Taken from King's MMQB piece but copied from Dawgtalkers.

Quote:
I think one little bit of free-agency buzz I heard here is the Broncos won’t be surprised if Browns coach Hue Jackson does more than just sniff around Brock Osweiler. Cleveland is in an interesting spot, picking second in the first round with a cadre of interesting but not lock college quarterbacks on the board. They’re surely not prepared to know what they’ll do a month from now in free-agency, but if Jackson is shaky on Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch and Carson Wentz, maybe Cleveland will look at a reasonably priced (or so you would think) prospect like Osweiler.

I would be suprised to see Denver let Osweiler get away. Given that Manning will likely retire where does that leave them at the QB position?

This,, I don't think that Elway will allow it. he'll pay what he has to pay go keep him.

Well, I doubt Denver will franchise tag him so, he'll be available to anyone in March if Denver can't lock him up ahead of time.

I don't know how I feel about BO, but it would create many options at #2-- like Bosa, Ramsey, Jack, Spence, Treadwell?

I think if the Broncos let Brock leave, that would tell me all I need to know about the guy. It's obvious the Broncos know a thing or two about talent, so if they don't make a serious attempt to keep him, why in the world would we want him? Brock didn't play awful, but he also didn't blow it up either. And how can you evaluate a QB that plays with the best defense in the league, and possibly one of the best in the past 30 years? Look at Peyton's numbers last night. You telling me that 15-20 other NFL QB's couldn't replicate that?

Brock is certainly an interesting topic, but I'm not so sure he's the answer. I like the possibility of looking anywhere and everywhere for our next QB, and not just hoping/depending on the draft to get our guy.

Well, I don't think it is as simple as the Broncos letting him leave. They may not have a choice. According to over the cap, Denver has $10MM in available cap space for 2016. That's without addressing Von Miller, probably heading for a franchise tag, or Danny Trevathan, Evan Mathis, CJ Anderson, Hillman, among others. Plus the rookie pool. Osweiler is probably higher on the list than many of those players considering he's the QB, but Denver still has decisions to make with little money. Cuts may happen as well.

If he's not franchised (which I can't imagine he would be), it may come down simply to Osweiler testing the market to see his value. Than any team has a shot at that point.

Well, our line is better than denvers.

I wonder thought if hue can do something about his mechanics? He's so tall that when he throws to the WRs, the ball is always getting there low.

Won't Manning retiring open up some space?

John Elway has shown far more aptitude in building the Broncos into a winner than any Browns GM.. he has shown the ability to put a team together with talent, that can play together... so....

If he's willing to let Osweiler go without a big fight, that would say something... something like we really don't want him. And if he does put up a fight, then we are likely to have to overpay him...

That's true. It would. I actually thought he as a FA in 2016, but he has one more year.

It makes no sense for him to retire before March 9th.

On March 9th his entire $19 mil salary becomes fully guaranteed for a $21.5 mil cap hit to the Broncos.

Also Manning just earned $4 mil in bonuses for making it to and winning the Superbowl and I don't think that was counted in the original $10 mil of free cap money.

Besides Brock, about half of their defense is in Free Agency as well.

If you tag Brock, then you are letting Von Miller walk for example.

The Broncos have some cap hell to figure out and they have about a month to do it.

Either way, my guess is that Payton doesn't play for the Broncos next season even if he decided not to retire.

The closer to the draft you will have the media bringing the GIVE IT TO MIKEY syndrome they reserve for the Browns.

Yeah like that is what the Browns want - a team with need for a QB...throw AWAY...yep that is our ticket.

Either he is good and they keep him...or they let him walk. But we are expected to want Mediocre here...yep that is our goal!

This is interesting because there are merits to the move.

I am not impressed w/this year's draft-eligible quarterbacks. I think odds are that most will be similar to Osweiler in regards to overall effectiveness.

The Browns have money to spend.

The Browns have a ton of needs.

The Browns could pay for Osweiler while filling more of the many needs they have.

I would much rather the Broncos spending money on Brock and letting Miller hit the market...........but, I don't think that is going to happen. LOL

It'll be interesting how Denver will handle it's players this season. I'm guessing Miller will get tagged, so they still have alot to workout. I think they, with Manning on the verge of retiring, will focus on keeping Brock.

I could definitely get on board with bringing Brock in here, even if it means overpaying. He's a better bet than any of the guys in the draft, and anyone else in FA. It also frees up our draft to get playmakers, and move around the draft to get them, with the possibility of getting additional picks next year.

This happens with a lot of Super Bowl caliber teams that carry a lot of stars. The cap constraints will catch up to a team quite quickly as contracts mature. I would expect Elway to tag Oswiler one way or another, but not with a franchise tag. That being said, it leaves Denver vulnerable to teams looking for a QB.

In our case, if we can find a starting QB outside of the draft, then it bodes well for opportunities to grab significant contributors during the draft process. It will also provide flexibility when it comes to draft strategy (moving down for extra picks) should we find value with a trade.

In December 2010, Elway expressed interest in working as the Broncos' top football executive, after having dinner with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.

However, he expressed no interest in being a head coach or general manager after Josh McDaniels' firing, saying, "I'm not interested in being a head coach. I'm not interested in being a general manager. I don't have that kind of experience to be able to pick those players day in and day out and such."

My guess is that one of Miller or Osweiler gets a long term deal, the one who doesn't gets tagged.

If you give Oswieler a Dalton/Kapernick kind of deal, where you (basically) overpay him, but have the flexibility year to year to reevaluate him.. I see nothing wrong with it..

Look at it this way, he's learned for years of what to do from Manning, with McCown in the room, he can learn what not to do.. and become really great.

Maybe the Browns are putting the interest out there so Denver spends their money on Brock, and some of their FA defenders slip through the cracks?

It is silly season, after all.

Can't seriously believe it will happen, especially if PM retires. Don't think cap will let them have it all again. That said, it makes sense if you can move onto Bosa and FA's.

Not looking for the draft to be a quick cure, but I am excited by where we are. This would open some extremely interesting possibilities. But do not trade down. Take your best shot when it is there.

Can they use the Transition on Brock, and the Franchise tag on Miller? I dont believe so.

So unless they can work out a deal with Von, they are going to have to tag him. You cant let him go.

That's my fault, I should've researched it:

so the question becomes... what will Denver's cap look like if Peyton retires?

are they on the hook with dead space?

http://www.ehow.com/info_8731298_effect-retirement-salary-cap.htmlSports Retirement Deadlines

When a professional athlete chooses to declare retirement can have a large factor on a team's salary cap heading into the next season. For example, a player filing for retirement in the NFL before June 1 allows a team to remove the player's salary cap figure from the books, effectively giving the team more cap space to sign draft picks and free agents. A team with a player retiring after this June 1 deadline may not remove any remaining salary for the player for the coming season and must count the player's expected salary toward the total cap.

By looking into and spending resources on an impossible option.

Brock Oswieler is currently scheduled to be a FA.

FAs are allowed to be signed by other teams.

We are another team.

What, at this time, is impossible about that?
