I get very confused with this board sometimes. For the life of me I don't understand the respect and love this guy gets.
If he is on our roster it just means our #3 QB has some experience. But that is all Austin Davis is. Not even a #2 QB. In the old days I'd keep him on board to hold the ball for the kicker...that would be it.
He is pretty bad - we got him off of the couch? He has had several starts and at that time got a lot of love from the media cause they are forever trying to see a Tom Brady now before he comes.
He is not Tom Brady. Only injury can have him as a starting QB. He is not a Bridge QB. I would take a 40 year old McCown over Davis.
I just don't get it how he can be thought of as a reasonable option or even a good #2.
What am I missing dawgs.
Oh and yes another QB thread - but one of a different nature. If there is not back and forth on the THREAD SUBJECT...then let it drop to the Elephant Grave yard of posts.
Please don't make this a QB draft thread, Manziel...I can assume some discussion on McCown would have to be made.
Thanks please educate me on the Austin Davis Love.

Honestly, once Connor Shaw is healthy, I doubt that Austin Davis will even be on the roster.
Who knows, perhaps both of them will be replaced with some UDFA this spring.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I watched Davis here while he played for St. Louis. Kid is pretty smart. Yes, he is very raw. He had nothing to work with playing for the Rams. Poor OL. No RB. Mediocre Receivers. Yet, he won games. Took the starting job from journeymen Shaun Hill.
My opinion he is similar to Alex Smith. Put talent around this kid and see what you get. He is a risk for the very reasons you state, but if you are going to take a project at #2 in this draft, why not continue building what is already in house?
Having Josh McCown and Austin Davis, in my opinion, eliminates the thought "I have to take a QB at #2." I can take a chance on Prescott or someone of that caliber.
Davis had a similar college career as Carson Wentz.
One other note, love seeing what Davis can do with a full off season and training camp with a team. He never got in St. Louis.

In 2 years DAvis and Shaw are more likely to be coaching somewhere than playing.

Davis, I believe, is signed for another 2 seasons. Why not keep him on the roster as your #3?

I'm confused by you thinking that anyone really thinks Austin Davis is any kind of answer to anything. I don't see much love for him. Some, sure, there is always love for the underdog guy.
But a groundswell of love? I don't see it

Davis, I believe, is signed for another 2 seasons. Why not keep him on the roster as your #3? It will come down to Shaw and Davis. Davis's cap number is $1.7M. Shaw's is $450K.

Compared to what? Are you talking Davis vs any of the QBs Browns possible take at #2?

I think it would be great if we landed Kirk Cousins or Ryan Fitzpatrick (if Colin Kap went to the Jets)

Davis never had the chance to play with par talent. He never gone through a complete training camp. Do I think Davis is talented enough to be the starter? No. Do I think he allows the Browns to pass on drafting a QB at #2? Yes. Much like McCown I think Davis can play well enough to win games maybe a winning season. I know one thing for sure. If the Browns do draft a QB, McCown, Davis, and Shaw, are the right mentors to have in the QB room.

I take Shaw over this guy. Not very good IMO. Not a project with much upside. Roster spackle.

That noodle Shaw has for an arm will never accomplish anything.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

That noodle Shaw has for an arm will never accomplish anything. I was just going to say this. Davis was not second coming of Otto Graham, but Shaw has a terrible arm. I mean epically bad...I think he's probably a good guy and I root for guys like that, but he just doesn't have even an NFL camp arm. Davis as least belongs on the field.

this But to add. The dude knuckles down and goes about his business and in some regard, Shaw did as well. I guess for that they earn respect as professionals despite their respective limitations. God knows not being a distraction and having some pride in representing the team well clearly is gonna carry some weight but nobody is anointing either as a second coming. Either as a 3QB I'm happy with.

Do I think Davis is talented enough to be the starter? No. Do I think he allows the Browns to pass on drafting a QB at #2? Yes. Sorry, but I don't understand the logic behind this statement. How can you, on one hand, not believe he is a legit starter (which I agree with) but then say his presence allows you to pass on trying to find one?
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Davis get cut. He never did it for me, but then again, it's difficult to evaluate a QB when he plays one game for us and didn't exactly have the benefit of a stellar defense or elite offensive talent.

I think Davis is fine as your third qb or perhaps even your second. He doesn't stink. He isn't good enough to be the guy. He's a guy.

Well in the many QB threads, every now and then I will see it noted that Austin Davis is a viable option as our #2 QB and some of those even suggest he can be a possible starter. See Bugs above. A poster I respect and yes, that does confuse me.
As for your judging of my existence on this board and the mutual hate I guess there is of me on this board.
I just should not post here anymore. After all there is DAMAN - to explain all on what is going on.
Later and thanks Clevestever you will have the the free ride to fool those who don't have a clue on why it is so smart for us to pick a WR #2 and #32 in this draft.

Having Davis does not force Cleveland to pay a high price on low probability. There is some pretty worthy talent Browns will pass on drafting a QB at #2.

I think Bosa at #2 is the better option and maybe WR at #32?, QB in the 3rd round if we dont pick one up in FA....I still think taking a stab at Cardale in the 5th might be a good gamble there as well

One thing that had to attract Hue to the Browns job is the #2 pick, and I would bet money that they told him that he would have significant input as to the player taken there .... and that it could/would be the QB of his choice.
Jackson is a QB developer ..... but I doubt that he wants to start with a guy as raw and questionable as Cardale Jones. I bet that he wants to refine and develop a QB, not build one from scratch.
Cardale Jones, to me, is a fantasy. He has all of the measurables, but he needs completely built from scratch.

Unfortunately, I don't think Cardale doesn't have the mental capacity to learn an NFL offense...
I could see him as a 3rd string Qb that takes 3-4 years to develop in a system that won't change. However, he just don't have the bran capacity to come in and start in the first two years.

Hello fellow Browns Dawgs... I haven't replied much on here for awhile an just thought I would throw a qb name out there an see what you guys think! Zack Mettenburger... Projected a 1st rnd talent before he got injured, has been in the league now 2 years with little wear an valuable experience with Tennessee... Big arm,big body I believe he's 6'4", some mobility, but will stay in the pocket under pressure. Could be a star in the making with the right coaching an a good offensive line to protect him... I loved him coming out in the draft an wanted us to take him in the 3rd or 4th rnd but we went with JM. Thoughts?
