtra pick and come back and take Wentz around twenty.

The Senior Bowl will provide a good opportunity to scout Wentz over a weeks time. They can find out how quickly he can adapt to NFL concepts.

If you really look at what Wentz was doing in his offense at UND it is way closer to NFL concepts than what Lynch was running at Memphis. More huddle and under center along with play action and NFL type run plays.

In addition: Carson Wentz is smart. He is Academic All American.

"It's the highest NCAA Division I academic football award and it has Carson Wentz's name on it.

The Bison senior from Century is the Academic All-American of the Year and it covers all D-I schools, not just the FCS.

Characteristics like that are extremely important. Luck and Mariota came with the same type academic record.

I can only hold out the hope that the new regime has the presence of mind to really study Wentz.

Like I said, I don't mind a trade down to take him, but if he is the guy, I don't mind taking him at #2. The last thing we need is to try and get fancy and try to trade down and up, then lose him.

I don't think there is a qb in this draft even close to being worthy of a top 5 pick.

Wow, how timely. I was at a party last night at one of my neighbors places. At the party was a guy I know from the area who is a College Football fanatic. I mean he can site stats for anyone at the drop of a hat. Actually pretty impressive to remember all that stuff.

Anyway, I asked him, (he's a browns fan by the way) who would you go after as a QB in the draft. This is the guy he said would be the best from this draft class.

He went on to tell me and anyone within earshot why he felt that way. Very compelling argument.

I won't bore you with the details (mostly because I'll be damned if I can remember them all) but he made it sound like this guy is the answer.

FWIW.

I don't disagree, but then you know how that goes. My main point is if we find this guy, or any other for that matter the guy we want, I am no real big on trading down in the hopes we can trade back up.

This. How very Browns of us to finally be in position to get the guy we want, have an analytics group validate that he's the best guy, have leadership smart enough to make the decision to get him.....and then get cute playing the trading game and not get him at all.

Nothing is more important than QB. We don't have one. Spend all resources to evaluate Goff and Wentz and just take whichever one we like better at #2.

Edit - FWIW the more I watch and read about Wentz the more I like the kid. That's why I think he should be right up there with Goff as the top option.

Kind of ironic. Many on here are all upset over analytics, yet they apply them because they feel the value isn't there at #2 but would be fine at #15. Had the Pats drafted Brady in round 1 people would have been ticked that he could have been had in round 5.

Bottom line is if you get the right players, it doesn't matter how early or late you draft them. If you like a player who you know you can get at #2 but seriously doubt you can get at 32, do you draft him or just say "oh well"?

I don't mind a reach, especially if you keep getting the guys you think are going to be good players, which is what it is about.

This is the umpteenth time someone has said that people are upset over analytics. Who is upset about analytics?

I haven't bought into what The Haslams are selling, but I have repeatedly said that analytics are a tool. You know I loved Banner and it was Banner who brought analytics to Cleveland.

It's not analytics that upset us. Rather, it is that the Browns keep blowing things up and continue to have too many cooks in the kitchen.

The analytics will almost certainly tell you that that is a recipe for disaster.

The more I see of Wentz the more I like him. However, I don't want him the second draft pick. I'd rather we look at Bosa or Ragland first, someone to be an impact defensively or if we have to, someone to replace any of our o-lineman that bolt.

That being said, he'd be perfect at our first pick in the second.

I fear, as Peen said, that a team like the Cowboys or maybe event the Texans take him. I hope everyone is more enamored with Goff, or Conner and pass on Wentz.

Aside from the specter of having to fill an 0line void, we could use a solid WR in this draft as well.

I wouldn't want the kid running for his life or throwing to midgets all year long.

Some notes on Wentz:

Pros:
Size
Mobile, he is every bit as mobile and big as Paxton Lynch.
Arm Strength/release – he has “flick of the wrist” motion which I love. Ball gets out and downfield quickly.
Wide base, good looking footwork.

Cons:
Rarely takes snaps under center and when he did it was to run mostly bubble screens.
Despite not being a runner, operated out of read option offense.
Accuracy on touch throws was a consistent issue on film, I struggle to find any good touch throws.
Pressure completely derails his accuracy. (pressure was rare given then system and competition).
Does not throw with anticipation of routes. The only route where he even attempts to throw with anticipation are the curl routes.
Throws into coverage more than desired.
Competition, Competition, Competition. The best team he played was UNI.

This is just what I see, but I see a guy with a pretty good arm, good size for the NFL. Unfortunately he is a project, he doesn’t manipulate the field with his eyes, he doesn’t throw with anticipation, his accuracy is not good. I lost track on how many times he missed on deep routes and touch throws.

If I had to grade him I’d give him a 4th round grade. He is a project, nice arm, good mobility, but he is a multi year project and likely a backup QB in the NFL.

That's what I've been saying. First game of the season Tyrone Holmes beat the crap out of their OL and he looked very average. He's an FCS QB who didn't elevate the level of his team's play. Why is he an NFL QB? Let alone a first rounder.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "mobile", but he's nowhere near the running threat that Lynch is. Gotta remember those FCS players are guys that are going to be playing basketball at the Y in a couple years he's moving against.

Yeah you're probably right on that one. He is mobile, but would definitely not be at the next level.

From a QB standpoint an NFL comparison would be AJ McCaron IMO.

Interesting article:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...irst-qb-drafted
=======================================================

All college quarterbacks are projects. You can not look at a 21 year old college player and believe that he is a finished product. You have to look at them and determine does he have the goods to work with and develop. What will the guy look like at 24 after getting time in the NFL?

Wentz like Flacco and Big Ben are coming from schools that play in an inferior conference. You have to judge them on potential.

The Andrew Luck type guys are rare.

Wentz has many of the things you look for. In my opinion he is a guy I would take a risk on.

Wentz reminds me a little bit of Philip Rivers - he has that sort of funky release, like a dart thrower.

I'm not wishing, bro. I know it won't happen.

I just think that there is NOT one qb in this draft worthy of a top 5 pick.

Heck, I would NOT draft any of them in the top half of round one. This draft class reminds me of the EJ Manuel, Gino Smith draft class.

No QB worthy of a top 15 pick. I would be hard pressed to take any before that 32nd pick.
