The whole problem I have with the hit is Shazier led with the crown of his helmet and made contact with the helmet of the Cincy player. That should be a penalty every time, or am I mistaken about the rules? I was pretty sure leading with the the crown and hitting another player in the head was a penalty regardless of him being a runner.

Quote:
It was an illegal hit with the crown of the helmet. Bernard was a reciever in that situation, if any other WR were to take a hit like that right after catching the ball it's a flag %100 of the time no questions asked.

no arguments with either of you Dawgs.
Like I said in my original post:

I despise them both, if I had my wish they both lose the game but somebody has to move on. I will just have to listen to steeler fans troll on social media for another week till they get eliminated next week. Then they will squeal like stuck pigs about how everyone is haters and jealous of their six rangs. I don't really have anything against the steeler players but the fans have poisoned me to the point that I root for their demise everytime they take the field.

My ideal situation would have been that both teams were disqualified but that wouldn't happen so me being a lot closer to Cincy then Pittsburgh and having to put up with the obnoxious Bengal fans I rooted for Pitt. Hopefully they will lose next week though.

I hear ya, I am closer to Pittsburgh and my wife's family is just across the river from Wheeling WV so when I go there I'm well behind enemy lines. There's a couple loyal dogs down there who unabashedly were their colors amidst a sea of toothless black and gold, I take my hat off to them. I got a couple friends who are pretty cool steeler fans but man most of them are as obnoxious as can be, they are still bashing the browns even though they never made the playoffs. I swear they get more pleasure out of bad mouthing other fans than their own teams success, they are the worst. thumbsdown

As much as I dislike Joey Porter, there's NO WAY he's smart enough to know what would have happened. Nobody would.

If Pacman kept his head, he would have been flagged and the Steelers would have had to run another play or two to get closer. Who knows.

Funny to see Steeler fans crying about dirty hits. The irony.
Porter had no business being out there, the penalty's should have at least offset. Bunch of cry babies.

Yeah, I agree, I have been tweeting about this.

They have quite possibly one of the dirtiest players of all time, a guy they made the "Crown of your helmet" rule for in Harrison.

Well I was pleased to see the Bengals keep their futility streak alive with no playoff win. Steelers now they have to keep their part of the bargain and get destroyed by the Broncos wink - I must of nodded off cause I don't remember the Bernard hit...my son was livid about it though especially after the Burfect penalty.

I have him convinced that the Steelers get preferential treatment...lol laugh Half the NFL fans feel that way also.

Pittsburgh fans crying about the illegal hit is the definition of irony. I challenge anyone to watch the Denver/Pitt game this weekend and see how many illegal hits you see from the Pitts defense. Almost every single play they lead with their helmet or if someone wraps a RB or WR up watch the next person that hits the offensive player... 9 times out of 10 they are leading with the crown of their helmet. Their defense is the dirtiest thugs in the league and they are a representation of their coaches. Porter and Tomlin are punks.

Check out that class on Joey Porter's face. Coach 'em up, Joey!

also: Steelers Gave Joey Porter the Game Ball After Miracle Win Against Bengals

http://thebiglead.com/2016/01/11/joey-porter-game-ball-bengals-steelers/

The Bengals unraveled in the final minute at home against the Steelers Saturday night, with two 15-yard penalties moving Pittsburgh up 30 yards to make the game-winning field goal.

One was on Vontaze Burfict for this elbow against defenseless Antonio Brown. The other was on Pacman Jones for shoving Joey Porter – a Pittsburgh assistant coach. The Steelers claim Porter was on the field to help the injured Brown; the Bengals players say he was talking trash.

It worked. Jones – who claims Brown was ‘faking’ – ended up shoving Porter, and boom, the Bengals were done.

Joey Porter got the game ball. PHENOMENAL.

Reporters claim Porter will be fined, but who cares?

It wasn't a flag when the Steelers did it.

Mike Carey explained it very well. Giovanni had already secured the pass, turned upfield and 'made a football move before Shazier made contact. At that point, GB was a runner, and the rules are different in that case. That was enough to allow the refs to keep the flags in their pockets. (Clemmy side note: imo, they could have tossed the yellow for Shazier's use of the helmet's crown, but that's a subject for another post...)

Burfict used his shoulder, but it was on a defenseless WR who didn't have possession of the ball.

...and therein lies the difference.

Disagree.

Shazier initiated contact with the crown of his helmet which is illegal. Bernard was outside the tackle box and more than 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Should have penalized for the hit.

Burfict got penalized correctly. Jones got penalized correctly. Porter SHOULD have been penalized IF the officials did not grant him permission to be on the field. That is in the rules also.

I had heard Porter got the game ball. I thought it was a joke.

Stay classy, Pitt. Stay classy.

I'll add it's a lot easier to "stay classy" when you have help beyond the team to make sure things go in your favor.

The way I heard it explained is that it was a football move that was the difference.

Also it was with the crown of the head which is in the rules but is not called once this season when dealing with RBs in a football move. If they have been calling that all year the flag could have been expected but that is one thing they have left alone even though there are rules that were put in place (Trent Richardson rule) it just hasn't been enforced all season they weren't going to start with a playoff game.

jwhat I heard. Mike Golic this a.m.

That hit summarized why Burfict went undrafted. Very talented player, but went undrafted because of idiotic plays and questionable character.

I really like this streak he's developed consisting of losing the game for the Bengals in the fourth quarter. I hope he takes this streak into next season.

I won't even ask you to re-read my original post, which you quoted. Instead, I'll do all the work for you:

It's right there in your quote of me... so how are we in disagreement? I mentioned the crown just like you. That they didn't throw the flag for Unnec Rough WASN'T the point of my answer. My point was to review Mike Carey's explanation.

Reading is fundamental.
But mostly mental.

I live in the lower part of Ohio and delighted with their loss given the way they blew it.

Eyewitness number one: With that loss, two events transpired. My noxious Bengali friends got much quieter. The other? Apparently about 90% of their colors and gear evaporated, disappeared into thin air.

It is a beautiful thang! The Streak lives on . . . .

I get the first two............the 3rd one is just typical whiny crap by a Brown's fan. I watched the Steelers get absolutely hosed by the refs against Seattle earlier this year.

I knew he was a repeat offender and that is why I thought he would get one game. I just didn't think he would get three.

We've had 15 losing seasons out of 17 bro.

We all earned the right to cry and come up with conspiracies about the NFL.

SI.com's Peter King writes letter of caution to NFL players
Bryan DeArdo - Jan 12, 9:38 AM 10

In wake of the chaos that ensued in the Steelers-Bengals Wild Card game, SI.com's Peter King issued a memo to the NFL's players.

King, who has been covering the NFL since 1980, wrote the following letter to the NFL's players, advising them to take care of a game that's at a pivotal crossroads:

Dear Players,

On Saturday night, the NFL scheduled a major television event for the marquee game of the first playoff weekend. A rivalry game, with intense feelings between players and cities, featuring one of the great franchises in American sports, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers at the division-champion Bengals was the most anticipated game of the weekend, and the CBS audience proved it. At the height of the telecast, between 10 and 11 p.m., some 27.5 million people were tuned into the game. The combined TV audience for the other major-network programming at that time was 6.98 million viewers.

So, as this game reached its climax, four out of every five major-network viewers were watching the NFL game. It was exactly the magnet the NFL had in mind when they booked this game for prime time.

This is what America—families watching together, fathers, mothers and children, teens, college kids, everyone else along the football spectrum, all important consumers of your game—saw in the last 17 minutes of this game:

• Pittsburgh linebacker Ryan Shazier ramming Cincinnati running back Gio Bernard with the crown of his helmet, something that year after year, practice after practice, players have been trained and warned not to do. For minutes, Bernard lay motionless on the ground.

• Cincinnati running back Jeremy Hill running on the field and trying to fight or somehow challenge four different Steelers while Bernard lay injured.

• Cincinnati linebacker Vontaze Burfict sacking Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Later, one angle showed Burfict trying to drive a knee into the injured shoulder of Roethlisberger.

• Burfict, leading with his shoulder, ramming defenseless Steelers receiver Antonio Brown in the helmet after an exposed Brown reached for a pass, causing Brown’s body to go limp and his head to jerk uncontrollably, the way an unconscious person’s body would react.

• Steelers linebacker coach Joey Porter in the middle of the field where he shouldn’t have been (assistant coaches are not allowed on the field during the game) jawing with assorted Bengals until Cincinnati’s Adam Jones burst past an official to challenge Porter. This contact with an official caused Jones to be flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, moving Pittsburgh in position for the winning field goal. Porter smiled. One Steeler jumped with glee at the flag. Soon, the Steelers kicked the winner and won 18-16.

This is what the Steelers and Bengals showed 27 million Americans about the great game of professional football. Your game. The game your coaches—from youth ball up to the NFL—have taught you to play fairly.

This was the lesson from the climax of this playoff game: Stop at nothing to win, even if it means concussing the opposition. Taunt your foes. Hit them with the crown of your helmet. Sneak onto the field to induce them into a penalty.

Anything to win the game.

Demean yourselves. Shame your former coaches and your parents. Show them if you win the game, it’s all good. All’s fair in love and football.

If you haven’t noticed, there’s a tornado on the outside of your profession. Parents who grew up loving the game are agonizing about whether they’ll let their children play football. A movie, “Concussion,” is out, and Will Smith plays a doctor warning America about the long-term, inescapable dangers of the sport. Have you seen it? You should. I’ve seen it twice, and I’d go again. You should know what your football ancestors put up with to play the game, and what many of you face if you continue to play.

You know what I was thinking when I watched the disgusting hit of Burfict on Brown? I have no idea what the short-term impact of that hit will be, but I know there’s a good chance the effects will be seen on Brown’s brain when he’s 50 or 60 or 70. Or 40. I wondered why, after the ugly and filthy Odell Beckham Jr. hit on Josh Norman a few weeks ago, when Beckham took a running start and battering-rammed his head into Norman’s head, this keep happening.

It shouldn’t, but it does. It’s shameful, but it continues. It could someday kill the game, but your peers, few though they may be, keep playing this way.

I am writing to issue this plea: Take care of yourselves. Take care of your game.

Late in the season, late in the vital Bengals-Broncos game, Cincinnati’s Reggie Nelson bore down on Denver tight end Owen Daniels as Daniels tried to secure a pass. Nelson could have hit Daniels in the head or knees, but in a split second, he took care to hit Daniels in the upper torso. A very hard hit, but the right hit. I talked to Nelson. One of the things he said to me: “We have to take care of ourselves. We’re one big family out there on the field.”

Too many times you don’t look like a family. You look like you want to physically harm the men on the other side of the line. That has to end. Forget about today. Think of all the people who look at games like Steelers-Bengals and say it’s a big reason why football is a dinosaur, and our kids should be playing sports with very little contact. More games like this, and Congress will get involved. And I would be happy if Washington does, because games like that one show you’re not capable of looking out for the common good.

I hope you were glad to see the NFL on Monday night suspend Burfict for the first three games of next season. The hit on Brown was part of it. If you didn’t see the bigger reason, you missed Burfict’s incredibly brutal hit on Baltimore rookie Maxx Williams. On the other side of the field, away from the play, Williams went out for a pass and was looking back at the quarterback when Burfict blew up the unsuspecting Williams with a helmet-to-helmet hit that left the Raven prone on the ground.

I urge you to just say no to plays like that, to 17-minute periods of game like Saturday night’s. Take control of your game again.
If you have a chance Friday night, watch a re-airing of the lost tapes of Super Bowl I. A very cool TV show, showing the first Super Bowl, played 49 years ago this month. In the show, you’ll hear legendary coach Vince Lombardi exhort his team to show the country just what a great game football is. “I want you to be proud of your profession,” Lombardi said. “It’s a great profession. You be proud of this game. You can do a great deal for football today, a great deal for all the players in this league and everyone else.”

You can do a great deal for this game too. To start: Keep the game clean. Insist on playing with honor. That won’t matter with Super Bowl 50. It will matter with Super Bowl 100, though. If football’s still being played.

Sincerely,

Peter King

I typically do not like articles written to players, coaches, owners, etc.............but, King made a ton of very legitimate points in this article and he is correct w/his evaluations and assumptions.

I was watching NFL films last night and saw some things that disturbed me. Jeremy Hill, V. Burfict, and PacMan are very unstable individuals.

I did some research on Burfict and this guy is off the charts when it comes to be a dirty player. He seems to have the make-up of a sociopath. I think the league needs to get him into counseling.

Hill's antics were also disturbing. Very unstable. He may also need counseling.

PacMan doesn't seem to have those emotional deficiencies, but he certainly has the thug mentality.

I'll say that watching the NCAA National Championship game on Monday I noticed how professional the players were. In the biggest game in their young lives they played extremely clean football. No chippiness at all. It really stood out after the back drop of the Steelers Bengals game.

As much as people say they hate the rule when it is called but the targeting rule has really cleaned up NCAA football.

As much as people say they hate the rule when it is called but the targeting rule has really cleaned up NCAA football.

the only thing these players will understand is taking them off the field... not for 3 games next year, the second that it happens.

the only thing a 3 game suspension for Burfict means is that we will play the Bengals in week 4.... you heard it here first.
