Houck left the Chargers to join the staff in Miami if I remember correct and Hunter then took over. Houck built the OL and Hunter kept it going after Houck left and the injuries began to pile up. Again this is a decade ago so memory may be a bit rusty.

I have never really paid attention to coaches around the league, so I don't know most of the new hires. What jumps out at me is the experience. Aside from Hamilton and Tabor, these are all guys in their 50's and Saunders who is in his 60's, and all have been coaching for 20+ years. Now compare that to the coaching staff that just left.
I am less concerned what this guy did there, and that guy did somewhere else. What can they do working together?

The fact Hue coached the Raiders to an 8-8 season certainly isn't something I can easily dismiss. While it is a small sample size, it leads one to believe he can get the most out of limited talent. Am I sold on him as a HC? No, but I will keep an open mind about him.
I will look for what I always look for in a HC. Gradual improvement. Again, that doesn't always amount to W's and L's. I look for things like putting players in the position to use their strengths. Becoming increasingly better at clock management. Getting better at team discipline and less penalties as time goes on. Talent level has a lot to do with W's and L's. Sometimes HC's are limited in that respect. But one needs to see improvement in the things a HC actually does have control over.
Those are the exact same things I looked for in Pettine and simply did not see.
I can't say that I'm sold on this entire staff. What I can say is for the first time since Haslam bought this team, it seems like certain coaches were targeted, and with each step, they hired the coaches they had targeted. I must say I'm surprised and pleased by that.
I like Horton and like an attacking D. I felt that Chud/Farmer/Norv got the shaft. I believe that Chud had surrounded himself with the right assistant coaches and needed some time. A second year under that staff would have given me a much better idea on their chances for success.
So I'm going into this with an open mind as far as the coaching staff.
My biggest concern is with the way the FO and hierarchy will play out. I must agree with Vers that on the surface, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. I do have my doubts on that structure.
We'll see. One thing we can't do this time around. We can't say they didn't land the coaches they wanted. We can't say they settled for the fifth or sixth guy on the list.
Let's see how they perform and if Haslam is willing to have the patience to give them the time to build something.

I'm guessing you mean Horton.

Given the circumstances that have surrounded the Browns and the coaches that were actually available Haslam and the Browns have done as well as possible.
By comparison to other coaching staffs the Browns have had at least this one has experience and has been assembled correctly.
Of course it remains to be seen how they will do?
Hue is a respected guy within the football world and he has been able to get the guys he wants. Getting Al Saunders and Horton was important for Hue. They are guys he has experience with and guys he trusts.
Now the really big thing remains. Acquire talent. How they go about that and who they get will determine their fate and how the team performs.
I have to believe that Hue carried major leverage going into his interview process. The Browns made it clear that the HC would be the focal point of the team. And I believe that Hue made it clear that he would have major input on the roster.
So here we are. They will round out the coaching staff and make a decision on a GM/Player Personnel Guy.
Then comes free agency and the draft.
Thank goodness that Ray Farmer is no longer going to decide on the roster.
Once again the draft looms large. Once again quarterback is in the cross hairs.
Is there a Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck?
Not obviously. But that doesn't mean there is none.
Looking at the the top quarterbacks: Cook, Lynch, Wentz, and Goff yeah I think at least one of them will pan out maybe more.
Wentz in my book is a better prospect coming out of college than Bortles. I also think Goff is a better prospect than Tannehill coming out of college.
Lynch looks as good as Carr, and Cook looks better than Dalton.
So I like the odds. I am leaning toward Wentz and Goff.
The main thing is I trust Hue Jackson and Al Saunders to find the right guy.

Outside the process to hire Jackson, we really haven't heard much about Sashi and DePo. With the hirings of Tabor and Horton and the others, at least on the surface it appears that this is Hue's baby. I would think it odd if Sashi and DePo didn't micro-manage (as many fear they will) the coaching hires, then turn around and micro-manage the players/schemes/roster/etc. MAYBE analytics is providing numbers on all these guys that say they are a good fit for us and that is why we don't hear much about those two. Or, maybe those two readily understand there are certain aspects of the game that aren't quantified by numbers, such as ability to teach, develop, inspire... and so the lack of ego as they are described as, comes to the front while they go the back. On top of that, looking back at the process they put together when they hired Hue... there weren't any statistics on the list of qualities they wanted in a coach. I really don't see this team being run by a computer algorithm as people fear. My under qualified prediction is that as this moves forward, we'll hear so little of DePo's name we'll forget we have him, and we won't hear much from Sashi except around Draft Day and any FA signings. Here's to hopin!

That is how I remember it, too. Houck is one of the greatest OL coaches in the history of the league.
I will say that Hunter is well respected. Indy's OL was brutal. They gave up a ton of pressures and didn't block well for the running game, but in all fairness, they lacked talent. And the scheme didn't call for leaving a lot of TEs and RBs in to help them out.

IMO these coaches are all fine. What we need is talent like EO said. Get the talent and we will be fine. Hmmmmm........perhaps the same could be said for the coaches the Browns just fired and the "talent" that they did--or did not--have...... Definitely some truth to that. Hopefully this group gets a solid 4 years to get it going.

I'm not in the least but worried as to who we hear from or who does press conferences. In the presser, it was made clear that Sashi will listen to input from others, but he will have the final say on the roster.
I'm not sure how this will all play out one way or the other. Thus my concern.

Look I stayed on topic about what I thought about the coaching staff.
I don't need to be told to how I wish to respond.
If you disagree about my take fine. No problem at all.
When it comes to judging quarterbacks I trust my judgement more than I trust any single person on this board or for that matter any of the other so called experts.
That does not mean that I don't value others opinion.

Hue Jackson has what Pettine lacked (charisma, great rapport with players, seems a better motivator) but only time will tell if he can take care of business and pull the whole thing together.
I'm pretty ambivalent toward Hamilton. He's generally had stud QBs to work with when things have gone well, but there have also been mitigating circumstances when things have gone poorly (injuries, porous o-line).
I "like" the Horton hire, but primarily because it provides "delayed continuity" rather than a complete rebuild. I don't really see a better 3-4 coordinator out there for us to pick up. Hopefully some players have retained some of the info from his last stint.
Wilson and Saunders sound like good hires.
The new strength and conditioning staff will be possibly more important than all the rest. While all the videos of the new weight room, etc. looked nice, the results on the field were lacking. Hopefully we can find a great staff. I know Mick is a large part of Ohio State's success. Seeing before and after photos of Ohio State players is pretty insane. I'm curious to see how the new analytics approach ties into training programs. Hopefully we can get the players fine-tuned better this year.

I think we have a strong O staff but we have had some strong O staffs. The real issue has been defense and remains defense. I am almost convinced we would be better served to spend all our resources on offensive fire power like the colts did with manning and just let the defense fend for itself with little to no financial and draft support. I just hate the way we have continued to pour everything into a defense that cant get off the field.

I'm not sure how this will all play out one way or the other. Thus my concern. I'm thinking that so much of his job is keeping the others on the same page, aligned if you will, in their own lanes, in a effort to keep things from happening like Haslem picking Johnny or Butch picking Warren when all the team scouts loved Richard Seymour. That's how I see his role. Without control over the 53 he's just another voice in the scrum. With that control it forces the others to listen to him and consider what he is saying when he tells them everything's getting scrambled. It gives him the authority to force them back into their lanes, possibly to make good decisions. I know nothing. That's just a guess.

Hey, it's just a guess from all of us at this point.
And that's my concern. When you don't know I believe it requires some level of concern until you see how it plays out. At least that's my take on things. I simply don't have the confidence when it comes to the experience of Sahsi on the football side.
I'm certainly willing to keep an open mind however.

I guess we will see then, come e regular season, if Thomas is still here, and we see a dramatic drop off of performance from the O line, we know the issue lies within the OL coach.

Not necessarily. Right or wrong comes from the end results.
I have been wrong but I have also been right more than wrong.
I also take the time to really look at what is available from a research point of view. Which includes mostly studying game tape and looking for information about the prospects.
I don't know if others go through that process.

Is it just me or does Hue come across as quite full of himself in interviews?
I hope he is a great coach for us as I'm tired of the constant change but he kind of triggered red flags with me listening to him. And I also owe him an apology as I thought (acknowledged another poster's post) he seemed to only be looking at black coaching staff when the first 4-5 names came out. I'm happy with the coaches he has brought in with the exception of Horton. Didn't think much of Horton the first time around but he is more experienced now so who knows what he can do. Sure hope he coaches like Dick LeBeau!

Well, if you rate this year's qbs higher than the class that had Bortles, JM, Carr, Jimmy G, and Teddy.............I don't trust your evaluations at all.
You have been trying to stuff drafting a qb at two down our throats. We got it. You want a qb. You don't have to turn a coaching thread into another propaganda plea. We already know you love you some quarterbacks.

Here is the thing w/Hue, cfrs. If he wins right away, the fans and media will love him. They'll eat it up and say that type of "confidence" is exactly what we needed.
However, if the Browns don't win, it could get ugly and people will tire of his "cockiness" and "self-promotion" real quick. What makes it crazier is that Horton is back and we both know how he likes to talk and self-promote.
It should be interesting. LOL

If we would have won this past year everyone would have been saying, "Look how healthy our guys are, I'm glad Pettine took it easy on them in training camp." Instead, we get "Camp Cupcake."

Coaches are coaches. They suck if their players suck. The look good if their players are good. Then why are coaches fired and the same players retained ? Probably because it is easier to fire 1 coach then dunp 20 players.

Some might call it "uppity" Just ribbing you - because of the assistant coaches comment When you start buying in to Hugh - will you start calling him well spoken and classy ? :-) Back on subject - his enthusiasm may be heavy handed right now - but it has to be - and it's going to continue until they actually start camp because until then we have little to judge except for the confidence that he believes he can do the job.

If I were to sum up the biggest difference between this coaching staff and the previous coaching staff, in one word I would say "EXPERIENCE".
Pettine's coaching staff was very thin on NFL experience.
I do believe having experienced teachers (coaches) is an advantage when teaching your players. Hopefully, the added experience on the coaching staff will lead to better prepared players on the field.

Hue Jackson... I just don't get a good feeling about him, BUT like all Cleveland Coaches I am going to take a wait and see attitude and I still say he deserves 3 years to prove himself. Ray Horton....It's an upgrade, and gives me some hope for improvement. Hey at least I know Ray. O-Neil never seemed to friendly. Pep..... Holy Crap what in the hell is Hue thinking. He sucked every year with the Jets. 49ers, and Bears, and Luck made him look better than he really is. Hue's first big mistake IMO. Saunders.... Great move Hue. He brings not only years of experience but years of success. He is a proven winner. Kirby Wilson.... Proven RB coach, with a good solid history behind him. He has had success with several teams. This is another good move, BUT I am going to miss Wilbert Montgomery Hal Hunter...... My gut reaction was the same as my feelings for Pep. However after my own research and talking to some others who know a whole lot more about him that I do I have to say I am on board with his hiring. (But I still wish we would have hired Hank )
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.
