Joe Thomas: Browns' new regime won't trade me
Link
By Chris Wesseling
Around the NFL Writer

Had a potential Browns-Broncos trade not fallen through at the 11th hour early last November, perennial All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas would be celebrating his first Super Bowl victory.

After speaking with Sashi Brown, the Browns' new executive vice president of football operations, and head coach Hue Jackson recently, Thomas is confident, however, that he will remain in Cleveland.

Thomas said Thursday he's "all-in" with the Browns after Jackson assured him that the Browns' new regime has no designs on trading the nine-time Pro Bowl selection.

"I don't think they thought about trading me last year until Denver called," Thomas added, via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer.

Thomas echoed the analysis of Around The NFL's Conor Orr, who hailed the Browns' hiring of Jackson as a "huge coup."

"I'm super excited about Hue," Thomas added. "We're set for a nice run."

Thomas acknowledged that the Browns are likely to select a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The offensive line takes on even greater importance if Jackson is faced with the prospect of developing a young quarterback. Thomas is the keystone up front, with a pair of question marks in Mitchell Schwartz and Alex Mack.

Although Thomas raved about the duo as the best right tackle/center combination in the NFL, Schwartz is an impending free agent and Mack can opt out of his contract this offseason.

If Thomas' refreshed outlook is any indication, perhaps Jackson can sell both of them on a turnaround in Cleveland.

I'd consider getting his jersey, but that will certainly mark his end with the Browns. Stand up guy for sure. I'm glad he seems so bought into the team. Makes me relieved. Honestly, was probably going to stop being a Browns fan had him, Schwartz and Mack left. Wouldn't be a fan of anyone else, but I wouldn't be a fan of the Browns for awhile. Not until July, I swear. I digress. I'm glad we won't be trading him and our Analytics didn't factor age too strongly in their equation.

Nice to read that JT is staying and is all in with Hue.

Its time to step up to the plate and take responsibility. A top 10 OL must mean a top 10 offense, no excuses here.

Sick and tired of reading how good OL we have, how many probowlers and potential HOFers we have and see a team with no Running game a pathetic offense displays.

Same with the D, sick and tired of hearing how good D we have, how we are going to be an aggressive D, just to watch a D that can't stop the run and can't cover an average WR...

Well, he's actually signed so there isn't anything for him to put ink on. He's just gotta say, "I'm going to stay in Cleveland" and the deal is done.

I understand he is already signed, I was hoping that they would redo his deal and give him what he wants to not opt out and leave.

This news has to be somewhat of a relief for Thomas, since the Browns front office did talk trade with the Broncos just a few months ago.

Now the front office is faced with convincing Schwartz and Mack to stay with the Browns. With the front office saying they are not trading Joe and Joe saying he is "all in"...hopefully the positive vibe will continue.

I knew he was depressed as we started anew. I also knew once he got a look at the new program he would be on board.

A LT is so important on developing a new QB - they have too much to think about to also think about their blind side!

Hopefully he will be key on having MACK stay on board, as each day goes by we stand a better chance!

Will Schwartz also stay? Haven't heard anything about that front. Our we working with his agent as we speak for a new Contract.

JoeT confirmed more or less the obvious. We are getting a new QB @ #2. Pick of the Litter so to speak.

Thomas acknowledged that the Browns are likely to select a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Not in quotes so it might have been off the record or possibly a Nod for the Author to say what he did about "acknowledged".

Pretty much right in the link vambo supplied. Here's the quote from the article at the top of this page:

Quote:

Now, did he point blank STATE that the Browns were going to draft a qb? No. He acknowledged that it was likely.

I guess you all accept the word confirmation but ignore the words "MORE OR LESS"

Denver's glad the trade didn't happen either ... they won the Super Bowl without having to do it

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

If that's the case this staff better be ready to start him day one because McCown will most likely be in concussion protocol by the end of day 1.

This just tells me that Joe likes Cleveland, not just the Browns. I think he wholeheartedly would be more happy for the city than himself, if this team turned it around.

His mentioning Mack and Schwartz as the best G and C duo, seemed like a pitch to his buddies to stick around.

+1000 if we can re ink Mack Schwartz and Tashaun that is huge...sign a couple FAs (perhaps Marvin Jones WR Demario Davis ILB and Matt Forte RB) excel in the draft...we could make a push to be a middle of the pack team

Guys, we took the Super Bowl champs into overtime and scored more on them thank Carolina did.
I think Hue (from the little I saw of his presser) is the kind of coach that can get a player to like him and FOLLOW him.
I know every time a new 'move' is made we all ask for another glass of kool aid but whaddya gonna do? It's our team and I just think that given what Hue did down in Cincinnati that our future is gonna be brighter.

And I agree, Joe would be happier for the fans than for the team and that's why he's staying.

WE DON'T NEED A QB BEFORE WE GET A LINE THAT CAN PROTECT HIM

meh

I thought the line was outstanding and by far the best unit on the team. A top 10 OL does not necessarily mean a top 10 offense, not even close. The quarterback is and always will be a huge part of the offense, McCown performed admirably but he was injured a lot and his habit of holding onto the ball too long was not punished as much as it would have been behind some other lines. Oh and the group of receivers and backs on this team is the worst in the league IMO. The line can only do so much.

The Browns receivers caught a total of 371 catches in 2015, ranking them #12 in the NFL.

In receiving yards per game, Browns receivers averaged 259 yds per game, ranking them #16 in the NFL...and ranked #16 in total receiving yds with 4,156 receiving yds.

Clearly, the Browns receivers were not the worst in the NFL...just saying.

mac, those stats aren't the total story.

The Browns threw the ball a ton. The smallish WRs couldn't get it done in the red zone and were getting the crap beat out of them to the point they were either injured or ineffective late in the year.

The position clearly needs upgraded. And I can almost guarantee you that it will be upgraded now that Farmer is out and the analytic guys are in.

vers...not saying the Browns need not address the WR situation...just that they were not the worst in the NFL in 2015.

Presently, there are so many unknowns in the WR area.

Bowe..what happens to him..can he contribute?
Benji..will he be resigned?
Pryor..worth the effort?
Gordon..can he contribute?

Hue will need to factor in all the possibilities and decide if and where he might need to draft a WR.

Well that's my opinion, that the combined group of backs and receivers on this team is the least talented in the NFL. The absolute stats can be misleading because we threw a lot against soft coverages while behind multiple scores, the offensive line was great and quarterback play respectable for much of the season, etc.

Advanced stats peg the Browns offense as a whole to be in the bottom 5 or at least close depending on what you look at. How do you take an offense that has respectable quarterback play, great offensive line play, a great tight end, and manage to get into the bottom 5 in efficiency? Look at the personnel around the league-- the Browns don't stack up at the skill positions IMO.

edit: this is not factoring Josh Gordon into the discussion. He hasn't even been reinstated yet and it's hard to know how good he will be if he is, but obviously having him back at the level he played at a couple years ago changes things a lot.
